The office is currently vacant.
History
The earl marshal was a post established on 19 November 2023, with the foundation of the other great officers of state.
Responsibilities
The role of the earl marshal is mostly ceremonial. The officeholder helps in the organisation and planning of state occasions such as the monarch's coronation, royal weddings, state funerals and the state opening of parliament.
The earl marshal is also the leading officer of arms. As a result of this, they oversee the College of Arms and are ex officio the sole judge of the High Court of Chivalry.
Appointment
The earl marshal is appointed at the discretion of the monarch, and they serve at the monarch's pleasure. As the office is largely a ceremonial office, the monarch is not conventionally required to accept nominations for the position from the prime minister.
