The Republic of Drew Star Line (previously known as the Starland Republic, and often referred to as DSL) is a new nation project that claims the geological feature Le Doon Kinimi in the Tibesti Mountains of Chad. Although its land claims in Africa have yet to be settled by its citizens, DSL does maintain a substantial amount of control over unclaimed territories in the state of North Carolina, United States. DSL was founded by six individuals, who are known collectively as the Old Dogs, on 13 September 2005.

Etymology

The Republic of Drew Star Line (DSL) is the 15th recognized incarnation of what is often called the Drew Star Line Legacy, or simply the Legacy. DSL's unique name is derived from its origins as a proposed space launch vehicle manufacturer, Andrew's Starliner Company, founded by Violette Clingersmith (born as Andrew Clingersmith). When Clingersmith and several of her friends reconfigured the purpose of the company in mid-September 2005, the name was slightly modified due to fears that an acronym of ASC or ASL may have been viewed as a double entendre. The name of the micronation has since changed multiple times over the course of its history in a series of three defined phases of activity, which were separated by periods of inactivity. These phases are known, in order, as DSL-Starland, San Dover, and DNS-Kermadecia. The various entities and their respective phases are presented in the table below. It should be noted that the New Pamlico Federation, the Republic of Starland, and Hiraeth are independent of the main sphere, but are included in the table for succinctness.

The citizens of DSL are often referred to as Starliners or Dogs. The latter term derives from a small yet significant struggle for dominance between the six founders and the rest of the populace in late 2007, in which a pseudo-military called "Drew's Hell Dogs" was raised by the founders. Citizens are further classified as either being Old Dogs or New Dogs, depending on what phase of the micronation they joined. Old Dogs were typically given more rights than other citizens, and could be viewed as the nobility of the country. However, this caste system is slowly being eradicated. Starliners are also unique for predominately referring to their micronation as a project or a club, and despite claiming sovereignty, they rarely refer to themselves as micronationalists or being apart of a micronation.

History

Formation and Early History: Sep 2005 to Sep 2006

The six founders of DSL, from left to right. TOP: Diego Bell, Violette Clingersmith, Caleb Flaville. BOTTOM: Jericho Gilmore, Tegan Paris, Justin Zeller

The Republic of Drew Star Line (DSL) traces its origins to a space launch company proposed by Andrew (later Violette) Clingersmith in early September 2005, known as Andrew's Starliner Company. The original concept was to create zeppelin-like space shuttles that could be launched into orbit from a magnetized rail, and vertically land at another point following reentry by utilizing helium filled tanks to decrease the craft's density. This idea was quickly abandoned by the then nine-year-old Clingersmith, mainly due to growing disinterest from its creator.

DSL was reformed a few days later as a club by Clingersmith and five of her friends: Diego Bell, Caleb Flaville, Jericho Gilmore, Tegan Paris, and Justin Zeller. The six of them met after school in the gymnasium of Roger R. Bell Elementary in Havelock, North Carolina, and formulated a small charter outlining the club's leadership, policies and goals. The original purpose as stated in DSL's charter was to create a small town in the United States for the close-knit group of friends to reside in, and as such this early period of the project's history is more akin to a club than a micronation. It was in this meeting that the name Andrew's Starliner Company was slightly modified to Drew Star Line, following fears that an acronym of ASC or ASL may have been mispronounced as an elicit word. The founding date is maintained as Tuesday, 13 September 2005, although the exact date was never actually transcribed, and could be any day between 12 and 16 September. 13 September was chosen during preparations for the club's one-year anniversary in September 2006 by then President Zeller because he was "pretty sure it {the founding} happened on a Tuesday."

A President-Vice President system was set up among the six founders during the meeting, and they chose Bell for President, and Clingersmith for Vice President. Their inauguration is maintained as having occurred on 15 September 2005, but as the only record for the event was listed as "two {school} days following DSL's founding," this date could actually be anywhere between 14 and 20 September. Bell and Clingersmith were each to serve a one-year term, ending on 1 September 2006. However, Bell's family moved halfway through his term, so on 1 March 2006, Clingersmith inherited the Presidency for what would be the first of her 16 terms. Bell's leaving would set a new policy of six-month terms, beginning and ending on every 1 March and 1 September.

