Public holidays in Vishwamitra are regulated at both federal and state levels, mainly based on a list of federal holidays observed nationwide and in the overseas territories plus a few additional holidays observed by each individual states and in the overseas territories. The public holidays are a mix of secular holidays celebrating the nation and its history, and selected traditional holidays of the various ethnic and religious groups that make up the country.

Public holidays are determined at the beginning of a new year as per the Gregorian calendar by the Ministry of Home Affairs with approval from the Rashtradhyaksh. State holidays, those celebrated in particular states, excluding the federal ones are determined by their respective Rajpramukhs while the Administrators of the overseas territories have the power to legislate and decree holidays to be observed in the respective territories.

Overview

National holidays

National public holidays are fixed by the federal government and are observed nationwide with some exceptions. They are:

The National holidays are celebrated throughout the nation with a closure of all offices of the government excluding those of emergency affairs.

Restricted holidays

The restricted holidays are also a part of the federal public holidays which are observed throughout the nation but not as grandly as the national holidays. These involves religious and other holidays.

The restricted or religious holidays are observed throughout the nation with an exception to the overseas territories. The closure of offices are decided by the respective departmental heads.

State holidays

In addition to the national and restricted holidays, each state may gazette a number of state public holidays to be observed in the state. In every state, the official birthday of the state ruler is celebrated as a public holiday.

Holidays by declaration

The Rashtradhyaksh reserves the right to declare any date or occasion as a holiday if they deem there is a necessity for such. Similarly, the prime minister also reserves the power to declare a date as a holiday. State mournings or other days of mournings are not mentioned in any public holiday list are to be gazetted extraordinarily by the Rashtradhyaksh or the Prime Minister or any of the authorized officials.

At the state level, the state government may declare an occasional holiday for events such as the installation of the state ruler and other important events. For such, the Rajpramukhs reserve the power to declare such holidays at their pleasure when they deem there is a necessity for such.

Types of holidays

Vishwamitra has one of the highest numbers of public holidays in the world. Some holidays are federally gazetted public holidays and some are public holidays observed by individual states. Other festivals are observed by particular ethnic or religion groups, but are not public holidays. The main holy days of each major religion are public holidays, taking place on either the western calendar or religious ones.

Secular

The most widespread holiday is the National Day on 15 April commemorating the foundation of the Children's Group. This, as well as Rashtradhyaksh's Birthday (11 January), Monarchy Day (8 June), and Constitution Day (1 August) and some other festivals are major national public holidays. Several other restricted holidays including New Year's Day is also celebrated federally but are not gazetted as national holidays.

Religious and ethnic

Hindu holidays are highly prominent in Vishwamitra alongside festivals of other religious, prominently Muslim holidays and Christian holidays. The most important of the Hindu festivals include Holi, the festival of colours; Durga Puja, the festival marking the largest annual autumn festival celebrated mainly by the people of the Bengali community; and Diwali, the festival of lights marking the victory of good over evil. The hindu festivals are celebrated in all the states and not in the overseas territories.

Among the Muslim holidays include the three prominent festivals of Eid-ul-Fitr, a festival generally honoured by the Muslims worldwide marking the end of Ramadan will the fasting month; w:Eid-ul-Zuha (also known as Bakrid or Eid-ul-Adha), a festival to commemorate of Abraham (Ibrahim)'s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience of a command from God and also to mark the end of the annual Hajj to Mecca; and the festival of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year. The muslim holidays are observed in all the states and in the overseas territory of New Indischeland.

The most prominent Buddhist festival is Wesak which commemorates of the birth of Buddha is also a religious holiday. The Christian community observes most of the holidays observed by Christians elsewhere, most notably Christmas, Good Friday, and Easter. The christian festivals are observed federally. The birth of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism is also observed as a public holiday in the states. The prominent Jewish festival of Hannukkah is another religious holiday but is not deemed as a public holiday and is observed by the Jewish community.

The Assamese festival of Bihu is also celebrated widely in all the states as public holidays.
