Titania Gaia Brigid Smith (known simply as Titania Smith) is a micronationalist, politician, activist, private security guard, student, blogger, former sports executive, and Cascadian military leader, who has been serving as the 5th Ceannaire (President) of the Greater Cascadian Republic since February 2020, having previously served as the 2nd President during the nation's inception, and as the 3rd Premier. Smith has largely ruled with autocratic powers as President of Cascadia, under the title of Ceannaire, becoming the official Celtic styling of the Office. She also mans the office of State Affairs, and served as the 2nd Premier of the Portlandian Soviet Socialist Republic. She is one of the modern pioneers of micronationalism having been in the community since 2010 and one of several transgender leaders.

Early Life and Education

Smith was born in Napa, California on September 4, 1991 to Al Foster and Julia Smith in a working class family. Her father deserted her and her mother shortly after she was born. She never met him and because of this, supposedly has held a strong resentment. Smith's mother, Julia, was a 30-year addict and lived in abstract poverty for many years, never staying in one location for very long. She lived with her grandparents, Diana and Augustus Smith, from the age of 7 until she was 26. Her mother married in 2003 but her husband (Smith's stepfather) died in June 2011. Smith also lost her grandfather in December 2012 to diabetes and kidney failure. Smith went to Kindergarten in Napa Valley, but went to another school after moving in with her grandparents where she was enrolled from 1st to 8th grade. She completed her primary education in June 2006 and enrolled in secondary school that same August. In 2008, Smith passed her California High School Exit Exam (or CAHSEE) with proficient marks in English and average in Math. She obtained her high school diploma in 2010 in general education. While in high school, she was President of a club that raised money for disadvantaged children in the community and provided medical supplies for tribal clinics in Tanzania. Smith plans to complete her post-secondary education in the future, spending much of the last decade independently studying philosophy, politics, government and economics, and public administration. She plans to earn a Masters in Education and a Bachelors in Public Administration. In October 2014, Smith's mother, Julia, sought treatment for substance abuse and is still currently clean and sober today, working as a drug and alcohol counselor, having received her Associates of Science in 2015.

Politics

Smith's political career began in 2009 with the creation of "Star Nation", which later became the catalyst for the "Starland Project" or simply Starland. Following the end of this project in 2012, Smith created the short-lived state of Sonora to which she served as monarch. It was around this time, Smith would soon meet a young, charismatic micronationalist, Casey Hamlin, and would dually hold citizenship in Hamlin's projects for the next two years. Smith stood as the Social Liberal Party nominee for President of the Hamlinian Republic in the 2012 Hamlinian Presidential Election. Her opponent was then-Vice President, Daniel Stefanko. Smith lost by a narrow margin of two votes, gave her concession and retired briefly from micronationalism. However, just a few months later in December 2012, Smith returned to found Costa Dorada, a state of the Oasis Islands to which she would serve as Governor and Senator of until the micronation was dissolved in April 2014. During her tenure, she helped found the Oasis People's Party, which Hamlin led and Smith guided, serving from January 1-November 11, 2013 as Majority Leader of the Senate. She then became Minority Leader and Vice President, until April 19, 2014, after switching party loyalties, founding and leading the United Leftist Party. On April 28, 2014, 9 days after the dissolution of the Oasis Islands, the still existent Costa Dorada was left as the sole existing remnant of the Oasis Islands. Without federal leadership, Governor Smith declared the state to be an independent socialist republic, serving as its paramount leader until November 30 when she left to pursue opportunities on the opposite end of the United States. During the Costa Dorada era, she also formed a side project known as Marxia, to which she served as 1st Premier from September 7 until November 30. Marxia was jointly co-governed by Costa Dorada and the Republic of Promesa, another micronation that Smith had become involved with, to which Smith also served as its Senator. After Smith's departure, Costa Dorada was dissolved but Marxia never formally got the same treatment and remained a de facto over-lands territory of Promesa.

