The Chief of the General Staff (CGS) is the professional head of the Tanaauan Army. The CGS is a member of the Chiefs of Staff Committee and the Army Board. The post is immediately subordinate to the Chief of the Defence Staff, the post held by the head of the Armed Forces of Tanaau.

The office is currently vacant.

History

The office of CGS was established on 17 November 2023, as part of the establishment of the army. It is the oldest office in the army.

Responsibilities

The Chief of the General Staff (CGS) is the professional head of the Tanaauan Army. The officeholder is for the maintenance of the fighting effectiveness, efficiency and morale of the army. The CGS reports to the Chief of the Defence Staff, and as a branch chief of staff the officeholder has direct access to the defence secretary and prime minister.

The CGS also sits as an ex officio member of the Army Board and Chiefs of Staff Committee.

The remit of the CGS includes:

  • Maintains Effectivity of the Army
  • Ensuring Efficient Governing of the Service
  • Advising Officials on Army Matters
  • Develop the Future of the Army
  • Leads the Senior Management of the Army

Appointment

The CGS is appointed by the monarch. Candidates are nominated by the prime minister with the assent of the secretary of state for defence. The CGS serves at the monarch's pleasure.