Both Bell and Clingersmith presided over a calm period of steady growth. Membership had expanded from just six to 27 in just ten months, and it was during their tenures that a sense of national identity was being born. The national colors of green, orange and yellow were first unfurled on the DSL flag, the palette having been inspired by one of Clingersmith's favorite dishes: pasta salad. DSL had also made its first transition from a club to a micronation, by claiming the playground equipment at Roger R. Bell Elementary. However, there was growing discontent among the club's members. During this time, only the six founders could make laws or run for executive office, policies that were becoming increasingly unpopular by the end of Clingersmith's first term in September 2006.

Government

President Violette Clingersmith
Vice President Diego Bell

Drew Star Line (DSL) is a republic, and is led by a President who serves as the head of state. The current President is Violette Clingersmith, who was sworn in on 4 December 2016 to a 2-year term, her 15th consecutive term since originally taking office on 1 March 2007. Clingersmith has stated that this will be her last term as President. The President's main responsibility is to promote DSL's interests at home and abroad, and is therefor the chief diplomat and the leader of the armed forces in times of war. To complete these tasks the President has an advisory committee, currently composed of three positions: Secretary of State (Rose Griffin), Secretary of War (Caleb Flaville), and Secretary of Internal Affairs (Tegan Paris). The President is also assisted by the head of government, the Vice President, who will succeed the President in the event of death, impeachment or retirement. The current Vice President is Diego Bell, who was sworn in on 3 March 2017, following the impeachment of Jericho Gilmore, and will serve the remainder of Gilmore's 2-year term. Clingersmith and Bell's terms are slated to end on 1 January 2019.

The legislative body of DSL is the National Council, and contains 8 seats, 2 Councilors for each of the 4 Districts, who are elected to 2-year terms and are overseen by the Vice President. The main responsibility of the National Council is to create bills in DSL. Any citizen of DSL can propose legislation, but only the National Council can vote on such a proposal becoming a bill. If the National Council approves a proposal and thus creates a bill, done so with a 1:2 vote, the bill then goes to the President for their approval. If the President approves a bill, it will then become an official DSL law. However, the President has the power to veto a bill, in which case the National Council will need a 3:4 vote to overturn. The Vice President is responsible for breaking any tied vote in the National Council.

All national elections begin on 5 November of every even numbered year, and end on 2 December of the same year. The election for President and Vice President is as follows: All citizens above the age of sixteen are put on the ballot, all of whom are also required to vote in the election; The 2 citizens with the greatest number of votes at the end of the election become President and Vice President respectively. The same process is also used to elect representatives to the National Council, except that only illegible citizens from their respective Districts are on the ballot. If a person is elected into an office that they do not wish to serve in they are allowed to step down, or if a person currently in office dies, retires or is impeached, then the person with the next highest number of votes assumes that office.

DSL's capital city has been determined to be located in Sunshine Valley, a steep-sloped gully bordered to the North by the Moumoukai Range, to the West by the Prospect Range, to the South by the Mahoe Range, and to the East by South Bay. The area was chosen for its seclusion and easy access to the sea. It lies at the fork of 2 unnamed freshwater creeks and is in a heavily forested section of the island. The capital city is awaiting a National Council measure to be given an official name.

Below is a list of Presidents/leaders and Vice Presidents/second-in-commands of the main branch of the DSL Legacy (numbered), as well as the leaders of New Pamlico (NP), Republic of Starland (RS), and Hiraeth (HI).

Administrative divisions

Kermadecia is divided into twelve internal divisions, known as Districts. Each District has its own Council made up of citizens from that District. These District Councils contain all citizens over the age of sixteen who reside in that District, and are responsible for hearing criminal and civil court cases. Additionally each District is headed by a Governor, elected in the same fashion as the President, and is responsible for overseeing their respective District Councils. Each District also has an official flag and a capital city.

