The Tardissian Institute, more commonly known as Tardissium and formerly known as New Tarda, is a micronational institution in Scotland. originally founded as a socialist parliamentary monarchy it slowly transitioned into a more Democratic system and on March 25, 2020 officially switched to an anarchist system. However after a period of declining activity it fizzled out of existence in June 2021. It was revived on 25 February 2022 as a micro national institute and on the 29th of March 2022 its independence was reaffirmed by C.T. Rebecca Gallacher, acting on behalf of the institute.

Historically a member of The Association of United Micronations, The Scottish Micronational Alliance and the Micronational Emergence Group, Tardissium is currently a member of the Micronational Conference on Plans to Support Ukraine

History

Tardissium was originally founded on March 28, 2014.

The 'Smelt it Dealt it' Incident and Allegations of Simulationism:

At some point before the first reformation, while Tardissium was still a member of the Association of United Micronations, C.T. Rebecca was brought before a special AUM inquiry into simulationism in order to address allegations which had arisen. These allegations were made based on several aspects of the nation:

  • a law which had stated 'smelt it, dealt it'. this was a very important point.
  • prohibitions on loudness, and on the number 13
  • a small land claim
  • ceremonial citizenships given to animals

During the proceedings Gallacher decided that they were heavily unfair, citing the fact that the proceedings were hidden from her, unfair questions being asked, willful misinterpretation of Gallacher's answers, and the ridiculous examples of evidence used, and so she left the AUM, later rejoining where after filling out her membership application, the AUM decided Tardissium was not simulationist.

The legacy of this incident lasted deep into tardissium's future, being seen by tardissians as an example of what happens when the community becomes too scared of simulationism, despite this interpretation Tardissium later became a part of the anti-simulationist Micronational Emergence Group.

Flag

The institute has no official flag, instead opting for a crest. However it has historically had several flags; The first flag was used in the monarchy period and consists of three 45 degree stripes in the colours of the French flag, with the order changed to avoid confusion. This however gave it an unfortunate resemblance to the Russian flag. This flag is known as the 'Monarchy flag'. The monarchy flag is the basis for most other Tardissian flags.

The second flag is the communist flag which was used following the restructuring in 2020. This flag featured more muted colours and a hammer and sickle in the top left corner. This flag became invocative of the new anarchist system.

The anarchist period also brought about the official seal, which featured a horizontal version of the tardissian flag, a shield in the middle featuring plants, a hammer and sickle above the shield and along the outside was written "March 28, 2018" and "March 25, 2020".

During this period Tardissium's individual communes each had their own flags, usually variations of the tardissian flag. The people's defence also had a flag featuring the seal on a green background.

Principles

The institute is based 4 principles;

1. A commitment to Anarchism as defined by Chomsky as "A radical scepticism about structures of domination, authority and hierarchy throughout human life"

2. A recognition that as humans we must work together to both the greatest and smallest extent possible.

3. An understanding of the sentience, value and importance of all intelligent life.

4. A commitment to communism as defined by Engels as "the doctrine of the conditions of the liberation of the proletariat"[1]

The 4 principles are enshrined by the reaffirmation of independence which says: "With the tardissian principles as our founding ideals we move forward into a new period for Tardissium, reflecting this new period we hereby rescind all previous land claims, or citizenships except for those which are ceremonial, such as the amnesty for all trees on the planet."[2]

Reaffirmation Of Independence

Tardissian Indepence was reaffirmed by C.T. Rebecca Gallacher, acting on behalf of the institute, on 29 March 2022. The Reaffirmation took the form of a document published via twitter known as 'The Reaffirmation Of Independence'. This document should be viewed as the new founding document of Tardissium.

The Document Reads as follows:

"The Tardissian Institute, being the successor state to Tardissium, hereby reaffirms our independence from all national government, we reaffirm all diplomatic ties to our fellow micronations, and we reaffirm our commitment to anarchism.

With the tardissian principles as our founding ideals we move forward into a new period for Tardissium, reflecting this new period we hereby rescind all previous land claims, or citizenships except for those which are ceremonial, such as the amnesty for all trees on the planet.

We declare that we are no longer a nation with land claims, citizens or government but are now a sovereign organisation which gives practical policy proposals for the micronational community, which reflect the tardissian principles.

We are excited for this new step in Tardissian history and are excited to reopen relations with the micronational community. Thank you.

-C.T. Rebecca, On behalf of the Tardissian Institute"

Analysis:

The document makes several key points such as:

  1. "The Tardissian Institute, being the successor state to Tardissium." It is this point that is possibly the most important point to the document, as it provides the foundation for the institutes independence and explains why the document is considered a reaffirmation rather than a declaration. According to this point, a new Declaration of Independence is not necessary for Tardissium as it maintains the right to independence from previous incarnations.
  2. "we reaffirm all diplomatic ties to our fellow micronations" This point can be interpreted as the institute stating it does not need to forge new diplomatic ties or alliances as since it is the successor state to tardisium, all previous diplomacy is maintained.
  3. "With the tardissian principles as our founding ideals we move forward into a new period for Tardissium" This point is important as it enshrines the tardissian principles into law.
  4. "reflecting this new period we hereby rescind all previous land claims, or citizenships except for those which are ceremonial, such as the amnesty for all trees on the planet." this point is important as it sets the institute apart from other Micronations, which have land claims, and it partially explains what is meant by a Micronational institution. It also reaffirms ceremonial citizenships such as The Amnesty For Trees which guarantees citizenship and protection for the planets trees.
  5. "We declare that we are no longer a nation with land claims, citizens or government but are now a sovereign organisation which gives practical policy proposals for the micronational community, which reflect the tardissian principles." This point is important as it declares that Tardissium is no longer a nation but is now a Micronational institution, as well as partially explaining what that means for the institute.
