The Zonian Confederacy was a micronation located in Cape Town, South Africa. The nation claimed areas around their citizens homes as well as a few territories that citizens frequently used. The nation was founded by Nicholas Woode-Smith on the 20 November 2009. It was dissolved on the 21 March 2012, when it joined Sirocco as the Dominion of Zona.

Land

The Confederacy was divided into cities and territories that would answer to their elected leader. The parliament had little local power but had attempted a takeover if they felt it is warranted. Provinces were divided into fiefs which were controlled by clans.

The Confederacy had a policy of Confederate States where a nation could enter as a semi-independent state of the Confederacy. A nation could enter into and pull out of a Confederate State agreement at any time. The treaty terms could be requested from a Zonian official. The following are a list of former Confederate States:

Military

Due to political and cultural influence, the Zonian Union Military was a very important part of Zonian Life. The Zonian Union Military provided many jobs to citizens. A military academy allowed recruits to train in theory or practical and awards degrees in military subjects. The right to be in possesion of arms was an important factor of the Constitution, so most if not all citizens could own either a melee weapon or Airsoft firearm.

Military leanings had been subsided after the ZPP disbanded. An organised virtual military called the Death-Corp, fought on Black-Ops multiplayer. After the ZPP re-emerged, military leanings rose, but not as much as they once were.

Politics

The Zonian Confederacy was run by a Parliament of 6 seats. Two of which were taken by the President and Vice-President. Parliamentary elections were run every year. The Parliament would elect a President. The Vice-President was chosen by the President. The Parliament acted as a national leader and representive as provinces were run by Magistrates and areas were run by clans.

Cities were run by Magistrates or a major clan who controls all the territory within. Due to size, cities were used mostly just for citizen registration purposes. Cities were normally divided into either fiefs for clans or areas for other purposes.

The Assembly was a body of non-parliament members who met to suggest motion to either the Departments or Parliament. They also had the power to call an early election if they give a good reason to do so.

Departments

The Department Heads were allocated by the Head of Departments who was elected by the Parliament. It was the Head of Deparments job to manage the Department heads and relay any orders or requests from the Parliament to the Departments and Vica-versa.

The Departments managed the different facets of the Zonian Confederacy. These being:

  • Finance - The Micronational Currency and Budget
  • Development - Graphics, Media, Culture
  • Defense - Military and Law Enforcement
  • Citizenship - Recruitment, ID Cards, Publicity
  • Nobility - Clans and fiefs

Clan System

Clans were a group or faction that owns a fief. A leader of a clan was called a Daimyo. To make a clan official, it needed to own atleast one fief. A clans rank depended on the number of fiefs under their control. A fief could be gained through real estate purchase, legal takeovers or military annexation. Clans were the local governors of the confederacy.

Foreign Affairs

The Confederacy had a habit of keeping informal friendships with nations. Lists get tiresome to maintain and a representitive would know if a nation was a friend or foe. President Nicholas Woode-Smith condemned most micronational organizations as 'useless' and 'unneeded'.

Economy

The Zonian Confederacy was a capitalist nation and used a free market economy. Citizens were free to start their own companies but could register them with the Department of Finance to gain benifits. The Department of Finance had developed a currency that was used to a degree, the Zonite. An online bank using PHPBank had been formed and was used by citizens to pay for services or products.

The Department of Finance managed job listings to try raise activity and pay citizens for jobs. Bankers kept record of bank loans and transactions and the Head of Finance sets budgets for the departments.

The Zonian economy was centered around media but after the resignation of Robin Visser, started to move towards real estate and war related material. Due to the clan system, real estate was a major asset in the Confederacy and weaponry was necessary to maintain that territory.

Media

The Confederacy ran a TV Station called the Zonian Broadcasting Network. Ex-Vice-President Robin Visser was the creator of many of the Zonian animations, as well as the Zonian promotional images that you may see. Robin Visser was famous in Zona for creating many ZBN version of popular film intros. ZBN continues to exist today in the Dominion of Zona, but is considered by Daniel Anderson as part of the Siroccan Broadcasting Corporation and is now also known as SBC West or SBC ZBN.

Culture

Zona has went through many cultures since its establishment in 2009. After the start of the 3rd Democratic era, the Confederacy didn't have any culture which could resemble macronational cultures until a sudden change of interests changed the confederacy into a semi-Sengoku Jidai based nation.

Zonians were diverse in lifestyle and interests. Video Games seemed to be the only hobby which most Zonians share. Other facets had grown in the Confederacy shaping a unique culture for them. The Department of Development was responsible for the establishment of culture in the Confederacy. The leader of the Department produced many videos and images to promote the Confederacy.

Gambling had become somewhat popular in the Confederacy and had birthed a little Mafia and Wild West culture. Fedoras were a popular fashion item and Western terms were used for many objects. Poker was widely popular and an annual Poker Tournament was run by the Aegis Corporation. A sport known as Pa-Shi was played often in the Houses of Parliament as well as Blood Bowl which was played around Eroch. Due to anime influence, Japanese culture (specifically Sengoku Jidai culture) had become prevalent in Zona.

Many saw Zona as militarist but only the Zonian Patriots Party were however. Many citizens did own guns but kept them for leisure or security purposes. Nationalism was very prevalent in the Confederacy due to political influences and Civil Protection prescense.