A housing plan was established on 29 March 2016 (5 April 12016), giving each citizen a claim to 1 hectare (2.5 acres) of land in one of the eleven Districts. The first to claim land in a District was given the opportunity to design the said District's permanent flag, could name their claim, and additionally any bordering claims from other citizens would become a part of the original claimant's settlement.

Foreign relations

Flag of the Kermadec Union.

Kermadecia is an isolationist micronation, refusing to partake in any formal or informal diplomatic movements outside of the Kermadec Union, the exception being New Zealand. New Zealand has laid claim to Raoul Island since 1886 (11886), and it is currently their northernmost held possession. Although Kermadecia disputes New Zealand's claim, they will allow the DOC worker facility to remain operational and under New Zealand jurisdiction.

Clingersmith proposed an alliance between the Rose Commune on 20 March 2016 (6 April 12016). She offered Macauley Island to President Weston Hart in an attempt to protect Kermadecia's southern flank from possible New Zealand retaliation. This "Kermadec Alliance" was dissolved following the Grand Council's decision to annex all of the Kermadec Islands, including Macauley, to make way for Project Red Lightning's (PRL) planned spaceports on 10 April (17 April). However, after a PRL review board in early June (mid-June) determined that they no longer needed the southern Kermadec Islands, she offered them to like-minded "micro-to-macronationalists" within the community. On 14 July (27 Sol) ( five nations, including Kermadecia, formed a military, diplomatic and economic alliance known as the Kermadec Union (KU). The Southern Kermadec Islands thus became a part of the KU's Insurance Policy, a place where member micronations can relocate to if they are forced from their homeland. Kermadecia was the first nation to sign the KU's charter on 14 September (5 September), and are allotted three diplomats to the the KU. The current Kermadecian diplomats are Violette Clingersmith, Jericho Gilmore and Caleb Flaville.

Military and law enforcement

Kermadecia does not have any military or police force, although the constitution does provide for one under the leadership of the President and one is planned to be formed within the next two years. Its lack of any formal military was because the country did not have the resources or funding to develop one at the time, and also because if was felt that there was no need for any kind of armed forces during the pre-settlement stage. However, commitments to create a navy for the Kermadec Union and the need to protect the micronation from New Zealand retaliation have forced Clingersmith's hand into creating a military force. The Secretary of War, Caleb Flaville, has been tasked with creating Kermadecia's armed forces. No such plans for creating a police force have been proposed.

National symbols

Kermadecia's national bird and animal is the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae), a species native only to Kermadec Islands. A mostly bright green bird with blue highlights and a red crown, the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet was hunted to extinction on the Kermadecs by loose domesticated cats. For 172 years the surviving Parakeets lived exclusively in Hiraeth, until finally returning naturally to Raoul Island in 2008 (12008). They have yet to return to the rest of the Kermadec Islands, however.

Kermadecia's national flag from 29 July to 29 November 2015 (14 July to 25 November 12016

Kermadecia's flag replaced an old one created in 2005 (12005) that was used by both DSL-Starland and San Dover. A slight variation of the old flag was in use until the new one replaced it on 29 July 2015 (14 July 12015), which was itself replaced exactly four months later. The national colors green, orange and yellow have been used in nearly all of the Drew Star Line Legacy's flags, and were originally chosen because they are Clingersmith's favorite colors. The green triangle represents Raoul Island (although not necessarily the island's shape, which is anvil-like). The three stars represent Kermadecia and the two previous micronations that it is built upon, DSL-Starland and San Dover.

Kermadecia's national anthem is a lyric-less song called the "Legacy March." It was composed by music director Josh Mancell for the 2004 (12004) video game Jak 3. It was chosen because of the cultural influence the game has had on the Drew Star Line Legacy.

The national seal is another Kermadecian symbol influenced by the Jak and Daxter video game series. It is known within the game world as the Seal of the House of Mar, a royal lineage and a recurring motif throughout the series. In real life it is a complex interpretation of the Maori life symbol, Koru. It is for these two reasons, both cultural and historical, that this symbol was chosen as Kermadecia's national seal. It also contains the colors of the Drew Star Line Legacy: green, orange and yellow.

