Nutopia (stylized in uppercase as NUTOPIA) is a conceptual non-territorial country, sometimes referred to as a micronation. Nutopia was founded on 2 April 1973 by ex-Beatle John Lennon to satirize his ongoing immigration problems and make an imaginary nation based on his political views. A citizen of Nutopia is anyone who declares themselves aware of the existence of Nutopia. There is no leadership or organized government.[citation needed]

Etymology

Nutopia is a portmanteau of "new" and "utopia" which suggests Nutopia is a new, utopian society.[citation needed]

History

Lennon and Ono at the press conference where they announced the establishment of Nutopia.

Lennon and Ono were ambassadors of the country and sought diplomatic immunity to end Lennon's ongoing immigration troubles, as he tried to remain in the United States. Lennon earlier had been denied permanent residence status due to the Nixon administration making a "strategic counter-measure" against Lennon's anti-war and anti-Nixon propaganda.[1] Living up to the ideals stated in his song "Imagine", Lennon would state this in the "official" declaration:

We announce the birth of a conceptual country, NUTOPIA. Citizenship of the country can be obtained by declaration of your awareness of NUTOPIA. NUTOPIA has no land, no boundaries, no passports, only people. NUTOPIA has no laws other than cosmic. All people of NUTOPIA are ambassadors of the country. As two ambassadors of NUTOPIA, we ask for diplomatic immunity and recognition in the United Nations of our country and its people.

After Nixon's leaving of office, Ford's administration showed little interest in continuing the battle against Lennon. Lennon's deportation order was overturned in 1975. The following year, he received his green card, certifying his permanent residency, and ended talks about Nutopia.

Symbols

As pacifists, John Lennon and Yoko Ono adopted the white flag to represent "surrender to peace." The Nutopian International Anthem was released under Lennon's album Mind Games. The song consisted of three seconds of silence. The seal of Nutopia has a picture of a literal seal.[3]
