The Republic of Chelonia, more commonly known as Chelonia, is a micronation in located in San Diego, California. The nation was first established on May 30, 2020 when Keirou Reikawa left an inactive Kylbardé Federation, a micronation he formerly governed. Chelonia is currently a unitary republic with the head of state, the president being democratically elected by the citizenry. Currently, Chelonia is split into 5 municipal districts, all of which share a similar Mediterranean climate.

Etymology

The Republic of Chelonia was named after a typo by one of the founder's friends, in a message sent by one of them. It was a typo trying to spell the word “Chlorine” but instead got Chelonia. The founder ended up sticking with the name, stating it “sounds like a country name of some sort”. The 2 began by choosing a flag, and a national symbol. At the start, the national symbol was a red panda, suggested by one of the founders, and was the national symbol for about 2 months until the recent change to a new symbol. Recent studies have found that “Chelonia” was the name of a cult in a popular video game called “Red Dead Redemption 2”. An interview with one of the founders stated that he didn’t know that beforehand, and was surprised about such a coincidence. Unfortunately, the two founders broke off and whether or not the two are still in contact is still widely unknown. Reikawa continues to rule Chelonia under his administration.

History

On May 30, 2020, current president and founder of Chelonia, Jun Kujirai, founded the nation of Chelonia, in an effort to continue the legacy of the Kylbardé Federation, a nation he struggled to maintain as there was no stable government able to keep it alive. Within the early nomadic periods of the nation, several "proto-Chelonese" governments were installed throughout 2018 - 2020 during the Shoukaku-Era. These governments were to later develop into several countries: United People's Republic of Zyechia, Federal Republic of Gradeni, The Republic of Brokeistan (later becoming the Republic of Ireboke) and the The Kylbardé Federation.

After the Shoukaku era, civil war began to break out between former states Zyechia and Gradeni, later ending their alliances. A later coup within the government of Kylbard, which pushed for a parlimentary government rather then a democratic one, had caused the start of the Kylbardian Downfall, which caused the downfall of the Kylbard Federation and a breakup of all the federated states, similar to that of Yugoslavia and later becoming the modern day districts of Chelonia.

With this, Jun Kujirai, a former government member of the Kylbard Federation, and an unknown accomplice, had formed what is now Chelonia.

Military

The Chelonese Armed Forces (Siłnade Zbrorker zav Chelonskjien) was founded during the Post-Kylbardian Downfall. The forces are a 20+ soldier regiment known as “44th Marines’ and do training at the fields until the pandemic closed down the field. The force's motto “Walcpa Dalejpå” translates to “Fight On’ in Chelonese. Although the forces cannot carry out legal operations or firearms, since the laws restrict so, the forces are armed with airsoft, bb guns, knives, nerf guns, and sticks. Weapons are forbidden on the fields, so instead the force’s regulate hand to hand combat instead. The Chelonese Air Force (Siłnade Powietrzgapen zav Chelonskjien) is planning on conducting a new project called “Project 77F” which will start the production of faster and more reliable planes. The Armed Forces have not been involved with any foreign conflicts since its founding.

Geography and climate

Czieki Hill, located in Mo-Iya.

The climate in Chelonia has been classified as a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters, though it tends to be more arid than the typical Mediterranean climate. In winter temperatures can go from 20~25C, but they may differ depending on the time of the day. Colder nights during the season can reach down to below 20C. Summer temperatures go up to around 25~35C near Kantami, but in the more desert areas such as Sabaku, temperatures can reach up to 50C+ especially during the summer. The rainy season in Chelonia tends to begin around April or March depending on the current climate. There have not been any major disasters other than a couple of earthquakes and the occasional thunderstorm. Floods, especially flash floods, are a usual occurrence as well, usually happening during rainy seasons or whatnot. Fires are not a rare occurrence either and can be very dangerous during the summer season where hot temperatures can spark a fire without notice. The Chelonese Weather Broadcast ( Pogoder Transändning zav Chelonskjien) conducted a study in which wildfires are the most prone threat to the Chelonese mainland, and could wreak havoc to those living there. Tsunamis, volcanoes, and tornadoes have never been recorded to occur in the surrounding areas of Chelonia.

Economy

The Chelonese Economy is currently in a rough state, as costs of food in the nation skyrocket due to the pandemic. Although the Chelonese Parliament hasn’t been able to conduct a full-scale lockdown of the nation, citizens are required to perform basic hygiene. For now, though, the economy is currently struggling to regain its lost money to the pandemic by doing labor and such. Exports in the nation are typically done by selling food in public spaces. For the most part, sales in Chelonia are usually done with little to no regulation or taxation. On February 2022, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, economic sanctions on oil and gas impacted Chelonia at a great extent. With gas and electricity being a crucial part of the Chelonese economy, many citizens speculate how the Parliament of Chelonia will handle this crisis. Many companies within Chelonia have boycotted Russian goods and exports as well as banning all Russian outlets from entering the nation.