Upon her return from her cross-America trip on February 8, 2015, Smith retook posession of Marxia and resumed her position as Premier, founding the People's Commune of Shaoshan, and serving as Chief Minister from its founding until the following May 15th. She went on to serve as 1st,3rd, and 6th President of Shaoshan, the 1st stint from May 15 until the overthrow of the Republic, to which she led a movement to restore it, her 3rd stint from August 1, 2015 to January 15, 2016, having been elected as head of the National Assembly and concurrently as Prime Minister until March 17, and her last from April 4 to September 15, 2016. During her tenure as Prime Minister, Smith began focusing more on internal affairs and less on the foreign world. This has become known to Cascadian historians as "The Great Isolation" or the "Lonely March". As Promesa slipped into inactivity and eventual dissolution, Smith wrote to inform its President, Ariel Yaari, that as Premier of Marxia, it would be declared an independent state effective immediate. On July 13, Smith led a liberation of the entity, and the state became a protectorate and, later, a state. Smith was elected to resume her role as Premier in August 2015 and became the 3rd Premier of Marxia, only to be succeeded one term later by her mother, Julia. The project was eventually abandoned and the territory incorporated into the larger City of Shaoshan in 2018.

Smith reigned twice as Shaoshanian monarch over a imperial Shaoshan but both times abdicated to her little sister and led coups both times to restore the republic, taking advantage of her sister's young age to reassume power. She would reassume the title of President of the Republic and consolidate power around her as Generalissimo of the Republic until being overthrown in September of 2016. Despite being out of power, she wielded great influence and used it to strike a formidable merger between the Sonoran Alliance to form the Sonoran Empire, a re-creation of the former Sonoran state. During the course of the following two and a half years, Smith's influence would see her in a recurring loop of returning and falling from power through revolutions and continued instability, eventually leading to an economic and government collapse in April 2019. By then, the Cascadian state had already been established as part of the Sonoran Confederation. Cascadia declared independence but the political turmoil continued culminating in the Cascadian War in May. It was only after this conflict, that a period of semi-stability began to exist with Cascadia beginning to form the basis of a democracy. For nine months, it was presided over by Animalian groups until Smith's election in February 2020. Smith instituted many economic and social reforms as part of the development of the ideal of Smithism and Cascadian socialism.

In the midst of economic ruin and the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, Smith used this to get the Cascadian legislature to enact sweeping emergency powers to be invested in her office which she used to consolidate power, suspend the constitution and begin a crackdown on political opponents. In June 2020, in the wake of the racial protests, Smith aligned Cascadia with Antifascist and antiracist groups such as Black Lives Matter and began to wage a militant cold war against Donald Trump, his administration and supporters, Trumpism and ultranationalist and ultraconservative groups like Proud Boys and Patriot Prayer. This extended to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, and Homeland Security agents, whom Smith referred to as "terrorist organizations", in addition to Portland Police following the [[w:2020 deployment of federal forces in the United States|US deployment into the Portland metro area. This led to Smith referring to the US as a "state sponsor of terror" and a "fascist dictatorship" with agents being referred to as "agents of imperialism". This came to a head after the 2020 US Presidential election as fanatical and angry supporters began rebelling against the Smith regime, leading to a crackdown on political dissent and purging of former Smith loyalists who disagreed with her autocratic handling of the situation. This led to a four months long political instability, seeing a change in governments (all led by Smith in one fashion or another) not seen since the instability under Sonora. In March 2021, over a year after taking power, Smith managed to reunite the left factions in order to defeat the right wing forces in Cascadia and re-establish control over the Cascadian state.

Political Views

Ideologigcal Leanings

Smith identifies as a classical Marxist with a Marxist-Leninist emphasis and influenced and inspired by the philosophies and theories of Mao Zedong Thought, Ho Chi Minh Thought, Castroism, Chavismo, Guevarism, and as an ardent Third Worldist. Smith is known for her ardent stances and pieces on socialism and progressive politics (known as "Titania Smith Thought" or "Smithism") She has been vocal in her opposition of fascists and the rising tide of racism from politicians and police, remaining a staunch opponent of Donald Trump and his supporters.

Smith is a US registered non-partisan voter but is an registered observer of the California National Party, with whom she has been active with since December of 2015, and the Cascadian independence movement, whom she has been active with since 2018 and is a member of the Cascadian Independence Party and Bioregional Party.

