The Republic of Potomia is a wiki based geofictional "micronation" located on the fictional planet of Mors Prime. More specifically, within the continent of Archia. The nation is currently subdivided into seven provinces(Alandia, Sarchem, Illada, Dodicus, Warenia, Fellen, and Gresodia). The state is also a member of the LSN.
The nation of Potomia was founded in late March of 2019 by micronationalist William Wilson. The state was founded in an attempt to create a new simulationist state that would spearhead the new project, the fictional planet of Mors Prime.
According to national libraries, the earliest known record of "Potomia" to refer to the nation in Archia was in early 1797 when political theorist, Marcus Brutecelli, wrote the Thesis of Pan-Oceandom which speculated that Sarchem, the ancestral state of Potomia, was in the unique ability to unite the city states to the south and north and take control of the central rivers of Archia. Records then explain how the thesis became an integral part of the culture and politics of the city-state of Sarchem. In 1836, the Sarchem gov't signed the first annexation treaty that expanded the state and rang in the beginning of the Potomian Unification Era.
Potomian Unification Era
Potomia, then the state of Sarchem, began a campaign to unify the newly dubbed Potomian Peoples into one state. This political turn was begun with the economic upturn of Sarchem due to increased trade with states down river to the west. This upturn led to the greater influence of merchants in the Sarchemite oligarchy. Several prominent merchants, including former general Samuel Gentullia, led the vote of 1832 which abolished the Sarchem tax restrictions. In 1834 the Sarchem Treasury was reportedly four times bigger than all other states in central Archia combined. In 1835, the Sarchem gov't ordered, now reinstated, General Gentullia to invade the southern neighbor of Sarchem, Illad.
Potomian Unification wars
The campaigns of General Gentullia consisted of five wars and one border conflict. Each of these were won by Sarchem. The following are said conflicts and dates.
- Sarchemite-Illadian War (1835–1837)
- Sarchemite-Dodican War (Jun 1836 - Aug 1836)
- Sarchemite-Alandian War (1836–1837)
- Sarchemite-Warenian War (1837–1840)
- Sarchemite-Fellenese War (1840–1844)
- Nordem River Conflict (7-9 Jul 1845)
After the Nordem River Conflict, the Gresodian gov't offered full annexation of their nation in exchange that their administrative area have full control over the coast and bridges over the Nordem River. The Sarchem National Council agreed and Gresodia was annexed.
Potomian Assimilation Era
The Potomian Assimilation Era was begun shortly after the wars of unification. The defining differences of the times were mainly the passing of laws and the diffusion of cultures in the new lands of Sarchae. This was began by the closing of all borders except for the port of Constantinus and the Mesoma River. During which times no defining events have been recorded to have taken place. This era is accredited to have lasted from 1846 to 1879.
Shortly after the Potomian Assimilation Era, many of the annexed groups began to suffer the effects of an oligarchy where Sarchemite and Gresodian merchants and businessmen had the majority. Though tensions remained at a minimum for many years after the end of the Assimilation Era. In 1891, a tax bill was passed that limited upriver travel from the border. This held a large effect to the northern provinces as Sarchem was at the border and not subject to such taxation and Gresodia was also not subject due to its access to the sea.
In September 1891, Matthew Suprechelli, an Illadan riverboat company owner held a conference in Voltairopolis. After a series of fiery speeches and the gathering a crowd of nearly 7,000 people, Suprechelli called for the removal of the oligarchy and the installation of a popularly elected assembly of representatives from each of the provinces. On 27 September 1891 militia from five of the seven provinces marched on Constantinus and forced the garrison to surrender. After taking weapons and supplies from the garrison the newly dubbed 'Potomian Republican Army' marched on to Voltairopolis. While the army was approaching the city, local police arrested Matthew Suprechelli. Soon, news broke to the approaching army and they were reported to have "...proceeded to not accelerate to double-march, but rather triple-march..." The army soon stood at the gates demanding the release of Suprechelli. The police agreed and proceeded to push the man over the gate tower, breaking his left arm and leg in the fall. Outraged, the army began mining the gate with powder and proceeded to destroy the gate. The army of now 4,000 soldiers surged into the city heading for the Council House. After entering they imprisoned the oligarchs. The army named Suprechelli the Chairman of the Interim Government. Chairman Suprechelli ordered the oligarchs, excepting the son of General Gentulla, a supporter of Suprechelli, to resign their positions and return to their homes. By June 1892, the first republican elections took place within Potomia.
Not many notable events occurred after the events of the Republican Revolution. During this time, Potomia had a high economic upturn, becoming the largest trade nation in the world. During the War of Absolutism, Potomia declared a complete blockade of the Vossk Empire and a ship lese program to the Empire of Ardelia later in the war. This ship lease program is considered one of the contributing factors into the failure of the Vossk Invasion of Ardelia. After the war, Potomia remained neutrual or economically supportive of one side in all following conflicts. In 1962, Potomia and the nations of the continent Asphaltyaer signed a Mutual Shipping Pact promising the protection of their counterpart ships from pirates or enemy navies.
The current government of Potomia is a Democratic Republic where, through a quadrennial popular election, each province elects two senators to represent them in the Potomian Senate. In the Senate the elected representatives, from amongst themselves, elect a Prometeor. The Prometeor is similar to a Prime Minister. After election, the Prometeor can choose to keep the current leader of military forces, the Bellonor, or appoint a new commander of the Potomian Armed Forces.
Previous to the Republican Revolution, an oligarchy called the Potomian Council served as the government of Potomia. This Council was made up of the top fifteen most prominent businessmen on Potomia. Every five years a materiel wealth census would be taken to find the most wealthy men in Potomia. Usually when one such council member died, his son would inherit his wealth and, in turn, become a council member himself. This system, while efficient for keeping the treasury full, put a hard strain on the working people of Potomia.
The Potomian Senate was the second and current government in Potomia. The Senate comprises of 14 Senators with one being the Prometeor and the Bellonor holding a seat. The Senate seats are currently held by three main parties (shown left). These parties are the Meritocrats, Congregatonists, and the Brutecrats.
The Meriticratic Party is based off of the ideology of Progressive Meritocracy, where those best served to fit to improve the people and nation of Potomia should be elected to positions of importance. The party currently holds a plurality in the Senate.
The Congregationalist Party is based off of Conservative Distubutism, where necessary commodities stockpiled in excess are to be equally distributed amongst the people. The party is currently in minority in the Senate.
The Brutecratic Party is based in the Thesis of Pan-Oceandom, and is considered to be a Potomian Nationalist Party. The party bases its actions from the original writings of Marcus Brutecelli, primary for increased expansion and militarism. The party currently is in minority in the Senate.