Economy

One of Kermadecia's picturesque beaches.
Kermadecia lacks an economic base, due to the fact that the micronation's claimed lands have yet to be settled. The island does abound in fish, tropical lumber, and volcanic glass, which will likely be harvested to form a small export economy. Kermadecia also has several large, picturesque beaches and could support a substantial tourist industry. Clingersmith stresses the need for the island to be entirely self-sufficient from the outside world, due to the fact that the first settlers will be cut off from the outside world for an indeterminable amount of time.

Kermadecia does have a determined currency. Called the Kermadec Dollar (Kollar), it is the official currency of the Kermadec Union (KU). It will be a series of weighted coins, ranging from 0.01 Kollars to 100 Kollars, and well be made of a 90% silver base with a 10% gold inlaid. Each member state within the KU will have its own unique set of Kollar coins that will reflect that nation's history and culture. The current currency is not yet in mint, although preliminary designs are being put forward. Paper credits are slated to be issued sometime in 2017 (12017) and will begin to be replaced by the coinage in increments starting in 2025 (12025).

Kermadecia claims Raoul Island, a volcanic island located in the South Pacific, and is part of the Kermadec Island chain. Raoul Island is a heavily forested tropical island that is surrounded by dozens of small islets, all of which are claimed by Kermadecia. Kermadecia also maintains the rest of the Kermadec Islands for the Kermadec Union. The total land area of Raoul Island and its offshore islets is 29.38 km² (10.83 mi²).

Raoul Island is anvil shaped, and is home to five principle mountain ranges and three volcanoes. The highest point on the island is Mt. Moumoukai at 516 m (1693 ft), and it overlooks Raoul Island's central volcanic crater. The crater houses two flooded calderas, called Green Lake and Blue Lake. Both are active volcanoes, the last eruption occurring from Green Lake on 17 March 2006 (20 March 12006), which was responsible for one death and the evacuation of all New Zealand DOC workers from the island. The area of forest around the two calderas is known as Devastation Ridge.

The third volcano is Denham Caldera, located on the eastern side of the island. It is believed to have destroyed over half of Raoul Island in around 200 BCE (c. 8000). The explosion flooded the caldera and in so doing created Denham Bay, the largest bay on the island. The undersea volcano continues to erupt today, although without as much strength. Several of the islets off the eastern coast were also created by volcanic vents associated with the larger calderas.

The island has about one to two major (7.0 magnitude or higher) earthquakes a year, although can go for a short number of years without one. Minor earthquakes happen on an almost daily basis.

Raoul Island has three lakes. Blue and Green lakes are 117 ha (289 ac) and 16 ha (40 ac) respectively. Both are highly acidic, although Blue Lake is less so than Green, being able to support coral reefs but not fish. Blue Lake is up to 67 m (220 ft) deep, while Green Lake is up to 95 m (312 ft) deep. The third lake is called Tui, and at 0.5 ha (1 ac) contains drinkable freshwater, as well as at least two species of fish not known to exist anywhere else in the world. These fish have yet to be scientifically cataloged, however. The island also contains three freshwater springs and dozens of small, unnamed freshwater streams.

Raoul Island has eighty islets surrounding it, most of which are to the East and south of the main island, and collectively they contain less than 2% of Kermadecia's claimed territory. The largest of the islets are the Meyer Islands, a steep sloped islet that rises up to 100 m (328 ft) above sea level. Meyer has subsequently fractured into forty-one pieces due to shore erosion, the largest of which is known as Starland Island and is 0.10 km² (0.04 mi²). Other Eastern islets include Nugent Island (Kermadecia's northernmost claim), Napier Island, Dayrell Island, Egeria Rock, and the Chanter Islands. The South Bay contains the Milne Islets and Dougall Rocks, which are both large coral reefs exposed to the air. Islets will occasionally form in and around Denham Bay, but they do not last more than a few decades before being eroded by the strong surf.

