Supreme Court of Easway
The Supreme Court of Justice of the Easwegian Common Union, abbreivated as SCECU, encompasses the highest court of the self-declared nation's judicial branch. Established by the Thirty Second Amendment on 22 November 2021, the Supreme Court has the ability to interpret the Constitution and legislation and, if violations are evidenced, impeach officers and representatives of the Co-operative Government. The Supreme Court is composed of seven judges, including one Chief Justice and six associate justices; the former composed of the Grand Marshal and the latter composed of two Aldermen and four nominated by Easwegian municipalities; who are confirmed by a majority vote of the Easwegian Common Assembly. The current Chief Justice is Emizerri.

List of Chief Justices
Order | Person | Incumbent | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
- | Emizerri | 22 November 2021 - 14 November 2022 | During this period of the Supreme Court, then referred to as the High Court, the chief of state served as Chancellor of the Court. |
acting | Aleksou Desourrë | 14 November 2022 - 1 March 2023 | The Forty Seventh Amendment, passed on 14 November 2022, reduced the size of the High Court to five members (one neutral Chief Justice and four Commissioners), rescinding the position of Chancellor. Hellmut, then Marquis of Essrina planned to resign following the elections and stand for Chief Justice, though eventually did not stand. With zero other neutral qualified officials willing to stand, this triggered a mini-constitutional crisis. |
1st | Metallityöt | 1 March 2023 - 17 July 2023 | Following the February Emergency whereby Etchaczech, then Commissioner Justice of Essrina, leaked highly classified documents of the Government to the public following a series of secret affairs (see Kingdom - 1925), Etchaczech was impeached by the Assembly and the nation entered into a month-long state of national emergency. It was clear to the Government that a Chief Justice needed to be appointed as soon as possible. Using state emergency powers, the Imperative Council gave addendum to the Forty Seventh Amendment enlarging the Court to seven members (adding the Aldermen) and inspired by the politics of the Vatican, the Assembly speaker was to simultaneously serve as Chief Justice. |
2nd | Oleksiy | 17 July 2023 - 23 August 2023 | It was agreed by the Government and Metalli that the Chief Justice simultaneously serving within the highly political role of Assembly President was too much of a conflict of interest. The Fiftieth Amendment, passed 17 July 2023, passed the role of Chief Justice to the Grand Marshal, inspired by the Marshal of the Court within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. |
3rd | Devaade Raizerni | 23 August 2023 - 25 November 2023 | An attempted assassination against Emizerri, then Grand Councillor, occurred in August 2023, committed by Kingdom - 1925 in response to the anti-terrorist Brush-Off Campaign. Kingdom - 1925, abbreviated as K-25, engaged in physical and doxxing threats against various members of the Government. Because of Oleksiy's Ukrainian heritage exposing himself as a particular target, he decided that to protect himself and loved ones he would resign and leave Easway. Devaade Raizerni succeeded him as an acting Chief Justice and due to the notable period in which he served he is considered the official 3rd holder of the position. Devaade was noted as a staunch conservative legalist and oversaw the conviction of Etch for his role as former leader of K-25 and the subsequent destruction of the organisation through the information Etch provided in his plea bargain. |
4th | Emizerri | Since 25 November 2023 | Emizerri was succeeded as Grand Councillor by Squ Bai and was subsequently elected to serve as Grand Marshal and Chief Justice. |
Notable cases
Proletarian Fishers Committee vs the Co-operative Government (7 August 2023)
A case was filed in July by the Proletarian Fishers Committee (PFC), a progressive advocacy group in Essrina, arguing that the Act on Human Photo Filters and Body Modifications, signed into law 14 November 2020, legalised gender-affirming surgery, commonly known as sex-change surgery. They argued that the law was not being followed because as of then gender-affirming surgery was prohibited within Easway. In a 4-3 verdict, the Supreme Court sided with the PFC and gender-affirming surgery was ruled legal. Those supreme court justices who sided with the PFC included Oleksiy, Demitrou Gaia and Neicou. Those who sided against the PFC included Aleksou, Archiennè and Devaade Raizerni.[1]
