As Pontus is located on Micras, some information contained regarding the republic is fictional. This does not extend to other republics of the FRA1.

The Republic of Pontus is a republic of the Federated Republics of A1, located on the fictional world of Micras. The republic was established in November 2010 after the Federal Government of A1 submitted a claim to the Micronational Cartography Society for a section of land in the Eastern Hemisphere. It contains the capital of A1, Astolbia, as well as the main naval base for the Pontus Navy and various other territories around the world. It is the only republic of A1 permitted to raise its own military force and the only not having representation in the executive or legislature at a national level.

Etymology

'Pontus' comes from the Classical Greek 'πόντος', meaning 'sea'.

History

Pontus was established in November 2010, after a claim submitted by the A1 Government was accepted by the Administrative Council of the Micronational Cartography Society, which administrates and maintains the world of Micras. An original claim for a small island in the extreme south of the world, was advised against by some MCS members, as the island was completely surrounded by year-round ice and freezing temperatures.

Thus, the claim was changed to its present location, and there are plans to expand further as more and more active citizens make their way onto the A1 Forum, which is used by the MCS to monitor a nation's activity.

Government and Politics

The National Government of A1 is the highest authority, Pontus being a republic. However, it does have its own (fictional) republic government, headed by Premier John Rudd, and politics (also fictional).

Premier Rudd is a member of the Pontus Party for Change (PPC), which was elected in the December 2008 elections, beating the Pontus Progressive Party (PPP) by a considerable margin. They received 56% and 39% of the vote respectively, with minor parties and independents picking up the rest of the seats.

The legislature of the republic is the Federal Chamber of Electorates, maintaining its own unicameral legislature for republic matters, but which can overruled by the National Legislature. It is the House of Representatives (Pontus), with 150 seats, each seat representing 70,000 people. The House is led by a Speaker who acts as the moderator in the house.

Military

Main article: Pontus Defence Force
Pontus is the only republic permitted to raise its own military, even though it is fictional and under the command of the A1 Defence Force. It consists of the Pontus Navy, Pontus Air Force and Pontus Army, with each branch headed by John Hogg, James Wilary and Mars McTavish respectively. The navy's main base is in the city of Thalassapolis, the second-largest city in Pontus.

Geography

The terrain of Pontus is mainly relatively flat, although there is a high mountain, Mount Esperance, which rises in the centre of the republic. The capital of Pontus, Astolbia, is located on its south-western slopes.

The two largest cities in the republic are Astolbia, with around a population of around 3.5 million people, and Thalassapolis on the coast, with around 2 million people.

Pontus is currently divided into seven subdivisions, the main divisions called 'States': Astolbia, Lydia, Meratium, Cobar, Tunesien and New Pontus, and the one 'territory': Kepulauan. Each state has a regional capital city.

Infrastructure

Astolbia International Airport, London Intercontinental Airport, Solinvicta Intercontinental Airport and Thalassapolis International Airport are the three principal airports in Pontus, although there are many other smaller regional airports and airstrips, as well as separate air force bases for the Pontus Air Force. These airports are served by the many airlines that operate in Pontus.
