The Socialist Union of the Wakatipu was a communist micronation spread out across the Wakatipu Basin. It has been succeded by the new state, the Soviet Socialist Union of the Wakatipu

Etymology

The Socialist Union of the Wakatipu is named after lake Wakatipu and the surrounding basin where all territory of the nation resides. It is called a socialist Union because it is a union of socialist states rather than a continuous republic, kingdom or empire.

History

The Socialist Union of the Wakatipu is made up of former territory belonging to members of the Communist party of Frigus. After successfully seceding, the nation quickly went about consolidating its power.

Secession movement in Frigus

The secession movement began long before the trial of future resident Campbell Britton. The republic of Frigus had come under constant scrutiny by the left wing for its increasing reliance on its intelligence service, the H.I.S., which many communist party members believed was the first stage to the establishment of a Fascist police state. The cyber-terrorist "Frigus liberator" was accused of having communist party ties, but this was dis proven. Previously, the communist party attempted to secede, but ultimately failed after a last minute pullout by Campbell Britton. But resentment grew, and the communist party began to formulate the plan for another attempt to break away. When party leader Campbell Britton informed the communist party, an H.I.S. agent revealed this to the Frigus president. He was put on trial for treason

Treason Trial of Campbell Britton

President Hugh Taylor of the Frigus Republic attempted to convict Campbell Britton of treason and prevent the secession. The communist party contained the entire command structure of the Frigus military and also validated Frigus as a republic, because of the fact there were no other opposition parties in the Frigus congress. though convicted, the communist party went ahead and created the Socialist Union at 1:15pm, , granting asylum to the general secretary and forced the Frigus government to drop charges.

Cold war

Frigus and the SUW remain on high tension, but neither have the logistical ability to conduct a war (the SUW lacked soldiers and the Frigus army no longer had an experienced officer corps). Many agree that the SUW would be the one to cause the war, but winning it would be up to debate. Currently the SUW is trying to negotiate with Frigus, but the republic refuses to recognize the communist state.

Branches expedition

In November 2014, the Wakatipu communist party accompanied the year 10 student group into branches camp. The camp lasted 2 days and involved a multitude of outdoor activitiies. The plan for the communist party was t annex the region, but Frigus personnel were also there and prevented full take over, and it became a very tense situation from day 1-3, the tensest it had been since independence. East Branches beome another state within union, and for 12 days was the most active and profitable. On December 9, 2014 the camp ended, but wakatipu claims to east branches remain and the 2015 camp will have to deal with SUW customs.

Government and politics

Communist Party

The government is held firmly by the communist party of the Wakatipu, with the Central committee holding complete power. All communist party members are issued party cards, required for all party events, only party members can hold government positions. The General Secretary of the communist party is head of state. The nation has banned opposition parties but is pssing a resolution for open caucaus' with the general populace, allowing ordinary citizens to have a say in governance.

Military possision

The Military is currently run as the commissariat, a direct branch of the communist party which serves all security and military needs in the interim as the country starts up. Currently the Commissariat is occupying all claimed territory of the SUW, but has not received sufficient military training to be declared ready for combat duty.

Symbol of the commissariat

Unitary states

the socialist Union is not a continuous block of land that abides by Wakatipuan law alone, it is a scattered and fragmented nation that incorporates many distant and close states. Each state is governed by a communist party member who command their own contingent of the party commissariat. these states may have alterations and amendments to national law that better apply to their own state. The SOW ebbassy in New Zealand is located in E3 (WHS, Queenstown) and further infomation of the SOW can be found there.

International Relations

Wakatipu recognizes all member states of the United Nations (Except the Democratic People's Republic of Korea), but is not recognized by any UN member states. The Socialist Union is de facto at war with Frigus, since much of the SUW's territory is claimed by the Republic of Frigus. Wakatipu is currently seekiing out diplomatic relations with various micronations.

Geography and Climate

The Socialist Union of the Wakatipu is located in the alpine resort town of Queenstown. Queenstown is situated on the shore line of Lake Wakatipu, the third largest lake by surface area in New Zealand. It is at a relatively high altitude nestled among mountains, and there are close-by gorges and some plains suitable for agriculture. Despite its relatively high altitude and mountain surroundings, it has an oceanic climate. Summer has long warm days with temperatures that can reach 30 °C while winters are cold with temperatures often in single digits with frequent snowfall, although there is no permanent snow cover during the year. As with the rest of Central Otago, Queenstown lies within the rain shadow of the Southern Alps, but being closer to the west coast the town is more susceptible to rain-bearing fronts compared to nearby Cromwell, Wanaka and Alexandra. The hottest recorded temperature in Queenstown is 34.1 °C (93 °F), while the coldest is −8.4 °C (17 °F).

Economy

The Socialist Union of the Wakatipu has adopted State capitalism as their main policy relating to the economy. The bank, military arms industry and infrastructure like power and transportation is state owned while other, smaller bussiness' may be privately owned. However the government retains tight control on imports and exports which limits many entrepreneurial bussiness oppurtunities.

Demographics

Ethnicity

The nation is made up of mostly New Zealand Europeans (Pakeha) with English, Fijian Hindi and American nationals make up the largest minorities.

English is the only recognized language in Wakatipu, but many citizens speak other languages like Latin, Russian and Hindi.

Religion

Wakatipu strongly encourages state Atheism, but strong elements of Gear list and Hindu make up the religion demographic.
