Zarel Smith, Duke of Hsed[a] (Zarel Wilhelmus Jacobus Smith;[b][1] Zedy Smith;[c][2]; Zed Zarel;[d] born 18 November 2004)[1], more commonly known mononymously as Zed and formerly known formally as Prince Zarel I and Prince Zed I,[e][4][5] was the Prince of the Principality of New Eiffel[6][7] from 11 August 2018–20 June 2020. Smith also holds the highest amount of edits made on English-language MicroWiki, over 30,000,[8] editing under the account Z. Luna Skye.[9] He is also an administrator on the site. Smith is also an intermicronational politician holding numerous respected offices and positions in various micronations and intermicronational organisations, and is also media entertainer prominent in the MicroWiki Sector; experimentalist, actor, filmmaker and film critic, Smith has created, directed and stared in over thirty short films.[10] Smith is also a statistician, musical artist, writer and content creator among other ventures.

Smith was born in Surrey as the second child of Louis and Daleen Smith. Smith grew up in a very well off family, and grew up in London, living with both his parents and siblings.[11] Smith is raised homeschooled, however took drama and theatre acting classes in a school in Kingston upon Thames from early 2014 to late 2015.[12] Smith got interested in micronationalism after hearing about the Republic of Molossia via its website in 2017, and founded the Republic of New Finland on 31 December 2017; after becoming a kingdom in June 2018, it was reformed on August 2018 into a parliamentary principality, with Smith as its head of state. Since April 2018, Smith has been attending film and theatre acting classes at Esher Church of England High School in Surrey.[13] Smith joined MicroWiki in September 2018. Smith abdicated in June 2020 in favour of his brother jOOST, due to his inability to put enough time and effort into his position, and by the time of his abdication Smith had risen to be a prominent and praised micronational leader, especially within the "New Guard". jOOST granted Smith the substantive title of "Duke of Hsed" after his abdication.

Since joining MicroWiki on 27 September 2018, Smith has become a wiki[14] and MicroWiki@Discord administrator on 2 February and 1 May 2020 respectively. Smith edits MicroWiki under the username "Z. Luna Skye", and with over 30,000 edits and more than 3,500 page creations, Smith holds the record for the highest amount of edits made on the English-language MicroWiki.[15] Smith claims to have allegedly spent somewhere near 1,000 hours on MicroWiki.[16] Smith is also an administrator on MicroWikiDictionary and has been since 7 April 2019;[17] he also founded the unaffiliated MicroWikiQuotes on 23 January 2020.[18]

Smith is a well-known micronationalist in the MicroWiki sector. After a number of minor controversies and feuds between late September 2018 and early January 2019, Smith gradually began improving his image and foreign relations with New Eiffel and the wider MicroWiki Sector, however his first two months on the MicroWiki@Discord server were of some ridicule from members who had heard about his previous controversies. Smith established the now well-known Micronationalist of the Month award in late January 2019,[4] and was made a MicroWiki patroller in late February due to his positive contributions on MicroWiki.[19] During March, Smith expanded New Eiffel's relations by signing treaties with Mahuset,[20] and the now former nations Goldenstein[21] and Vryland, as well as ratifying a treaty signed in February with Ünie. Smith did various surveys and statistical projects throughout April, and co-founded Microcode et al.[22] The MicroWiki meme @New Eiffel Government also formed. Smith's innovative ideas, outreach efforts, professionalism and likeable personality is often contributed to Smith's fast growth among the "New Guard" between April to July of that year; the 2019 incarnation of the Organisation of Active Micronations which Smith founded also attracted many newer and smaller nations, making them aware of Smith as well as New Eiffel - Former OAM members which are now prominent on MicroWiki include Aenopia, Ponderosa Hills (see TOES Sector) and Lytera. This was due to the unexclusive joining criteria.[23] Smith conducted various surveys and participated in a number of social, sporting and other events between August to December, as well as beginning to partake in elections and fill micronational positions, most notably running for Populares in Abelden, for which he won the closest electoral victory in a by-election running for Populares, winning the by-election to a newly created seat of the Reichsversammlung by two votes, having received 18 votes, against his opponent, Chase Nanatovich of Social Ecology, who received 16 votes.[24] The start of 2020 saw a positive start, with Smith receiving two New Year Honours, in Iustus[25] and Millania,[26] and expanding his political career, partaking in elections; becoming a Lord in Essexia,[27] winning local elections in Posaf, becoming Minister of Orthography for Morgannwg in Abelden[28] and earning various offices in the Grand Unified Micronational.[29]

