Rikstinget is the national unicameral legislature of the Imperial State of Econia and serves as the nations most powerful institution. It is elected yearly by the people of the nation using proportional representation within the principalities. 4 principalities elect 4 representatives each and the other 4 elect only 3 each. The Rikstings final member is appointed by the Imperial Sovereign and serves as the Speaker.
History
The Riksting was first proposed during the early stages of drafting the constitution, it was at first supposed to have been a bicameral legislature with a upper house, House of Peers, and a lower house, House of Representatives. These were to be closely modelled after the British House of Lords and Commons but it was decided that this would simply not be a sustainable idea long term, as the nations population probably would not be able to support to houses. Instead it was decided that a 29 member unicameral Riksting be formed, of which 28 members would be elected and 1 appointed to serve as Speaker by the Sovereign. The House of Peers idea was however not completely scrapped as the Peerage system it would consist of ended up remaining as part of the Econian Honours System.
The 1st Riksting was elected on November 5th 2023 during the 2023 Riksting Elections and resulted in neither the mainstream right or left being able to form a government. Therefore the Liberal Party got to decide which coalition would govern with them. They chose the right wing Conservative-Democratic Coalition. The 2023 Riksting Opening Ceremony, the first such ceremony, was held 3 days after the election.