Kermadecia is tasked with maintaining the other four major islands of the Kermadecs for the Kermadec Union's usage. They are, from north to south: Macauley, Cheeseman, Curtis and l'Esperance, and together have a total area of 3.34 km² (1.29 mi²). These steeped faced islands have been badly ravaged by goats left over from 19th century sailors to the point of complete deforestation. Native birds once so prevalent on the these islands, including Kermadecia's national bird the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet, are locally extinct. Although the goats were removed by the 1980s, the attempted reforestation of the these islands has thus far failed.

Flora and fauna

The Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet, Kermadecia's national bird.

The interior of the island is home to a dense forest of Norfolk Pines, Kermadec Pohutukawa and Nikau Palms. It is also the southernmost place in the world where Coconut Palms are known to grow wild. The island has no native mammals, although goats, domesticated cats and polynesian rats were brought to the island by Europeans. They caused significant damage to the native plant life and seabird population until their eradication 1986 (11986).

Raoul Island is home to ten native bird species, including the national bird of Kermadecia, the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet. Other birds include species of Harriers, Pukekos, Tuis, Terns, Petrels and Boobies. Raoul Island is listed as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.

The waters off Raoul Island support coral reefs and hundreds of fish species, and is home to five of the world's seven sea turtle species. Black Gruppers, Drummers and Chocolate Seastars also inhabit the offshore coral reefs. The island and waters surrounding it are part of the Kermadec Islands Marine Reserve, New Zealand's largest marine reservation.

The island is also home to several invasive plant species that New Zealand DOC workers are currently in the process of removing, including the massive Norfolk Pine populations.

On 28 March 2016 (4 April 12016), the Grand Council created the New Starland Wildlife Refuge. It encompassed the entirety of the Docland District, and was deemed off-limits to settlement. The Refuge was created to solve the issue of bringing domesticated animals to Raoul Island, but the idea has since been abandoned in favor of ecological regulation for all of Kermadecia, not just one District.

Culture

Kermadecia's national motto,"Nos arnoldus, fortis et audax." in Kermenglish.

Kermadecian society is largely homogeneous, with no specific ruling class. There is no state-sponsored religion and no commonly held political ideology. The total population is consists of seventeen citizens, 58.8% of which are males and 41.2% of which are females. The majority of the population (88.2%) is of European ancestry, and the mean age among the citizenry is 19.7 years.

Kermadecia has non-discrimination policies that cover education, income level, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, political ideology, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and mental disabilities.

Kermadecia's national language is Kermadec English (Kermenglish), which is identical to American English except in one regard. Kermenglish uses the Precurian alphabet developed by Naughty Dog, Inc. for the Jak and Daxter video game series.

Kermadecia's calendar uses a combination of two different dating systems: the 13 month International Fixed Calendar and Holocene Years. Thus, the Georgian date Tuesday 13 September 2005 becomes Wednesday 4 September 12005.

Drew Star Line Legacy

A piece of playground equipment at Roger R. Bell Elementary School, where the Drew Star Line Legacy was born.

Kermadecia is a part of a series of micronations known collectively as the Drew Star Line Legacy (the Legacy), an entity founded on 13 September 2005 (4 September 12005) as Drew Star Line (DSL). The Legacy was traditionally led by the six founders of DSL: Diego Bell, Violette Clingersmith, Caleb Flaville, Jericho Gilmore, Tegan Paris and Justin Zeller. Together they were known as the Old Dogs, but on 1 November 2016 Clingersmith expanded this title to include all thirty-six individuals who were citizens of DSL-Starland at some point or another. There are currently eleven Old Dogs counted among Kermadecia's citizenry, the others being termed as New Dogs.

The Legacy maintains the history and culture of its micronations, of which the currently active ones are Kermadecia, Hiraeth, and the remnants of the defunct New Pamlico Federation. As such they are the keepers of national records in the two countries, and have a significant if unofficial advising role in the governments of each nation. Several traditions of the Legacy have been installed into Kermadecia, among them the national colors of green, orange and yellow. Because the Legacy is often considered separate from the micronations it comprises, it has been occasionally called in to help enforce Kermadecia's interests, most notably during the October Crisis and subsequent Transition Era.