Smith joined the Micropolitan Club and Lounge on 18 August 2019, and is also a member of Drunkiz Gadurō, Microfurs and a co-founder of TOES.[30]

Early life and education

New Eiffel School, where Smith was educated

Smith was born on 18 November 2004 in Epsom General Hospital, Surrey to Louis and Daleen Smith. He is named after his Grandfather on his mother's side. The second of three children, Smith is of South African descent, and grew up in a very well off family living in London, where he and his family had moved when Smith was only a few months old.[12]

Smith was raised Protestant, specifically attending multiple Church of England Churches, and although Smith does not call himself Anglican, he holds no disrespect towards them and is openly and proudly a member of the Church of England. Smith is also a member of the Church of New Eiffel, a self-proclaimed nondenominational Church, however it heavily leans towards Anglican values.[31]

Smith is homeschooled, however in 2013 he began showing interest in drama and theatre acting, and thus began to attend drama classes in a school in Kingston. Sometime in 2014, Zarel also began to take an art class from the same school. The teacher noted his artistic skills, and while there he completed the Bronze Arts Award, a British level 1 qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework,[32] and was one of the best of his class, before leaving the school in late 2015. Smith is presently a semi-retired artist. In early 2018, Zarel began attending New Eiffel School after its construction, and in April of the same year, he began filmmaking and theatre acting classes at Esher Church of England High School.[13]

Reign

New Finland (2017–Aug 2018)

Smith became interested in micronationalism after hearing about the Republic of Molossia via its website. Smith later learned more about micronationalism via Wikipedia, and founded the Republic of New Finland on 31 December 2017,[33] on New Year's Eve minutes before New Year's Day; laying claim to land in South Africa. Smith created its flag, coat of arms and currency after some research on the subjects. On 4 January 2018 a new claim was made in the United Kingdom, and later the original claim in South Africa was dropped entirely. During this time, New Finland was heavily plagued with inactivity, and so Smith, who was President Zarel Smith at the time, decided they needed to give New Finland a boost if it was ever going to became a major micronation. He was backed up by many of his citizens at the time. Smith put heavy work into New Finland, creating a new flag and coat of arms alongside various other national symbols, and reformed the law as well as the government and supreme court.[34]

In March 2018[citation needed], the Supreme General jOOST Smith announced in a video that he had declared war on New Finland and would try to gain control over it. The Supreme General, proceeded to attack Smith around five minutes after he declared war, attacking him in his office. Smith quickly grabbed a wooden sword and defended himself by hitting the Supreme General in the leg. After long talks, Smith made a deal with the Minister of War that if New Finland became a kingdom, the Minister of War would have to keep peace. He accepted and New Finland became a kingdom, and the president was chosen as king.[33] Despite the idea that he would have less power than before, this transaction gave him legal power over the courts. This was a controversial time in New Eiffel's history as Smith disobeyed various laws and used loopholes and false accusations to steal resident's property. Following this massive scandal, Smith willingly stepped down after heavy backlash from the population and the media. New Finland was not officially defunct, however, all the government positions were vacant, and the Kingdom was left in anarchy.[34]

Accession to New Eiffel

Smith was proclaimed the first Prince on 11 August, proclaiming himself. Smith had been planning a new flag and national symbols since 9 August, making them from a list he made of things to accomplish. Smith was re-inspired after watching the five-part BBC miniseries How to Start Your Own Country presented by Danny Wallace. Smith further continued to do research from various sources, vowing to not make the same mistake twice. Smith than re-established New Eiffel on 11 August in the form of a principality, believing it to be able to work well with a limited government.[33]

