History

The Kingdom of Grant Island was founded on 15 February 2004 as a new country project by Terrence Davies, the first King of Grant Island and then in 2005, the Kingdom of Grant Island formed the Commonwealth of Marie Byrd Land.

The Great Council of The Commonwealth of Marie Byrd Land

Geography and climate

Grant Island Grant Island is an ice-covered island, 20 miles long and 10 miles wide, lying 5 miles east of the smaller Shepard Island off the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Grant Island is located at 74°28′S131°35′W / 74.467°S 131.583°W. Like Shepard Island, Grant Island is surrounded by the Getz Ice Shelf on all but the north side. Grant Island was discovered and charted by personnel on the USS Glacier on February 4, 1962. Grant Island was named by the United States Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names(US-ACAN) for Commander E. G. Grant, Commanding Officer of the USS Glacier at the time of discovery.

Shepard Island Shepard Island or John Shepard Island is an island about 11 miles long, lying 6 miles west of Grant Island off the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Shepard Island is located at 74°25′S 132°30′W / 74.417°S 132.5°W. Shepard Island is ice capped except at its northern, seaward side, and is almost wholly embedded in the Getz Ice Shelf. Shepard Island was discovered by the United States Antarctic Service(USAS) Expedition (1939-1941) and named for John Shepard, Jr., a contributor to the expedition.

Forrester Island Forrester Island is an ice-capped island 6 kilometres (3.5 nmi) long that lies 24 kilometres (13 nmi) north-northeast of Shepard Island, off the Getz Ice Shelf of Marie Byrd Land, Antarctica. The island was discovered and charted from the USS Glacier on February 5, 1962, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Lieutenant Commander John J. Forrester, U.S. Navy, Executive Officer aboard the Glacier at the time of discovery.

Backer Islands The Backer Islands are a chain of small islands at the south side of Cranton Bay. The islands trend northwest for 22 kilometres (12 nmi) from the ice shelf which forms the southern limit of the bay. They were mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1960–66, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Walter K. Backer, a U.S. Navy chief construction mechanic at Byrd Station, 1967

Suchland Islands Suchland Islands is a group of about 8 small islands lying just inside the central part of the mouth of Cranton Bay. Mapped by United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1960-66.

Clark islands An island 2 mi long in eastern Amundsen Sea. It is the largest island of a small group lying 38 mi WSW of Canisteo Peninsula. Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy (USN) air photos, 1960-66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for F. Jerry Clark who participated in U.S. Antarctic Research Program (USARP) glaciological-geophysical work at Roosevelt Island, 1961–62, and on traverses from Byrd Station, 1963-64.