LGBTQ+ Rights and Gender Egalitarianism

Smith is an open advocate for LGBT equality and supported the "Matthew Shepard Act (MSA)" as a member of the Oasis Islands Senate. She also authored parts of the Shaoshan, Sonoran and Cascadian Constitutions, protecting LGBTQ equality and is an active member of Human Rights Campaign and supporter of the American Civil Liberties Union. Smith has actively and aggressively opposed right wing, anti-gay activists and micronationalists, often engaging in Cold War-style politics with certain micronations. While actively supporting same-sex marriage, the right to adopt, serving openly in the military, donating blood, gender transition and using the bathroom of their gender identity, Smith has faced both praise and criticism alike for her ultra-progressive views. Regardless, Smith still is a micronational activist for LGBTQ+ equality and an active supporter of gay rights who believes that equality for sexual and gender minorities is no less of a priority than any other forms of equality and is the mark of a truly democratic state. Smith identifies as a transfeminist, who has strongly advocated for women's rights, especially for often disenfranchised trans women, and is known for standing strong on abortion rights issues. She is also a proponent of minimum wage increases and equal pay for women and equal opportunity for both genders.

Decriminalization of Drugs

Smith supports the idea of decriminalization of all drugs and legalization of marijuana and has supported legislation for the legalization of psilocybin for medical use. She cites the progressive drug policies of tolerance in Europe as her basis for her argument, believing that marijuana has medicinal use and is not addictive and should be used as an alternative to prescription drugs, which she considers "Drugs of capitalistic corporate monopoly". However, on the issue if anti-vax activism, Smith has referred to the movement as "reactionary and dangerous". She also cites the large potential of monetary profit and the potential to make a gender egalitarian and worker-owned enterprise to generate prosperity and greater wealth distribution. Harder drugs like cocaine and heroin, she believes, should be decriminalized and treated as a public health crisis rather than a criminal act and should be a subject to mental health and medical treatment rather than criminal rehabilitation.

Gun Rights

Smith is a pro-gun advocate who has defended the right to bear arms on the grounds of an armed proletariat. However, Smith has conceded that there is an gun violence epidemic and has introduced bills and advocated stricter gun safety regulations and background checks. She is opposed to gun control stating a necessity for guns for safety and protection reasons, though a sound minded public and better gun handling and safety training is needed to ensure the stabilization and reduction of gun accidents and violence. While not a gun owner herself, Smith has expressed interest in owning assault weapons and collecting antique rifles which has been the source of criticism by friends and others.

Net Neutrality

Smith 2019 Political Compass.png

An outspoken and controversial critic of American policy, Smith was a staunch supporter of the Occupy Movement and the Anonymous Collective and stands in defense of WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, NSA contractor Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning. She authored the Manning-Assange Freedom of Information Act (MAFIA) as a member in the Oasis Islands Senate and has authored a similar set of bills that were passed in Shaoshan ensuring citizens' protection from their government and from outside forces. Smith has been openly critical of the NSA spying and openly condemns it and any and all surveillance of American citizens by the US government. In addition, she is a strong advocate for open government and government transparency and has been a heavy opponent to attempts by world governments and organizations to censor the Internet through means of ACTA, SOPA, PIPA, and CISPA. As such, she is a strong advocate of net neutrality and vowed to protect it. Smith's views towards macronational powers, like the United States, has been described as open defiance of macronational oversight, with the passage of a bill that openly stated that any abuses committed against her citizens by the US or other foreign powers would be considered an act of aggression if not a wonton act of war.

California Nationalism and Independence Movements

A proud Californian who was born in the Napa Valley and a proponent of independence movements, Smith has advocated for Californian and Texan separation from the United States, stating they should be regarded as nationalities with a sovereign right to self-determination. In November 2015, Smith took a more active role outside micronationalism as a member of a California independence movement openly supporting California and Texas nationalist movements, joining the California National Party, a big tent organization committed to California devolution, sovereignty, preservation and independence. She also believes in Scottish independence from the United Kingdom as well as Wales, Cornwall, Northumbria, and Isle of Man. In addition, Smith also has said that she supports Catalonian independence from Spain and united Ireland. An opponent of monarchism, Smith has often been vocal towards her support for British republicanism. In 2017, she openly denounced Spain as "fascist" while recognizing Catalan independence and Carles Puigdemont as its legitimate President. She similarly denounced the United States and its President Donald Trump in the same fashion while declaring California to be a free, sovereign and independent nation, often referring to Governors Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom as "President of the California Republic". Smith recognizes and supports the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic.