First year

Smith established the Royal Archives and created His Royal Mail Service of New Eiffel in December. On 21 January 2019, Smith wrote the New Eiffelic national anthem Stand tall, New Eiffel, which replaced the previous anthem Friendly, New Eiffel. Smith wrote the first constitution which was adopted on 1 March. Smith created the Order of the Beaver on 25 March, Order of the Lion on 25 May and the Most Excellent Order of the Amphisbaena Potato on 15 June. Smith conducted New Eiffel's first and so far only census on 6 July.[35]

Late 2019–2020

Smith's abdication letter, signed

On 3 September, by order of Smith, acts of the New Eiffelic parliament started being officially recorded. Smith wrote the Voting Reform Act which was passed on 9 October, reforming the requirements in order to vote in the general election.[36] After facing criticism by various Libertarians, Smith made an agreement with jOOST Smith and he wrote and proposed the Prince Powers Act, limiting and better defining the Monarch's powers.[37] Smith accidentally lost the digital and only record of New Eiffel's constitution on 14 December, starting the 2019–2020 New Eiffelic Constitution Crisis. On 14 February 2020, Smith made a royal decree decreeing all New Eiffelic island territorial claims to be dropped, disestablishing the Island of A Férfiak, the Island of New Knight and the Island of Zackro.[38] During the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith declared the first ever state of caution due to the continuing spread of coronavirus in the surrounding areas. Smith stated on 15 March that sporting events and outside travel would not be restricted for the time being, however later on 24 March Smith restricted all outside travel. Travel bans were lifted on 27 April with a set curfew. Due to the close proximity of all New Eiffelic residents, no social distancing was never imposed. Furthermore, hand-washing was also highly recommended. Smith received mixed reception from internal as well as external critics on his response to the pandemic.

Abdication

On 16 June, Smith announced his wish to abdicate. Smith signed his abdication letter on 18 June, which was to be made official on jOOST's coronation. A crown was also created for the coronation, which had to be rushed due to Smith's short notice. At jOOST's coronation, the entire royal family was present — Smith took the crown and put it on top of jOOST's head, declaring him His Majesty jOOST (or Joost) the First, Second Prince of New Eiffel. Smith gave a speech following his abdication:

It has been an honour to be the Prince of this nation, for nearly two years. We together have held strong through the good times, as well as the tough times. I definitely have no regrets, and I will never stop loving or even being involved with New Eiffel. I wish the new Prince the best of luck, and he has my full support and confidence he will serve and lead the nation successfully.

— Zarel's abdication speech, spoken in person (2020)

jOOST granted Smith the substantive title of "Duke of Hsed".

Diplomacy

Smith was responsible for most of New Eiffel's diplomatic relations. Smith first contacted President Baugh of Molossia around early August 2018, than contacted President Austin Jaax requesting to have mutual relations with the Republic of Iustus (modern day Empire of Iustus) on 28 September, however this request was denied. Iustus and New Eiffel instead became informal friends. The 2019 incarnation of the OAM was a huge step in New Eiffelic diplomacy. Smith served as the Ikonian Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 6 August 2019–17 May 2020, and currently serves as the Baustralian Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Chief Ambassador to the United Kingdom for Misberia, serving since 4 August 2019 and 14 July 2020 respectively. Smith formally founded the TOES Sector on 21 May 2020,[39] having signed a diplomatic treaty with various nations in the sector, including Aenderia[40] and Wegmat.

Activity In the MicroWiki Sector

Joining MicroWiki

Smith registered an account on MicroWiki on 27 September 2018 and made his first edit on 28 September.[41] Smith founded the now-defunct Organisation of Active Micronations as the New Eiffel Union of Micronations[42] (which defunct on 26 August 2019[43]), and invited various nations to participate, becoming political friends with Lahv Morris of Blue Army and Cooper Norfolk of Seybold. Smith's first impression to the wider community was one of ridicule, after engaging in online micronational warfare via MicroWiki talk pages with Aidan McGrath of the erstwhile Catholique Socialist Republic, after McGrath had declared war on New Eiffel because of their support of the furry fandom.[44] The incident, dubbed the 'Furry war'[45] was strongly criticised by members on MicroWiki@Discord. The incident consisted solely of exclaiming insults and threats with each other.[46] Both Smith and McGrath regretted the conflict and established peace after New Eiffel joined the League of Nations on 16 January 2019.

