The Imperial Federal Republic of Veritalia (German: Reichsbundesrepublik von Veritalia), more commonly known simply as Veritalia, was a short-lived micronational state consisting of four constiuent states. The micronation was founded as a result of a merger between the Democratic People's Republic of Erusia and the People's Popular Socialist Republic of Bzan, with the intention of returning to the original Licentian vision. The nation takes it's name of Veritalia from a previous short-lived attempted to unite Bzan and Licentia that was known as Veritalia. The State assers itself to be one of the micronations of Licentian heritage. Although the State was an English nation, it seeks to loosely mimic German culture and politics. This decision was made in an effort to strike a balance between Licentian culture and Bzanite-Erusian culture. Just a day or two into it's life, internal political disputes resulted in the collapse of the original nation and the establishment of Nova Licentia.

History

Early History

The concept of creating a micronation was first concieved in early 2007 by Peter Gaffney as a cultural development project within a micronational setting, with the intention of creating a micronational ethnicity with a genuine, rich and unique culture. In september he approached the now-King Colum II with the idea, seeking to establish a constitutional monarchy in which Colum would reign as King and Gaffney as Prime Minister, allowing him freedom to carry out his project and the social experiment it entailed. On October 27, 2007, the Royal Constitution was signed and the Kingdom of Licentia was created.

Kingdom of Licentia

Although Gaffney had intended to become Prime Minister, a difficulty in finding citizens who wanted to participate in government rather than the Nobility sparked the new King to rescind the Constitution and establish Gaffney as High Lord Advisor to the Crown instead. Although this was the most important role at Court in what is now known as Fuedal Licentian society, it effectively removed Gaffney's power to conduct his cultural experiment and promote the development of a rich micronational culture. In early 2008 he began to express discontent to another Licentian, Geraint Rennie, with the way the Kingdom was being run. In addition to their lack of power the two men were frustrated by the 'bourgeious' way in which the nation was run.

In March 2008 the two began to make plans for a possible revolution in Licentia that would depose the King and create a Licentian Republic, founded on the principles of Democratic Socialism. These plans did not come to fruition however due to popular support for the Crown at the time. So, in early April, Gaffney and Rennie made preperations to lead a revolution in Licentia that would instead seek to create an independent Republican State that would break away from the Kingdom by announcing a declaration of independence. On April 28 this revolution, known as the Bzanite Uprising, occurred and the following day Gaffney signed the Bzanite Declaration of Independence, formally establishing the Democratic People's Republic of Bzan.

Licentia and Bzan

At the time of Bzan's declaration of independence, King Colum was on a State visit to the Kingdom of Uantir and unable to directly respond to the issue. This sparked an event termed by the Principality of Cakeland as the Bzan War of Independence, though no armed conflict ever took place. Bzan's new leadership immediately set about finding allies should Licentia have sought to challenge their claim to national autonomy and dissolve them back into the Kingdom. The members of the Licentian government acting in the King's stead made no move to recognise, nor condemn, the Bzanite struggle for independence directly.

On May 10, King Colum finally met with Gaffney to discuss the future of the Bzanite and Licentian states. The two nations came to an agreement on May 12 of mutual recognition and cooperation, although the terms of this agreement were later altered to be less oppressive for the Bzanites. The formal treaty was signed on May 18 following the conclusion of all business between the two leaders. At the time however, Bzan was plagued by internal political strife and a breakdown of communication resulted in Gaffney being mistakenly informed that Geraint Rennie was seeking to seize power and rejoin with Licentia in exchange for a position of power in the Licentian government.

On May 26, believing that the troubles in Bzan had run too deeply to deal with, Gaffney announced the dissolution of the State and restored the land to Licentian rule. This news came as the Licentian populus made the decision by a direct democratic vote to transition from Absolute Monarchy to Constitutional Monarchy. King Colum invited Peter Gaffney back to Licentie to lead the democratic reform that would need to take place. He accepted and was restored to his former status as High Lord Advisor.

Despite initially accepting the offer, Gaffney resigned just a few days after establishing the new democratic system. He claimed that Licentia had fallen too far from his original ideals and that he had no place in the new Licentian State. In recognition for his efforts and contributions, Gaffney was recognised as the Father of the Nation and as the Architect of Licentian Democracy.

June Revolution

The departure of Gaffney in late May sparked an outcry from the remaining Socialist elements, especially from the Bzanites now within Licentia. Their leader, a Licentian woman named Michelle Yui, created an underground movement known as the Movement for Socialist Reform with the goal of overthrowing the King and establishing a Socialist Republic in keeping with Gaffney's ideals. On June 1, 2008 Michelle Yui lead an open revolution against the Crown and on June 4 the Socialists succeeded in seizing power from the hands of the Monarchy. Later that same day, they declared the dissolution of the Kingdom of Licentia and the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Licentia.