Anti-Corporate Activism

Smith opposes Corporatocracy and monopoly and has openly criticized corporations over their influence on government and has openly criticized banks and denounced the United States Federal Reserve and the International Monetary Fund as a "pyramid scheme designed to make the rich richer and the poor more impoverished." Smith believes in the abolition of the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Reserve in favor of a independent, non-bureaucratic, non-profit, worker-owned enterprise responsible for a single-payer tax system in order to pay for goods and services. She also believes in arresting corrupt bankers and investment in a central credit union or State Bank, withdrawal from the International Monetary Fund, hardline enforcement of anti-trust laws through de-monopolization and de-corporatization, and more press freedom.

Religious views

Smith has always rejected the idea of organized religion and despises religious extremism of all kinds. She has openly viewed Westboro Baptist Church and other ultra-conservative religions as terrorist organizations and extremely dangerous. In the same respect, Smith has also said that she is opposed to anti-theists as well calling them "arrogant and self-centered human beings" and has determined them to be "extremists of the non-religious and non-believers." Having struggled with what she called a "religious identity crisis" during her youth, she never held a true belief in any deified being. Growing up in an agnostic, yet non-religious family, she has always remained skeptical of the idea of a "higher power". Having once identified as an atheist, she says that she respects all beliefs is often receptive to learning about the religious views of her friends and colleagues. After studying Paganism and Wicca in its many unique forms for nearly a year, Smith decided to convert to on October 29, 2014. Smith credits her conversion to a spiritual vision that she received through meditation and dreams. Smith identifies as a ecclectic witch who follows both Celtic and Norse pantheons.

Personal life

Smith identifies as pansexual, having come out in 2015. In September 2019, Smith came out as transgender. In September 2020, Smith came out as aromantic. Smith states that her sexuality and her lack of romantic attraction are neither the same nor exclusive and that she sees beuaty in everyone.

Smith has had a few relationships over the years but none were ever serious. She began a romantic involvement with Amy Augusta in July 2016, who is 5 years her junior, which grew more prolific over the course of several months. Augusta and Smith married in a private Pagan ceremony in August 2017. She also held a high level position in her many political parties as well as her government. The two separated in July 2020 and became divorced in Cascadia by September and making it legal in January 2021. The two still reside in the Cascadian capital, Tíotáineabaille, with Augusta's dog, Charlie. Amy Augusta was founder and General Secretary of the Cascadian Feminist Workers Union before resigning from the leadership in November 2020.

Smith has a sister whom is 22 years her junior (born September 23, 2013). Due to current privacy laws, her real name is hidden and is known by her psuedo-name, Juno Smith, who lives with the Smiths in New Reno. Smith's great-grandmother, who also resides in New Reno, is the Head of the House of Percy of North America and, at 94 years old, is the long-reigning matriarch of the Smith family, having headed the family since 1994.

Smith suffers from Attention deficit disorder, Aspergers syndrome, chronic depression and anxiety disorder and historically had been in opposition to and refused to personally take prescription medication other than aspirin due to her belief that Big Pharma is "exploiting and profiting off people's conditions". She long treated her disabilities with holistic remedies, as well as cannabis. Today, her treatment for her disorders are cannabis, which she states is a much better alternative, however, she does take medication as well but remains anti-capitalistic about the pharmaceutical industry. Smith is also diagnosed with gender dysphoria and currently is treated with hormone therapy medication. On April 7th, 2021, Smith began facial electrolysis.

Smith possesses a wide array of knowledge and spends much of her spare time researching current events, politics, and science. She has a wide amount of knowledge in history, geography, government and politics, and a fair amount of knowledge in biology and can often be found giving lectures throughout Cascadia.

