The Åland Armed Forces is the national military for the Åland State made to defend and expand the Åland States territory. The army was officialy founded on 2 January 2024. The leader of the military is Axel Himberg who is the Chief of Defence. The Åland States military is limited in budget and equipment. The Åland Armed Forces has 1 active soldier and 2 reserve.

Structure

The Åland Armed Forces has 2 branhces, the army and navy since the Åland State has no planes, helicopters or drones. The army has the 1st Börkö Brigade and the 2nd Börkö Brigade. The navy has the 1st Naval squadron.

Equipment

The army uses mainly small explosives and small firearms to defend its territory. The military has many weapons including chemical. The Åland Armed Forces has plans to equip the army with several armoured vehicles and tanks by the summer of 2024. Himberg has announced that construction of ships will begin around May to June. All of its equipment comes from the Åland Arms Manufactury. In February and March production of artillery or mortars are expected according to Himberg. The Army is also expected to have one or two drones by the end of 2024 or the end of 2025.

Budget

Himberg had also announced on 31 December that the Åland Armed Forces budget would be expanded from 10% of the gdp to 40% in the summer of 2024 and by the end of 2024 to reach 60% of the gdp.

Military awards

Also the highest award that you can get from the military is the Order of Åland First Class. The second highest is Order of Åland Second Class. There is also the Coin of Coup which is awarded if you fought against the French Republic in the coup against the French Republic.
