Taedong, officially the Self Declared DPRK Enclave of Taedong (Korean: 태동의 자기 선언 된 북한 영토 / Dutch: de Zelfverklaarde DPRK Enclave Taedong) is a self declared and autonomous North Korean enclave within the borders of the Netherlands. It acts as it's own municipality, making it the smallest municipality of the DPRK and the first North Korean municipality in Western Europe. The micronation is 15x9 meters in size and has 2 residents, with as leader the 25 year old founder Youri Koeman, Enclave Leader (read: mayor) of Taedong and formerly head of state of the now no longer existing micronations of North Dutch Korea and the Blue Star Islands. Head of state of Taedong is Marshall Kim Jong-un.

The Taedong enclave was founded on April 29, 2019 by the then 23 year old Youri Koeman. From 20 to 23, he was head of state of the no longer existing micronations of North Dutch Korea (2016 - 2018) and the Blue Star Islands (2018 - 2018). Koeman discovered the term micronationalism at the age of 19, while browsing YouTube. There he found videos of the Republic of Molossia, the Realm of Calsahara and the Grand Duchy of Flandrensis. He saw how people took a piece of land and declared it independent.

In the beginning, Koeman liked the idea, but saw nothing to do it himself. Until he made the choice at the age of 20 to give it a shot. The apartment where he lived was declared independent and was given the name North Dutch Korea. This micronation was a parody of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, a country that Koeman is still a big supporter of today. When his friends asked if they could participate in the North Dutch Korea project, Koeman thought his apartment was too small for a 4-men country. So he declared a piece of forest within walking distance from his home the new territory of North Dutch Korea. The apartment where Koeman lived was turned into the Northern Dutch Korean embassy in the Netherlands. In 2018, the micronation fell into oblivion with the citizens and North Dutch Korea ceased to exist.

Koeman had the idea to create a new micronation, with a different territory and a different name. He discovered 4 small islands off the northern coast Antarctica and declared them independent. The name of these islands would be the Blue Star Islands. However, this micronation did not last long. After six months, the micronation was stopped again.

Koeman was 23 years old when he was thinking about another new micronation. This time it should not be a country of its own, but a part of an already existing country. Then, on April 29, 2019, he decided to name his apartment the Unofficial DPRK Enclave of Kim Dong, thinking he could be part of his favorite country, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. 2 weeks after the foundation of Kim Dong, the name was changed to The Unofficial DPRK Enlave of Taedong, named after the Taedong River that flows through the North Korean capital Pyongyang. The word Unofficial was also changed a week after the name change. The micronation would continue as the Self Declared DPRK Enclave of Taedong, or simply Taedong. Koeman decided to exchange his Dutch nationality for the North Korean, bought a DPRK flag and started the Taedong Youtube channel.

Taedong uses the old flag of North Dutch Korea, showing the DPRK flag, but with the blue in the orange color and the red in the blue color. This flag was designed by Aidan McGrath, a old friend of Koeman, who is the head of state of the Free Socialist State of Paloma.

Taedong is a small micronation. It consists only of an apartment of 13x7 meters and a shed of 2x2 meters, making this territory one of the smallest enclaves in the world. There are plans to move the enclave in the future to a permanent piece of land, since it is not expected that Koeman will live on the current ground for the rest of his life.

Taedong is an Christian micronation. The main religion is Reformed Protestantism, a religion that started after the Protestant reformation in the 16th century by the monk Martin Luther. However, Taedong follows the teachings of John Calvin, who lived from 1509 to 1564. Despite the fact that there are different types of churches within Reformed Protestantism (Hungarian Reformed, Christian Reformed, Liberated, Old Reformed etc.) there is only 1 church in Taedong, simply the Reformed Church of Taedong. Taedong also has its own church, this is a space of 1,5x1 meters where a maximum of 1 person can sit. Because the Taedong Church has only 2 members, it is not able to organize church services itself. Therefore, the space where the church is located is mainly used as a chapel where you can sit, pray, read the Bible and listen to Christian music. The Enclave leader is the head of the Reformed Church of Taedong.

Taedong does not have its own army. It is protected by the Dutch army, this is because Taedong is still de facto part of the Netherlands. Despite the lack of military forces, it has already waged some wars. An example of this is the North Divine war, which lasted from July 20, 2019 to August 23, 2019. Taedong was also at war with the Union of Mountain States from August 25, 2019 to May 23, 2020. This war has been a forgotten war in the last 7 months of the war because no more attention was paid to the conflict. Meanwhile, Mountain States has been replaced by a new micronation called Faltree. This means that Mountain States that Taedong was at war with no longer exists, and so the war between Taedong and Mountain States ended. According to the Enclave Leader, this war has no winner because a peace treaty has never been signed. He'd vowed to continue the war until Mountain States surrendered, but there's no point in going to war if the country you're waging war on no longer exists. And so this war ended without a winner or loser. The Taedong - Mountain States war lasted 9 months, making this conflict the longest war Taedong has ever waged.

The 3rd and so far last war in which Taedong was involved was the Cold War between the European League of Micronations and the Republic of Antrisia. This was a conflict that started on December 31, 2020 and ended on January 3, 2021. The cold war was waged entirely through YouTube and Discord and was won by the ELM.

An important part of Taedong is the Taedong Media Platform (TMP for short). This is an organization founded by the Enclave Leader of Taedong. The TMP owns all media of Taedong. These are Enclave TV (Taedong's only TV station) Taedong Radio (Taedong's only radio station), the Taedong Times (Taedong's only newspaper) and the Taedong Discord server (https://discord.gg/sfXJ5TeHsv). All media is managed and created by the Enclave Leader of Taedong.

The official currency of Taedong is the Euro. Almost all payments are made with this. Because Taedong is part of the DPRK, the North Korean won is the second currency. This is rarely used, but is accepted as a means of payment. In severe financial times, the Chinese yuan is used as an emergency currency. However, this is only when there is really no other option. All payments made by Taedong take place online. There is no point in paying with physical money in Taedong.

  • Taedong is named after the Taedong river, a river that flows through the North Korean capital of Pyongyang.
  • A letter was never sent to the Dutch government about Taedong being a North Korean enclave, therefore it is still de facto Dutch territory.
  • As far as is known, Taedong is the only North Korean enclave in the Netherlands, even it is not official.
  • Besides being a North Korean enclave, Taedong is also an autonomous area. It acts as it's own municipality.
  • In the past, Koeman had plans to apply for the Chinese nationality at the Chinese embassy in The Hague, because he was not proud of his Dutch nationality. However, this never happened.