Quotes

  • I'm not going to sugarcoat anything. I'm always going to tell you flat out how I feel. If you don't like it, that's fine. We are all entitled to our own opinions.
  • Corporations are nothing more than an evil monopoly. They corrupt power, ruin democracies, and add to the inequality of society.
  • In the past decade, we have seen a nation of surplus, business, and great democracy and influence become one of the most corrupt and broken political and economic systems in the western world. We have gone from a nation of immense freedom to a corporatacratic police state.
    ~on America's current condition
  • The democracy of America has devolved to nothing more than a two-party dictatorship over the people ruled by a group of oligarchic, corporate elitists...when the government begins infringing on the people’s freedom, freedom is lost. Democracy is corrupted. And all that remains are its shattered remains, darkened by the shadows of tyrannical power. ~On the corruption of democracy.
  • California overthrew their Mexican rulers and then their revolution was turned against them by their own traitorous leaders, who submitted to the US imperialists. ~on the issue of California Independence.
  • We need guns for protection, not just for home defense, but from defense against those who wish to take our civil liberties away. Do we need to change how we look at guns? Sure. However, Do we need to outlaw guns? Hell. No. What we need is gun SAFETY, not gun control.
  • LGBT Rights are not just a civil and constitutional matter, they are a human rights matter. To deny LGBT their equality is to deny them their human rights. And that's not right!
  • Locking people up because they are an addict makes as much since as printing money to save a struggling economy. Its just going to exacerbate that situation. Portugal has decriminalized drugs and things have actually had a positive turn because they treat it as a public health concern, not a criminal matter. The opposite of what America does.
  • The US Government has for years been violating the very values of said Constitution by spying on US citizens through wiretaps, online monitoring, and mass surveillance, something eerily reminiscent of ’1984′.
  • [We], the People of the United States....that in order to form a more perfect Union, we are standing with PFC Bradley Manning and all other whistleblowers and request that they be pardoned from wrong-doing or that US government politicians and workers resign from their positions effective immediately.
  • I no longer call myself "pro-feminist" or "feminist". I don't like that term. Its a redundant label. I am a revolutionary socialist, a Marxist, a godless communist, a pinko; whatever it is you wish to call me. The whole point of Marxism is to attain equality of all walks of humanity, where race and gender, ethnicity and nationality, sexual orientation and religion do not matter. We all work together for a better way of life and to benefit ourselves, our society, instead of benefiting an exploitative person in a suit who's only means is profit. Women are our equal and as such are and will always be our equal. Their struggle must be the struggle of their male comrades. Without this comradery, revolution cannot be attained or achieved. We must stand together, united, and steadfast as equals against the bourgeoisie to tear it down and establish a new society from the ruins of the old. True feminism, rather the idea of gender equality, can only be achieved through the ending of the exploitation, the overthrow of the capitalist order, the statist system, the ruling class. Only then can equality be achieved. That is feminism, that is revolutionary. It is because of that why I consider myself revolutionary rather than feminist because gender equality is already ingrained within the revolutionary ideal.
  • In a choice between religious fundamentalists and anti-theists, the anti-theists seem to be the most arrogant and self-centered human beings I've come across. I probably despise them more than religious fundamentalism. They are the extremists of the non-religious and non-believers and the dangerous part is they are usually well educated and logical folks. However, as a person who does not believe in God, given the choice of defending a fundamentalist or an anti-theists, I'd probably defend the fundamentalist.
  • It is our job to be the bastions of freedom for those who may be to afraid to speak out...against any and all governments and organizations that continue to oppose progress and the rights of human beings. We encourage those to speak up for them, under penalty of law, arrest, or life, to defend human rights wherever we see fit and encourage others to come forward and be proud, be brave, and to throw off the age old chains of the oppressor. It is through mobilizing in unity and solidarity can we throw off the chains of reactionary fascism, fundamentalism, imperialism and the theocratic bourgeois that presses its hegemonic boot against the throats of our human beings. ~On LGBT Rights, freedom of speech, and religious freedom
  • A religious majority cannot continue to use its rule to oppress the minority rights of a community. The reactionary idea that Christianity deserves a pass and a free ride to discriminate against sexual and religious minorities, anywhere in the world, micronational or macronational, is a primitive concept and goes against the ideals of humanity or a progressive society. I prefer to go with progress. ~On the Christian "Religious Freedom Restoration" movement