Early 2019

Smith was for his first three months of 2019 frequently criticised due to his past events. Smith established the now well-known Micronationalist of the Month award on 28 January, which has since built up a favourable and somewhat prestigious legacy. Luxor (Karl Friedrich), noting Smith's contributions to MicroWiki, made him a patroller on 24 February; Luxor also primarily created the website MicroWikiDictionary with some help from Smith, it is similar to Wiktionary, however for micronational phrases and terms. Smith became a non-residential subject of the Empire of Austenasia after founding the Austenasian Territory of Green Gate on 14 March, which he administers as its Governor as Lord Zarel Smith, Baron of Green Gate.[47] Smith co-founded the largely well-known Microcode project et al on 16 April.[22] The MicroWiki meme "@New Eiffel Government", involving users pinging ("@ing") Zarel's MicroWiki@Discord account started on 19 April.[48]

Rise (May—December 2019)

Smith became a popular and ubiquitous figure on MicroWikiDiscord throughout May to June, sending at his peak in August over 4,200 message every 30 days. Smith also joined various micronations and became active in intermicronational governments, primarily ones in the Discord community, such as the Aspen Empire, Zuhan Empire and Cycoldia. Between June—August, Smith worked on numerous MicroWiki projects. Smith ran free micronational advertisements on his userpage between 10 June—20 July. Smith ran the 2019 Make the Edit! game between 3–16 July.[49] After that, Smith created MicroWiki Mentions Chart! on 16 July, which is a weekly list which features a micronation every week which had the highest number mentions on MicroWiki@Discord -- this means the most times its name was posted (excluding bots and certain links); the minimum requirement is 7 mentions. Smith was made a Knight of the Order of the Compatriots of Prestige on 1 September as apart of Ikonia's 2019 Birthday Honours. Throughout September and October, Smith began partaking in intermicronational elections and governments, joining the Abeldane National Union and becoming the leader of the Social Democratic Party in Mahuset. On 27 September, Smith celebrated what he called his one year "Microversary", celebrating his one year anniversary on MicroWiki. On 25 December, Smith, alongside Leon Montan and Anna Telford, founded the elite, invitation-only social club and organisation TOES.[30]

2020

For New Year Honours, Smith was made a Member of the Iustian Order of Ongwanada[25] and the Millanian Most Glorious Order of Millanian Excellence for "outstanding service to the community."[26] Notably, Smith also made the first edit on MicroWiki for the year 2020. On 28 January, Smith announced he had began writing his first book The Micronation Index: A Book About Micronationalism. Between 28 January—5 February, Smith participated in the Grand Theft Auto V affair, a sarcastic conflict between various members on a MicroWiki talk page.[50] Smith became a wiki administrator on MicroWiki on 2 February, and was also voted Dime's Micronationalist of the Month for February 2020, winning with a total of nine votes ahead of three other nominees. Throughout March—April, Smith ran in various elections and gained over eighteen different offices in intermicronational organisations and micronations, such as the GUM, Cupertino Alliance, TOES, and micronations like Essexia (becoming the Minister of Culture); Smith also began expanding his legal knowledge. On 1 May, Smith was made an administrator on MicroWiki@Discord, and became Deputy President of Ponderosa Hills on 7 May, and Premier of Nievenorte on 16 May. Furthermore, he also continued expanding his legal career. Smith ran the 2020 Make the Edit! game between 8–18 June. Between 30 June—5 July, Smith participated in the satirical TOES-Almendria War by working as a spy for TOES, until he was found out after an alleged information leak within TOES took place.

Aside from his reign, Smith has been serving as the de facto Ministry of Transportation since early 2018, made official on 12 February 2019.[54] Smith was the prime minister candidate and leader of the Socialist Scandinavian Party from September 2018 until December 2019, than later briefly became a member of the Conservative Party, however after being demoted decided to leave the party and act neutral in New Eiffelic politics. A new act was later passed detailing that the Prince of New Eiffel could not run in general elections. Smith planned to run as an independent in the March 2020 mayoral elections, however the elections never took place. After Smith abdication on 20 June, he announced he may consider joining politics again.

