The Republic of Astrania, more commonly known as Astrania, is a Republic in New Mexico. Founded on 17 December 2021, the nation claims sovreignty over three houses and one uninhabited territory, with the area totaling to around 0.005 sq. km, or 0.002 sq. mi. It has a population of 40, with most of its citizens being humans. However, a few cats are citizens as well.

Etymology

Astrania's name comes from the old word Astrana, roughly translating to 'star country.' The 'Astra' part comes from the word Astronomical, and the Nia/Na is a variation of Ia, meaning land. The names of the different provinces come from English, except for the province of El Perro, which comes from Spanish.

History

Astrania was founded on 17 December 2021. When the nation was founded, It was known as Astrana, but the name was changed over the summer in 2022. Astrania set out to prove itself as a Micronation capable of staying sovereign for an extended period of time. It gained citizens, as well as began to develop diplomatic ties with other New Mexican micronations. After gaining several territories over the span of a few months at the beginning of 2022, territorial expansion began to slow and the government now turned their sights on developing the nation. The country still largely relied on the United States for things such as food, so the government decided a garden would be built. Radishes would be the star vegetable of the garden. Unfortunately, during the planting, the president put too many seeds in the ground, causing the radishes to compete for space and nutrients, making them small. This first attempt proved to be partly disastrous. Luckily, a crop of radishes survived in a nearby pot and some lettuce was grown as well.

A New Age

Not much happened over the summer of 2021. The nation was nearly forgotten about, but luckily, when the next school year arrived, the nation was active once again. Trying to claim the new school as territory of Astrania, the president and one follower explored the region, trying to find new land. Unfortunately, the territory was lost within a month. By September, Astrania had only 8 to 10 citizens. To increase the population, The President asked different classmates and friends to join. By late October, the nation had garnered the citizenship of 20 people, and by December, nearly 30 people were Astranian citizens. Around this time, Astrania established diplomatic relations with other micronations for the first time. It is reported that president talks to all of the citizens to ensure they do not forget their citizenship.

Marshmallow Independence

By late November, Astrania was facing internal turmoil. The governor of one of the provinces, New Marshmallow, was less popular than the rest of the government. The Astranian Communist Party, the ruling party of New Marshmallow, had different views with the main Astranian Centrist Party. This caused an event known as the Revival of Marshmallow. On November 27, 2022, New Marshmallow was expelled from the nation of Astrania, forming the Provisional Government of Marshmallow. By December, after a civil war in the newfound country, the provisional government was abolished in favor of the People's Republic of Marshmallow.

Politics and government

Astrania is a parliamentary republic, with a parliament made of 3 members. The vice president is also the head of parliament. Currently, Astrania's leading political party is the Astranian Central Party, which aims to incorporate all sides of the political spectrum into one unitary governing body. Elections happen every year, and there is no limit to the number of times a candidate can run. The current president., GlowCactus,only has half of the power in the Astranian government. As of March 13, all communist/socialist parties have been banned, in accordance with Astrania's anti-communist views.

Previous Governments

Before the establishment of the parliament, Astrania was run with complete control by the president. This was to ensure everything, or most everything, would be in order before the parliament was created. Lasting from the country's founding in December 2021 to September 2022, this system was almost completely abolished by Astrania's first independence day.

President

Astrania's president goes by the name GlowCactus, his real name not revealed for privacy purposes. This important leader suggests most laws, but needs the approval of the parliament to do most any lawmaking. At the country's founding, His Excellency was the Vice President. When the first leader resigned in May, His Excellency took to the helm and became the second president of Astrania.

Law and order

Astrania has a law and order system based off of a more strict version of the American justice system. The nation typically reprimands people for misdemeanors, but not many real crimes actually happen in Astrania- so no stricter punishments have been used. However, if somebody says something inappropriate/offensive, they can be banned temporarily. (typically for one day or so) Astrania seeks to be somewhat lenient with its punishments, especially if the person committing the crime was forced to. They will still be punished, but the person who was behind the crime will be punished more severely. Perhaps the most severe crimes are directly insulting somebody / being a communist. Both will result in a temporary ban. However, they can be banned permanently if the parliament decides so.

Foreign relations

Astrania first established diplomatic ties with the Republic of Hagustein, a nearby micronation, in late December of 2021. This nation was Astrania's first ally and later became part of Astrania in January of 2022. Astrania sought to gain diplomatic relations with other micronations, but did not gain lasting ties to other micronations until October 16, 2022, When the nation of Astrania allied with a fellow Micronation, the Federal Republic of Flooreja. This nation has maintained healthy diplomatic relations with Astrania for months. Other major allies to Astrania include the Great Chuzia Empire, the Marcocian Democracy, the Jichen Empire, The Democratic Malloranist Republic of Kaydenestan, The Kingdom of Terrestia, the Republic of Marshmallow, the Republic of Ganzia, and the Empire of Bonisuela. Flooreja, Chuzia, Marcocia, Jichen, Kaydenestan, and Terrestia can all be found on the coding platform Scratch, where Astrania and many allies discuss micronation-related topics.

Military

Astrania's Military is powerful for a micronation. It has a $50 yearly military budget and it is mainly devoted to buying Nerf Guns. However, the arsenal may be expanded to include water balloons. The Military has permanent bases in the provinces of Banana and Sunburst, and sometimes performs military drills to demonstrate the power of the armed forces. Astrania's military is often doing other things, because all of the other micronations surrounding Astrania are at peace with it, with the exception of Marshmallow. Currently, the rival nation has no armed forces, but in the event that Marshmallow forms an official army, Astrania's soldiers must be ready to go into battle at any time.

Geography and climate

Astrania, being a desert nation, typically is a very warm country. However, since it is a high desert, the winters can be very cold. The ground is mostly flat and rocky. This is due to the fact that Astrania's land claims are all individual houses, and using small pebbles to cover a yard is a popular decoration system in Rio Rancho, where Astrania is located. Because Astrania is a very small nation, there is not much, if any, change in the climate of its regions. The elevation is mostly the same as well. Over all of Astrania's non-contiguous provinces, only a 15-meter change in elevation was recorded.

Economy

Being a very small nation, Astrania has no real industries. All citizens go to school/work in the United States, because there are no schools or shops in Astrania. This may change soon, as the government has wanted more industries for quite some time. The nation's currency is the American Dollar. In March 2023, it was decided that Astrania would adopt the American Dollar for its high value and stability, replacing the old currency, the Astranian Ticket. The nation is currently dedicated to building gardens, in order to save money on food and promote Astranian teamwork.

Culture and media

Astranians are very festive. The country has many holidays around the year, especially in the months that have no major holidays. The national animal is the Mountain Lion, despite the fact that there are no mountain lions in Astrania. The national vegetable is the Radish. The national Color, unusual for many nations, is Orange. This is shown on the flag, which uses lots of orange. Despite being a democratic country, Astrania's media is state-run. In contrast with most state-run media, Astranian media can have anybody reporting or saying things about the government. This typically does not happen, due to the low tensions in the country.
