The flag of Vancouver Island was adopted as the national flag of the Dominion of Vancouver Island on 18 February 2020. Its design consists of a Blue Ensign with the badge of the 19th century Colony of Vancouver Island on a white disc on the fly half. It was designed by Michael Halleran in 1988.
History
The design of the flag is based on rules established by the Admiralty for colonial flags in 1865, and borrows elements from the Great Seal of the Colony of Vancouver Island. Most historians agree that such a flag likely never existed during this time period, so Michael Halleran re-designed it in 1988 as an unofficial regional flag for Vancouver Island.

Use of the flag
Since its adoption as a national flag for the Dominion of Vancouver Island in 2020, the flag has been used to represent Vancouver Islanders both at home and abroad. Besides its status as a national flag on land, it is also used as a national ensign when flown at sea. The flag can be flown by any individual or organization in the dominion on any day of their choice. As is the case with Canada, the Union Jack also has official status within the country as the "Royal Union Flag." For the civil ensign, a Red Ensign is used.
The Governor-General of Vancouver Island uses a personal flag consisting of a royal blue background with a Royal Crest in the center, and the words "VANCOUVER ISLAND" in black letters on a gold scroll below the Crest. A similar design is used by the governor-general's of most Commonwealth realms.
Half-mast
The flag is flown from government buildings at half-mast in the following situations:
- Upon the announcement of the death of the Sovereign
- The day of the funeral of a member of the Royal Family
- The funeral of a foreign head of state
- The funeral of any citizen or government official of the Dominion of Vancouver Island
The flag can also be flown at half-mast for other reasons, at the discretion of the governor-general