Abelden

Smith is a member of the Abeldane National Union and has ran for it in every election. Smith won the by-election for the newly created called eleventh seat for the Reichsversammlung. It was creates by the than-Emperor, Newton, to increase the size of the Empire's legislature. It was the closest electoral victory in a by-election running for the Abeldane National Union, winning the by-election by two votes, having received 18 votes, against his opponent, Chase Nanatovich of Social Ecology, who received 16 votes, narrowly winning the seat with 52.9% of the vote on the third count.[24] Smith held his seat in the 2019 federal election.[56] On 9 March, Smith became the Minister of Orthography for Morgannwg. On 1 April, Smith became the Attorney General for the Sixth Renwick Cabinet in Abelden.[57] On 29 June, Smith lost his seat to Brandon Wu of Liberty Front.[58]

Essexia

Smith founded the Shrek Super Party, a satirical populist big-tent party, which praises Shrek, gained one seat in the 2020 general election which was held between 1-3 March, and Smith became the Minister of Culture. Smith founded the party on 14 February 2020, making it one of his Shrek Super Party parties, not expecting to win any votes. Smith self-declared it as an "anti-government, anti-communist, pro-LGBT rights, anti-austerity, pro-socialism, pro-unionist" political party. On the 16–17 February, the party released a series of campaign and promotional materials that were met with high praise in Essexia; they contained manifesto promises which appealed to many of the younger Essexian demographic, such as 'If the Shrek Super Party wins Zarel Smith with read the entire Shrek script and sing All Star.' Similarly, the release of their official campaign video was met with high critical acclaim, with one viewing on the Instagram describing it as the "greatest piece of both Essexian cinematography and propaganda." The party received 13 votes, which equated to around 8% of the total vote share. As per Essexian electoral law, this entitled them to one seat in the Parliament of Essexia. Smith was thus made a Lord of Essexia, becoming known also as Lord Zarel of Essexia, though he uses the title Lord Shrek of Essexia, and he became the Minister of Culture, a position which is widely regarded as being a perfect platform for the implementation of his ideas within the Cabinet of Essexia.[59][51] Smith was later involved in the Snakey Saturday scandal.

Posaf

Smith is a member of the Conservative Party and has ran for it in every election. On 16 January, the province of Nievenorte had its first local elections for a small council, the first time a Friends administrative region has done this, and Smith of the Conservatives were one of the two elected. Smith was than elected the Premier of Nievenorte in the May 2020 election, winning with 7 votes, or 24.13%.

Ponderosa Hills

Smith created a Ponderosan Shrek Super Party, which later merged into the Canadian Isabelle Party to form the Canadian Isabelle - Shrek Super Party in order to receive more votes.[60] It gained four seats in the May 2020 general election.[52]

Austenasia

Smith became a non-residential subject of the Empire of Austenasia after founding the Austenasian Territory of Green Gate on 14 March 2019, which he administers as its Governor as Lord Zarel Smith, Baron of Green Gate.[47]

Others

Smith is the leader of the Social Democratic Party in Mahuset, claiming the position after noticing its vacancy.[1] Smith also registered a further two former Shrek Super Parties, one in Misberia and Caddia.

Activity in intermicronational organisations

Organisation of Active Micronations

The 2019 incarnation of the Organisation of Active Micronations which Smith founded on 21 November 2018 as the "New Eiffel Union of Micronations" attracted many newer and smaller nations.[61] The OAM was hardly successful, and despite its hardships, it made many newer nations aware of Smith as well as New Eiffel's existence and expanded New Eiffel's diplomatic relations - Former OAM members which are now prominent on MicroWiki include Aenopia, Ponderosa Hills and Lytera, all of which New Eiffel has positive relations with. Smith acted as de facto Chair until an actual Chair was elected.

Grand Unified Micronational

Logo of the GUM.

Smith is New Eiffel's primary delegate, being one of three New Eiffelic delegates to the GUM, and served as the Secretary for Micronational Development between 11 January—4 July 2020.[62] Smith is also a frequent and long-time supporter of the GUM.

