Weed Removal Industries (WRI) was a weed control company in the Principality of New Eiffel ran by Janus Smith—the only such business in the micronation. Headquartered in a room in the upstairs floor of the Main Building in New Leeds, Weed Removal Industries used manual removal methods such as manually pulling weeds out of the ground with screwdrivers. It was formed by Smith in March and disestablished on 1 November 2020 following the dissolution of New Eiffel. Weed Removal Industries' largest clients were New Eiffel Gardens and the Rugbull Field, both in Plitvice. By 20 July, the company reported a revenue of £65 (ℕ65,000 New Eiffelic ping)—a respectable amount for a New Eiffelic company.

History

Persicaria hydropiper weeds at Unnamed Circle, Új Repülő

In early 2020, Janus Smith began seeking freelance work in order to save up money for the purchase of computer games. The work he found initially consisted of cleaning for businesses in the Main Building and cooking, though he later found himself working in gardens—trimming plants, picking up litter and assisting citizen George Smith with outside work. In March, George asked Smith to pick weeds from the grounds of New Eiffel School in Új Repülő and the Rugbull Field in Plitvice. George first offered £1 (ℕ1,000 New Eiffelic ping) for every weed pulled, but realised that the amount was too large and decreased it to 10p (ℕ100) instead.

Smith initially used pruning shears to remove the weeds, but later found that screwdrivers were easier. Thereafter, Smith started pulling weeds under Weed Removal Industries. The only weed control service in New Eiffel, Smith also served New Eiffel Gardens—the only garden in the principality. On 20 July, Smith designed a logo for the business with the help of Zabëlle Skye. That same day, Weed Removal Industries' profits were reported at £65 (ℕ65,000). On 1 November, New Eiffel dissolved and the company was subsequently dissolved as well. However, Smith would continue to regularly pull weeds until at least early 2021.

Services

Headquartered in a room in the upstairs floor of the Main Building in New Leeds, Weed Removal Industries used manual removal methods such as directly pulling weeds out of the ground and loosening them with screwdrivers. Smith initially used pruning shears to remove the weeds, but later found screwdrivers to be much easier. Depending on the size of the weed and difficulty of the task, Weed Removal Industries generally charged 10p (ℕ100) per weed pulled. As the only weed control service in New Eiffel, Weed Removal Industries held a monopoly over the sector. Its largest clients were New Eiffel Gardens and the Rugbull Field, both in Plitvice, although the company also pulled weeds from the Main Route 1, Seat Square in New Leeds and the grounds of New Eiffel School and Unnamed Circle in the capital Új Repülő. The main weeds the company pulled were Groundsel (Senecio), dandelions (Taraxacum) and Persicaria hydropiper—each of which posed a threat to the agriculture in New Eiffel.
