Politics of Veritalia

The Politics of Veritalia take place within the framework of a semi-simulated Democratic Republic with an elected Head of State, elected Head of Government and elected bicameral legislature. The simulated and real aspects of Veritalian government are delicately blended together to ensure that whatever happens in reality is reflected in the simulation, preventing exploitation of the simulated aspect of government. This marks a drastic shift in leadership attitudes noted in Veritalia's predecessor states - although none of them made the step to claiming territorial autonomy, all operated realistic legislative and governmental systems.
Simulation vs Reality
The simulated aspect of Veritalian government is directly based on the reality. During an election period, each active citizen is given one federal electoral college vote - these votes are used to determine the outcome of results during General Elections. If, for example, one political party gets 6 of 10 electoral votes it gets 60.00% of the seats in the Legislature. This, in turn, determines who becomes President and Chancellor. Within the legislature citizens may chose to take any one of the seats their party has won. When the legislatue votes on matters, a formula is used to determine how simulated seats vote. This formula accounts for rebellions by individual legislature members in parties, allowing a minority party to possibly secure a majority vote over an unpopular policy.
Political parties
There are currently four political parties who have representation in national legislature, controlling 90.00% of available seats (the other 10.00% are independents). The table below details the breakdown of these political parties.

Legislature
The Legislature of Veritalia is the highest and only law making authority in Veritalia. Veritalian legislature is bicameral with two houses, the collective legislative entity being known as the Gesetzgebende Bundesautorität, known in English as the Federal Legislative Authority. The lower house of the Authority is the largest and most powerful, with 459 registered seats in the simulation. The upper house is less powerful and has only 250 seats. The primary function of the upper house is to verify legislature of the lower house, as is the case in the United Kingdom, although it has certain special constitutional legislative duties.
Zusammenbau der Leute
The Zusammenbau der Leute, ZDL or People's Assembly is the lower house. Almost all proposed legislature is submitted through the ZDL for debate and subsequent ratification. It is the largest of the two legislative houses and has much more de facto power than the upper house. The number of seats must always be odd in an attempt to ensure that every item receives a majority vote of some sort, although the power of abstinence effectively makes this measure pointless in many cases. Every Assembly Member has the right to propose, debate, draft and vote on any item of legislature. Unlike in Erusia, Bzan and Licentia the Zusammenbau der Leute has a speaker elected at the end of every election, typically belonging to the largest party in the Assembly. The current speaker is Kai Roosevelt, a member of the Einzelne Nationspartei.
Once a bill in the ZDL is passed it must be submitted to the upper house for ratification. This stage may be bypassed if the Chancellor, President and Speaker all countersign the bill and grant it Imperial Assent. Otherwise, it remains possible for a bill to be rejected after being passed by the Assembly, though this is rare.
Zusammenbau des Reiches
The Zusammenbau der Reiches, ZDR or Imperial Assembly is the upper house of the Authority. It has considerably less power than the Zusammenbau der Leute, instead serving primarily to check and verify the bills proposed by the lower house. The ZDR does have the power to propose and vote on independent items of legislature but these are heavily restricted by the national constitution. During a General Election, the Imperial Asssembly verifies the nomination for the Head of State and Head of Government. The ZDR is also the only legislative house permitted to pass a vote of no confidence in the standing government. The Chancellor is the Speaker of the Zusammenbau des Reiches, unlike the lower house which has an independent office for the Speaker. Currently, Chancellor Jenkins is the Speaker. This is unusual in that Jenkins is leader of the Demokratische Arbeitspartei, a splinter faction of the Einzelne Nationspartei that has only 10.00% of the seats in both houses.