Smith served as acting as Ad-Interim Press Secretary for the Grand Unified Micronational while Emperor Adam I focused on finishing his degree. Smith wrote nine articles on the minutes between 1 February until 30 March.[63] Smith co-founded the Help Joining the GUM project in July 2019, which was officially "integrated" by the GUM proper on 2 February,[64] a measure which in effect consists of recognition and endorsement from the parent organisation, and renamed the Grand Unified Micronational Development Initiative. On 28 March, Smith was voted as a Lobby Moderator for the GUM Discord server.[65] Smith suffered a huge loss as Jayden Lycon's running mate in the June 2020 Chair election.

Cupertino Alliance

Smith is New Eiffel's primary delegate, being one of three New Eiffelic delegates to the CA. On 25 March 2020, Smith became a Superior Judge,[66] and on 5 April he became the Notary General.[67] Smith often defends criticism targeted at the CA, and frequently praises it for its success in diplomacy and projects, as well as helping micronations develop.

Smith also participated in the Cupertino Alliance's 69 Hour Session held between 14 March—17 March 2020,[68] and his proposed anthem "THE UNITED MICRANATIONS is better", a song he made following a young inexperienced micronationalist jokingly mocking the GUM, became one of the two national anthems of the CA on 20 March, "having higher precedence", meaning that it gets to be played first.[69][g] This was repealed after the passing of the Anthem Act in early June 2020. The Cupertino Alliance also designed the current seal of New Eiffel.[71]

Micronational Olympic Federation

Smith has been the MOF's primary delegate since New Eiffel joined the organisation. Smith was made the Vice-President of Sanctioned Events on 17 October 2019. This was due to the success of the 2019 Micronational Rock Paper Scissors Tournament. So far, he has organised the 2020 MOF Rock Paper Scissors Tournament. Furthermore, Smith competed for New Eiffel in the 2020 MOF Games, where he won silver in Agar.io.

Plush Nation Cooperation Union

Zarel is the former President of the Assembly for the Plush Nation Cooperation Union. He held the position until the organisation went inactive due to Cristi's original disappearance.

Others

Smith was the founder and de facto Chair of the Christian Micronational Union from 4 September 2019–2 March 2020, until he disestablished it after months of inactivity. Smith also founded the current New Eiffelic Commonwealth project on 21 June 2019. Smith is the current sole delegate to the Asia-Pacific Alliance, and was formerly the sole delegate to the League of Professional Nations, North Atlantic Defense Union[72] and Commonwealth of Sovereignties (ComSov).[73]

Legal career

Having little to no experience, Smith began his legal career by becoming the Superior Judge in the Cupertino Alliance on 25 March 2020, and became involved in Kyexit between 18–22 April, which was peacefully resolved. Smith also became a Notary General for the CUP and became the Attorney General for the Sixth Renwick Cabinet in Abelden on 1 April. On 29 June, Smith lost his seat to Brandon Wu of Liberty Front, and thus lost his position as Attorney General. Smith later became a Supreme Judge in the Principality of Oceania on 27 May, being involved in multiple cases.

Influence

Smith has often been cited as being one of the most influential micronationalists in the "New Guard".[citation needed] In the MicroWiki General Survey conducted between 9–11 November 2019, a question asking people to fill in checkboxes from a list of eight MicroWiki micronationalists for which they had heard of Smith was tied alongside Jonathan I of Austenasia for the most with 91.2% out of 34 respondents.[74] Smith was ranked fourth of ten by Nicholas Randouler in his Monthly MicroWiki Micronationalists Power Index for May 2020.[75]

Wiki editing

Zarel is an administrator on MicroWiki, and one of the most active and dedicated contributors.[h][77][78] Zarel registered an account on MicroWiki on 27 September 2018, and made his first edit on 28 September, which was the page creation of The Principality of New Eiffel.[79] Zarel has been a wiki administrator on MicroWiki since 2 February 2020.[80] Zarel made his 1,000th edit on MicroWiki on 9 January 2019,[81] and his 10,000th edit on MicroWiki on 7 June.[82] On 7 November, Zarel became the user with the most edits on MicroWiki with 18,607 edits,[83] and is also the first user to hit 20,000 edits which he achieved on 5 December.[84]

Zarel claims to have allegedly spent somewhere near 1,000 hours on MicroWiki.[85][i]

Zarel also frequently edits or has edited a large number of other wikis, including the MicroWiki-owned MicroWikiDictionary (50+ edits) and MicroCommons (20+ edits)[86] Royal Wiki,[87] the former wikis New Eiffel Wiki,[88] The Konmalehth Libraries[89] and Un-Recognized Nations,[90] as well as also editing Wikipedia (300+ edits),[91] IMDb (1,000+ edits), Awful Movies Wiki (6 edits)[92] WikiFur (30+ edits)[93] and WikiTree (20+ edits)[94] among various others.

