Foreign affairs of Theodia

This article is a description of Theodia's foreign affairs. It contains information about its history and related policies, as well as chronological tables of Theodia's foreign relations and memberships in intermicronational organizations.

Foreign affairs

History

Theodia, before it ratified its original constitution, generally did not actively seek membership in micronational organizations or recognition from other micronations (although it did occasionally remark on various happenings, and it did co-found the Runic Union). During the Theodian Dark Age and somewhat into the Golden Era, the country avoided relations with other countries. Mid-2011, Theodia opened itself up and joined the OAM, and later cessioned Underwoodia. Interest in foreign affairs declined by the end of 2011, and for much of 2012, was nearly non-existent. Post-voiding of the constitution, Theodia became much more-active in diplomacy, due to the new ministry of foreign affairs and its founder, Axel Nielson. However, this was not to last, as Axel passed away in late 2012. Theodia was diplomatically distant from then until early 2014 when it ascended to the GUM as a provisional member. However, it did not have the resources needed for to maintain a membership therein and left later that year, thence remaining generally aloof on the intermicronational scene, with the notable exceptions of June 2017 and 2019, when the country sent delegations to MicroCons 2017 and 2019. Theodia returned to intermicronational politics in 2020 with a new minister of foreign affairs, Skerdsala.

Policies

Recognition

Theodia automatically recognizes any entity which maintains full membership in the UN, the UNPO, and/or the GUM. Additionally, when Theodia 'recognizes' an entity, it specifically de jure recognizes: (1) the legitimacy of its rule over its de facto domiciles, (2) its sovereignty over any territories over which it has de facto control, and (3) its independence from any other state-like internationalism which Theodia recognizes. Additionally, Theodia has no problem de jure recognizing conflicting claims made by multiple actors over the same territories.

Derecognition in Theodia functions somewhat uniquely: a nation automatically becomes derecognized upon becoming defunct or disbanding, with the date of derecognition being the date that the nation is considered to meet any of these conditions. Often, the exact date is unknown, so an estimate is made. If an automatically derecognized country no longer meets the conditions for automatic derecognition, then recognition is automatically resumed. Additionally, in the event that an explicitly recognized nation transitions in-place into another nation (for example, the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation), Theodia's recognition of the original nation is transferred to the nation's new form.

Other

Theodian foreign policy generally follows the paradigm of Realpolitik. Theodia avoids concerning itself with other nations' domestic policies, where those policies do not directly affect Theodia via an externality or some other means, as Theodia respects the traditional sovereignty of the state and understands the cultural relativity of morality, and expects the same respect from others. Even given this paradigm, though, the country is predisposed to positive relations with other pragmatist nations. Additionally, although Theodia is generally hesitant to provide international aid to developing countries where doing so would not benefit Theodia, it does seek to minimize any negative externalities its policies may have on other nations, generally trying to follow a policy of peaceful coexistence. Regardless, although Theodia considers itself at peace by default and generally prefers peaceful relations, it still reserves the right to declare limited wars of conquest against lesser nations. Likewise, Theodia considers itself open to trade by default, but reserves the right to embargo.

Treaties

There are many possible clauses that can be added onto treaties. Any page expressing each one in detail would be unwieldy, so here the most common ones have been simplified and displayed in a chart. Where possible, the individual treaties are linked-to in the form of references (although not all references below are links to treaties). Sometimes, diplomatic actions have been done without a formal treaty, such as with simple acts of mutual recognition. Similarly, especially in Theodia's early days, most diplomacy was done via emails rather than via treaties. These will not be linked to, as they are not traditional treaties, or even necessarily available. Thankfully, the majority of them were just simple guarantees of recognition and peace, and accordingly, fit neatly into the said chart.

The following chart is divided into two columns, each of which is sorted in descending chronological order: the first by date of recognition, and the second by date of derecognition. Entries with matching dates are sorted in ascending alphabetical order. Sometimes an exact date is unknown; in these cases, an approximate date is given. If a nation was recognized and/or derecognized several times, those dates are placed into a single entry. Nations are also grouped together with their successor states. A superscript 'M' after a recognition date indicates that the micronation in question agreed to mutual recognition with Theodia on that date. A superscript 'H' indicates honorary recognition, ie of a nation that no longer exists; and a superscript 'C' indicates a continuation of recognition from some previous date or a transfer of recognition from some precursor entity. A superscript 'A' after a derecognition date means the micronation was automatically derecognized due to disfunction.

Please realize that the chart only keeps track of relations unilaterally from a Theodian perspective (ie, the chart only considers whether Theodia recognizes a nation; it pays no heed to whether a foreign micronation currently recognizes Theodia).

Recognition dates are displayed in green, and derecognition dates are displayed in magenta; this makes the table accessible to nearly all colour-blind people.
