The River Afton is memorialised in the popular poem "Sweet Afton", written by the 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns. Several townships in the United States were named "Afton" in honour. Afton Water is home to an variety of large rocks and tree branches, as much of the river is surrounded by large wooded forest.