Other MicroWiki projects

MicroWikiDictionary and MicroWikiQuotes

Luxor primarily created the website MicroWikiDictionary with some help from Smith on 7 April 2019. Smith is also an administrator on the site. It is similar to Wiktionary, however for micronational phrases and terms. As of July 2020, MicroWikiDictionary has over 40 entries.[95] Smith created the unaffiliated MicroWikiQuotes on 23 January 2020, built completely on MicroWiki userpages.[96] It serves as a free online compendium of quotations from micronationalists and other creative micronational works in the English-language, including things such as books, transcripts, fiction, speeches and more. It claims to differ from MicroCommons, being that it does not include things like acts, files or other documentation. It started two weeks behind its original schedule, on 17 April 2020 at 3:00 AM; UTC and ended 18 April at 4:00 AM; UTC. The edit-a-thon was however seen as only mildly successful. Smith made over 250 edits during the time he partook in the edit-a-thon.

MicroWiki Mentions Chart!

MicroWiki Mentions Chart! is a weekly list which features the micronation of that week that had the highest number mentions on MicroWiki@Discord -- this means the most times its name was posted (excluding bots and certain links); the minimum requirement is 7 mentions. Although the list dates back to the foundation of the Discord, Micro Mentions Chart! was created on 16 July 2019, and is still active. The list also features an explanation to why that micronation of the week was mentioned so often, as well as a weekly streak. As of 6 July 2020, the most mentioned micronation in one week was Hosamia with 167 on 11 May 2019, closely followed by Verdis on 6 July 2019 with 165; and the longest streak was Aenderia with 5 weeks in a row between 29 September—27 October 2018.[101]

Userpage advertisements

Example of what the advertisements looked at, created with
[[file:filename.png|link=advert link|612px]]

Smith ran free micronational advertisements on his userpage between 10 June—20 July 2019. It was a banner ad at the top of his MicroWiki usrpage, created by adding a file at the top centre with the link= option to link to other websites or even MicroWiki pages. Advertisements were given out for free every five days to anyone who asked; if multiple people requested for an advertisement, it would be randomly decided who got it. It was discontinued after fears from Smith over admin intervention.[102]

MicroGuiness Book

MicroGuiness Book was a micronational version of Guinness World Records created on 5 November 2019. The name 'MicroGuiness Book' was stolen directly from Daniel Lee, from an idea stolen from Nicholas Randouler. The idea never took off, and was abandoned a day after its creation as most records could not be easily verified.[103]

Film career

Smith in InterYet to Come (2019), the image later became associated with the Zedposting meme

Smith is an independent filmmaker, film critic, actor, producer and cinematographer. Smith has created for Z&jProductions, alongside other New Eiffelic film studios and independently, over twenty short-films.[107][108]

Originally beginning his film criticism in the middle of 2016, he founded ZSR Film Reviews on 9 March 2017,[109] and later began to take an interest in acting and filmmaking himself. Smith and his brother jOOST founded the film studio and distributor Z&jProductions[110] on 18 April, Smith than created the horror short The Doll a day later. Batman v Superman: The Better Version (2017), a parody of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), was released on 11 July. It was co-directed by both Zarel and jOOST. A further four Z&jProductions films were released that year. In 2018, Smith began to take an interest in independent filmmaking, and created the surrealist Layers (2018) and horror The Farmer (2018) in June. Earlier in April, Smith began taking filmmaking and theatre acting classes at Esher Church of England High School, and appeared in two films the school created. In September 2018, Smith auditioned for a role in a comedy school-themed short film. On 22 September, Smith went to a second audition for the film, however did not get the role. Smith became a fan of surrealism, and alongside him still creating films for Z&jProductions, he continued to experiment with his own films, and created the surrealist Being Born Twelve Times (2019) in June, and the psychological thriller Underneath (2019) in December. Smith stared in a further three films for the school, Cutlery (2019), Mostly Haunted (2019), and most notably InterYet to Come (2019), which came second place in the 2019 Childnet Film Competition.[111] On 22 July, Smith was made the subtitle translator for the upcoming film Data Disaster in Afrikaans.[112] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Smith alongside the other students had to film a scene for his film school and submit it to them so they could edit all the footage together to form a comprehensive story, this was for Panic in the Sitting Room! (2020). Smith than created Eye Opener (2020) for the school, and independently created the surreal Insaniam (2020), which he says is his favourite film to date, and the thriller Hiking Trail (2020).

