The logo of MicroWiki between 7 November 2010 and 28 November 2013, and 15 April 2015 and 23 March 2017 featuring the wiki's motto at the time.

As of 2023, online micronational encyclopaedia and wiki MicroWiki has one official motto. A motto accompanying the wiki's name appears at the top of every page—"the free micronational encyclopædia." Indeed, the motto has experienced some usage since the motto's formal inception on 23 March 2017, however it was mostly phased out on 13 January 2021 with the redesign of the main page. It was brought back on 29 July 2022. The mottos of MicroWiki—past and present—have appeared on the main page, at the top of the website, MicroWiki's logo, content pages and on related projects. Since MicroWiki's foundation on 27 May 2005, it has had seven official mottos in use, with the first being adopted on 15 July 2006—"the free micronational database that anyone can edit."

In February 2008, the motto became in simultaneous use alongside "The wiki for Micronations," which appeared at the top left of all pages on MicroWiki alongside the wiki's logo. "The free micronational database that anyone can edit" was replaced by "the free Micronational database" on 10 February 2009, followed by "the free encyclopedia on micronationalism and micropatriology, that anyone can edit" on 25 September 2010. Following the wiki's migration to MicroWiki.org.uk in November, a new logo was adopted which replaced "The wiki for Micronations"—"The micronational encyclopædia." The motto on the main page was also changed to "the free micronational encyclopædia," which it would remain until January 2021 when the main page was redesigned.

A new logo, which was accompanied by "The Micronation.org Wiki," was briefly in use between 28 November 2013 and 15 April 2015, when the logo and motto were reverted. On 23 March 2017, a new logo was adopted which featured no motto. Thus, "the free micronational encyclopædia" on the main page and "the micronational encyclopædia"—as seen at the top of content pages since November 2010—became the only two mottos in use. On 13 January 2021, the motto was removed from the main page all together. On 29 July 2022, "the micronational encyclopædia" motto was changed to "the free micronational encyclopædia."

History

"The free micronational database that anyone can edit" (seen here in November 2006)
"The micronational encyclopædia" appeared at the top of every page on the wiki between November 2010 and 29 July 2022

When MicroWiki was founded by Fabian Schneider on 27 May 2005, it had no motto. The wiki's first de facto motto, "the free micronational database that anyone can edit," would be adopted on 15 July 2006 upon its addition to the main page by active editor Jeffrey II of Satirocity.[1] The addition of said motto came after several edits were made by Jeffrey II in a series of overhauls to redesign the main page. As Jeffrey II was not an administrator at the time, it could be considered unofficial.[a] Nevertheless, as the most prolific editor, Jeffrey II would be promoted to the status on 18 August by Schneider during his brief return to the wiki while the motto was still seen on the main page. The difficulty of searching edit revisions and lack of early snapshots of MicroWiki available on the Wayback Machine makes it difficult to assess how widely the motto was used on wiki beyond the main page.

Around February 2008, the motto "The wiki for Micronations" appeared at the top left of all pages on MicroWiki by its logo.[2] "The free micronational database that anyone can edit" would still be on the main page until 10 February 2009, when, following a redesign by administrator Alexander Reinhardt, the motto was changed to "the free Micronational database."[3] On 25 September 2010, the header of the main page was redesigned by Reinhardt, this time with the adoption of the motto "the free encyclopedia on micronationalism and micropatriology, that anyone can edit."[4] In mid- to late November, following the wiki's migration to MicroWiki.org.uk, a new logo was adopted which was accompanied by the motto "The micronational encyclopædia". This formally replaced "The wiki for Micronations," while the motto seen on the main page briefly became "the free micronational encyclopædia that anyone can edit."[5] A motto also appeared at the top of all pages on MicroWiki, accompanied by text indicating to the reader that they are on MicroWiki; "from MicroWiki, the micronational encyclopædia".

Between at least May 2011[6] and 13 January 2021, the motto "the free micronational encyclopædia" was used on the main page. On 28 November 2013, a new logo and motto were adopted which implemented "The Micronation.org Wiki." "The free micronational encyclopædia" was still in use on the main page. These changes were reverted on 15 April 2015. On 23 March 2017, a new logo was adopted which featured no motto.[7] Thus, "the free micronational encyclopædia" on the main page and "the micronational encyclopædia"—as seen at the top of pages—became the only two mottos in use. On 13 January 2021, the main page had its first major redesign in over a decade, and administrator Andrew removed the motto from the main page, effectively making "the micronational encyclopædia" the only official motto of MicroWiki.[8] On 29 July 2022, said motto was changed to "the free micronational encyclopædia" by co-owner Karl Friedrich.[9]

List of mottos

The following is a comprehensive list of all the mottos MicroWiki has used in some capacity. It has been in use since 29 July 2022, having been first used between November 2010 and 13 January 2021.

Other mottos

While no motto is on use on the wiki, MicroWiki's Patreon, opened on 9 January 2021, calls it "MicroWiki, the free micronational encyclopædia."[10] The banner on MicroWiki's Twitter account states "[MicroWiki is a] Free on-line micronational encyclopædia that anyone can edit."[11] This is in reference to a running inside joke in the web series Half-Life VR but the AI is Self-Aware. Furthermore, the motto had also been changed on several occasions to commemorate April Fools' Day—in 2017 it was "the free George Michaelal encyclopædia," and in 2019 it was "the free-soil micronational encyclopædia"—written in gibberish called gnome speak.[12][13]
