The Monarchy of Ombria, also known as the Ombrian Monarchy, is the position of a hereditary sovereign reigning as the head of state and head of government of the Kingdom of Ombria. The monarch holds absolute power. The monarch is the head of the Ombrian royal family and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. In addition to this, the monarch is the supreme governor of the Church of Ombria. The monarch also holds the title of "Defender of the Faith".

The current monarch is King Colin I, who took the throne upon its formation on 28 March 2024.

History

The monarchy is the oldest office and institution in Ombria. It was established on the state's foundation on 28 March 2024. The monarchy was then confirmed by the basic laws on 29 March 2024.

Functions

The monarch is both head of state and head of government, and holds absolute power. This is based on divine right theory. In their capacity as absolute ruler, the functions of the monarch include and are not limited to:

  • Chief Legislator
  • Chief Executive
  • Chief Judge
  • Head of the Royal Family
  • Confirming the Heir Apparent
  • Head of the Council of Ministers
  • Head of the Privy Council
  • Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces
  • Supreme Governor of the Church of Ombria
  • Granting Titles and Honours
  • Making Treaties of Alliance and Commerce
  • Declaring War and Making Peace
  • Declaring States of Siege and Emergency

Succession

The Basic Laws of Ombria define the monarchy as hereditary. Article 13 of the basic laws states that the throne is to pass to the "rightful and legal" descendants of King Colin I. Article 14 also defines how the full succession process is to be defined by law. No other law has yet been passed concerning succession to the throne.

The basic laws also stipulate that the monarch should confirm the heir apparent as the heir apparent and can devolve duties upon them by royal decree. The monarch can also relive the heir apparent from their duties.

The heir apparent currently is de facto titled the crown prince.