Smith has also created two abstract[113] feature-films, Soothing Ring of Fire (2019), his first, an avant-garde[114] film which is ten hours and thirty-four minutes of slow motion footage of an unchanging view of an electronic heater fan, and with no conventional narrative or characters, largely reduces the experience of cinema to the passing of time,[115] and Ambient Walks, a video of people walking for 2 hours and 7 minutes, looped over and over again until it cuts off and ends after exactly 1,800 minutes (30 hours) of runtime - leaving some to call it the ninth longest film ever made.[116]

Statistical work

Smith founded the statistical company Statistic-Fire with Anthony Dickson on 8 October 2018, which later merged with DIME on 21 October 2019 to form Statistic-Dime.

Surveys

Smith began by conducting the controversial Micronational Popularity Index survey between 22 January—12 March 2019. The survey was his first on micronationalism, and had 44 respondents. It was however criticised for its small sample size and the way it was conducted. Smith later conducted the MicroWiki Editors Survey between 29 June—1 July, a survey with questions regarding people who edit on MicroWiki.[137] The survey had 29 respondents. Smith conducted New Eiffel's first and so far only census on 6 July.[35] Smith than conducted the MicroWiki General Survey between the 9 November—11 November, which had 34 respondents. The survey featured ten questions, some relating to communication methods, such as "Do you use the MicroWiki forums?", approval or disapproval of the Grand Unified Micronational, and micronational warfare. The survey reportedly found interesting and some surprising results. Smith co-hosted the 19th MicroWiki Influence Survey in January 2020.[138] Between 1-4 March 2020, Smith and Jayden Lycon held the Dime-Curio Micronational Organisation Poll, which is a poll used to rank intermicronational organisations.[139] Smith later conducted the GUM Member States Positivity Survey between 7–8 July and again during 9–10 July, which had 40 respondents.[140]

Annual LGBTQ+ rights survey

In early August 2019, Smith made a survey on LGBTQ+ rights, called the 2019 Statistic Fire's LGBT Rights Index. The index lists 26 micronations, ranked from the scores -15 to 15 based on LGBTQ+ rights. The Index received endorsements from various micronations, including Mahuset[141] and Cycoldia, with Cycoldia citing that it was proof of their "great strides to an amazing society". Smith later announced it would be annual. The 2020 survey was conducted by Statistic-Dime between 5–15 May 2020, and lists 34 nations. It had different and revised questions as well as answer options. The survey was also received very positively.

Indexes

Smith also created the Micronational Macronation Index, which was not a survey but a list of macronations by number of micronations located in them. The research for the index was taken between 6 February and 27 February. Smith did something similar with the Micronational Leaders Index, which was researched between 5 February - 10 March, taking longer than the Micronational Macronation Index. Smith later worked on the Micronational Peace Index and the Micronational Tourism Index, however both were cancelled.

Music career

From late 2016 onwards, Zarel started taking an interest in producing music, and has produced a number of EDM, house and dubstep songs under the stage-name "DJ Zeddy".[142] Two albums have been released thus far, comprising fourteen songs in total, with two more albums having been announced. Zarel has also released three singles, Thunder, a song featuring vocals by jOOST Smith, Explosive, and a comedic song released with a music video about a kid making fun of the Grand Unified Micronational, titled "THE UNITED MICRANATIONS is better", mocking criticism of the Grand Unified Micronational and YAMOs. The song has since become Zarel's signature song, and also later became of the two national anthems of the Cupertino Alliance on 20 March 2020, "having higher precedence", meaning that it gets to be played first.[143][j]
