The Maryland civilization was a group of interrelated micronational states that was founded near the U.S. city of Baltimore in early 2001. The cultural umbrella of the civilization eventually extended well beyond Maryland, but each associated country was linked by the legacy of the Civalian and especially the Arian empires, which were both based in Maryland. The civilization was united, in theory, by the idea of liberal democracy, though the achievement of this ideal varied widely by country.
Following the dissolution of the Arian Republic in 2003 the civilization effectively became extinct.
