Etymology

Hortania is named after the suburb of Horsforth, located in Leeds. Hortania began in and remains centred around the town.

Flag

The flag is a blue cross placed on a white background with a border of gold around the cross.

The flag was designed as a hybrid of the flag of England, instead incorporating the colours of Leeds United, Hortania's local football team.

History

Before Armlania

Republic of Armlania

The Republic of Armlania was formed in 2011 as a project by Damian Billbrough. After several years of inactivity, it re-emerged in 2013 and began to interact with local micronations such as the Sorrenian Federation and the Kingdom of Catan.

Armlania underwent a coup in 2014 when mass left-wing migration led to a landslide election of a left-wing party. Angered by this, Billbrough declared Armlania deceased, and formed the Republic of Hortania.

Republic of Hortania

Hortania built upon the successes of Armlania. It established a working parliamentary system, foreign relations and began to create somewhat of an identity.

Eventually, in 2015, Hortania fell into political crisis, as the leader of the Islamic Unity Party was accused by Alexei Janiszewski of homophobia. Initially losing the trial, Lewis (IUP leader) called for a mistrial which was granted. The fiasco significantly weakened Hortania's parliamentary system, and eventually led to decline.

Hortanian Empire

After a long period of decline, Hortania was reformed as an Empire, under the absolute rule of Billbrough. After shrinking the citizenry and declaring war on nearby Akebar, Hortania again fell into inactivity.

Several new political parties and schemes were formed to try and reignite the micronation, but nothing succeeded, and Hortania remained dormant for several years.

Unification With Sorrenia

Several months after the restoration of Sorrenia, Billbrough was approached by King Ronald I, who proposed a significant expansion of Sorrenia which would include Hortania.

Billbrough spent several days considering the offer, but eventually agreed. As his final act as Emperor of Hortania, he signed the 'Treaty of Hortanian Unity', which expanded Hortania's own borders and also established it as a county of Sorrenia under the direct rule of the Sorrenian King and his Council.

Politics

Hortania is politically heterogeneous; the New Monarchists do not run in Hortania, and are instead represented by the Hortanian National Party, a political organisation dating back to the Hortanian Republic which now serves as a loyalist centre-right party who win seats largely in Hortania's historical core regions.

The Republicans receive significant support in predominantly working-class and ethnically diverse areas, especially the city of Bradford.

The NDLP receive the plurality of their votes from Hortania, largely given the sizeable student population. The three universities in Leeds result in a student population of 65,000, from whom the NDLP source most of their support.
