Molta were recognised as the independent state in 1988 after the first president, Kim Jaehyung speech to the United Nations. Molta maintains diplomatic relations with 163 UN member states and other recognised Molta as autonomous Islands of United Kingdom.

It is also a member of the United Nations and ASEAN (member observer (UN), non-member observer (ASEAN)), Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the Commonwealth of Nations.

Molta has a number of diplomatic missions abroad and has close relations with United Kingdom, Singapore, sharing an interchangeable currency regime as well as close military relations with the latter island city-state. Aside from relations with other ASEAN states, of which the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, and Malaysia are key partners, Molta also has extensive relations with the Muslim world and the Arab world outside its own region.