Licentian Civil War

The June Revolution sparked civil war in Licentia with Royalists striving to re-establish the Kingdom. The Socialist Republic's leadership immediately set about extensively reforming society and the State, backed by a number of foreign powers who had previously supported Bzan's struggle for independence. Gaffney and Rennie both openly endorsed, although provided no assistance, for the Revolution. Despite his support however Gaffney knew that the two States could not hope to survive together effectively. Diplomatic talks were held between the two parties with Gaffney as a mediator and, eventually, the Licentian Agreement was signed.

Decline and Revival

Despite the agreement that granted both States autonomy, neither the Kingdom nor the Socialist Republic could survive the rift that had formed. The Socialist Republic quickly collapsed and the Kingdom followed soon after, although a short-lived attempt was made by the Queen Deanna to re-establish the Kingdom under a new name. Although Licentia was left untouched for a long time, in early October 2008 - the month of the Kingdom's one year anniversary - the Bzanite and Licentian leaders met again to discuss the establishment of a new State in keeping with Gaffney's ideas. On October 20, the United Royal Kingdom of Licentia and Bzan and Her Commonwealth was established from the ashes of both Licentian States and Bzan.

Birth of Erusia

When political disagreements, in particular over foreign policy, plagued the young United Royal Kingdom of Licentia and Bzan it was decided to dissolve the State and establish Erusia in it's place as a new, independent nation with a new leadership. King Colum II stood down as King and was replaced by Peter I of Erusia, who became King Peter I. In the aftermath of the leadership changed many aspects of Licentian culture were salvaged and many others were destroyed. Erusia effectively moved backwards on the scale of political evolution, making the transition from a Constitutional Monarchy to an Absolute Monarchy with Feudal principles. On October 28, 2008, the former King Colum (then styled as High Lord Colum McKenna) was created as the Lord-Regent Santica by the King, establishing the Royal Regency of Santica for him to rule. This move demonstrated soldiarity between new Erusia and old Licentia, as well as establishing King Peter I as the ruler of more than one country to bolster the prestiege of his crown.

In November 2008, political disagreements that had plagued previous Licentian states emerged once more. Socialist forces in Erusia society called for revolution and the restoration of what they termed "Bzanite Democracy". On November 8, an agreement was reached to make the move from a Kingdom to a Democratic People's Republic and King Peter I formally abolished the crown. On November 9 the new Republic was formed under the leadership of the Communist Party of Erusia. On November 28, 2008 the first Erusian opposition party, the People's Democratic Front, was established. In November 2008, it was announced that the first Executive Election would be held in December 2008.

Erusian Political Crisis

When all ballots had been cast in the December 2008 Executive Election, the Erusian government arranged for an independent ballot checker in the People's Republic of Yongheng to verify the results of the election. According to Maria Carlisle, leader of the opposition during the election, the Communist Party is guilty of electoral fraud and instructed Yonghengese officials to alter the ballot to ensure their power. The Front also asserts that the Communist Party prevented key individuals from voting for fear that the election would result in their defeat. On December 21 Maria Carlisle declared that she had the support of the Republic of Petorio and that she demanded an immediate recount or second election. The Erusian National Communist Party continues to assert that it won a descive victory and that it will not authorise any recount. Upon hearing that Petorio had withdrawn it's support for Maria Carlisle, Kai Roosevelt issued a public statement declaring that the matter would be submitted to the courts for verification.

Constitutional Reform

Whilst the courts were arguing over the case of electoral fraud, Peter Gaffney - speaking from the Bzanite capital - opnely denounced Erusia for "failing to effectively peruse Rennie-Gaffneyist socio-economic theories" and "becoming so embroiled in the political aspect of the Great Socialist Experiment that they [the Erusian government] have neglected the true purpose behind our struggle". Following the statements, which were carefully kept secret by the Communist Party, it was agreed that a multiparty conference would be chaired by Gaffney. The conference was brief but it was announced that all parties had agreed to pass a Constitutional Reform Act, followed by a Erusian-Bzanite Agreement of Mutual Assimilation that would merge Erusia with the People's Popular Socialist Republic of Bzan. Later that day, Veritalia was born.

Geography and Demographics

The United Royal Kingdom is made up of four states, three of which are regarded as constituent countries. These are the Federal State of Lesser Veritalia, the Federal State of Licentia, the Federal State of Bzan and the Federal State of Erusia. Lesser Veritalia is the seat of power for the Federal government and is the only state that has not, at some point in the history of the Licentian nations, been fully independent. The other three states make up a region known as Greater Veritalia.
