Helveticana, officially the Soviet Socialist Empire of Helveticana, is a political entity that claims to be a sovereign state, but is more accurately classified as a micronation. The nation was first founded on 1 September 2014 by Adam Judge as the State of Meepland, but two reforms, the first being a constitutional amendment changing the name to Helveticana and the second being to adopt a new constitution completely, turned the nation into what it is now. The Empire consists of three provinces and one imperial territory located in southeastern New Hampshire. Helveticana's government consists of a Supreme Soviet with democratically elected representatives, the Emperor and his Cabinet, and the Imperial Court. The current Emperor is HIM Adovich Daviovsky, and the Chancellor is HE Tobias Scott.

History

Founding

On 1 September 2014, Adam Judge founded the State of Meepland as more of a joke with his friends than a serious micronational project. However, on 12 October 2014, a constitutional amendment was passed that changed the title of the nation to the State of Helveticana in an attempt to be taken more seriously.

Pre-Imperial Times

Now being a more serious project, Helveticana saw lots of internal activity. In late October, the state expanded by annexing a larger land area. Throughout late October, other more minor things were done, like the creation of a system for political parties and experimentation with a prototype currency. Overall, the pre-imperial times saw much internal growth, but Helveticana had not yet reached out to diplomacy with other micronations.

Transition to an Empire

Over time, however, it was seen that the constitution was weak and not written very well. Helveticana's citizens also wanted a more powerful nation with socialist ideals. A new constitution was written that would reestablish Helveticana as a socialist empire. It was ratified on 2 January 2015 and the former President of the State of Helveticana became the new Emperor. In the time following the reform, many new laws were created by the Emperor to establish the Empire's internal workings. Helveticana then finally reached out into the MicroWiki community.

Inactivity and Return

The Empire did not get very far in diplomacy, however, before it fell into a long period of inactivity. Months went by and almost nothing happened, until 10 October 2015, when the Emperor officially declared the end of Helveticana's period of inactivity and promised to try to revive the Empire.

Government and Politics

Under the Constitution of the Soviet Socialist Empire of Helveticana, the Empire's government consists of a legislative, executive, and judicial branch.

Legislative Branch

The legislative branch consists of the Supreme Soviet, a council of the people for the creation of laws. The Supreme Soviet consists of one representative elected from each province. The Chancellor of the Empire serves as President of the Supreme Soviet.

Executive Branch

The executive branch consists of the Emperor, the Chancellor, and the Cabinet. The Emperor has limited power to make laws, and he sees that the laws of the Empire are carried out. The Chancellor is appointed by the Emperor with approval of the Supreme Soviet and carries out laws, and can command the Ministries of the Cabinet. Ministries in the Cabinet are created by law and are charged with the execution of the law in certain fields.

Judicial Branch

The judicial branch consists of the Imperial Court, which is headed by a Judge appointed by the Emperor with approval of the Supreme Soviet. The Imperial Court tries all civil and criminal cases.

Climate

A scene of New Hampshire in autumn.

Helveticana, being within the state of New Hampshire, experiences a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold, wet winters, and uniform precipitation all year. Average annual snowfall ranges from 60 inches (150 cm) to over 100 inches (250 cm). In July, average daytime high temperatures are in the mid 70s °F to low 80s °F (around 24–28 °C). January temperatures range from an average high of 34 °F (1 °C) to an overnight low of below 0 °F (-18 °C). Extreme snow is often associated with a nor'easter, and lighter snowfalls of several inches occur frequently throughout winter. New Hampshire, on occasion, is affected by hurricanes and tropical storms although by the time they reach the state they are often extratropical, with most storms striking the southern New England coastline and moving inland or passing by offshore in the Gulf of Maine. Most of New Hampshire averages fewer than 20 days of thunderstorms per year and an average of two tornadoes occur annually statewide.

The most beautiful thing about the region's climate is that in autumn, the leaves of many trees turn to brilliant reds, oranges, browns, and yellows. However, they do tend to pile up in people's yards.
