The Secretary of State for Local Government was the senior minister at the Ministry of Local Government and a member of the Cabinet. The Local Government Secretary was previously the overseer of local governments, however since Federation, the office was used only to introduce new legislation in provincial relations.
History
Formation
The position was created on 19 July 2021, when Lily Diviney became the first Minister of Local Government. She was sacked on 3 November 2021 with the position remaining vacant until Katherine Keadivich, former First Secretary of State and Foreign Secretary was appointed on 28 November 2021 by Thomas Jacobs after the November 2021 Roscamistan elections.
Renaming
She was replaced on 19 April 2022, when Rafe Burfield became the Minister, and subsequently Secretary of State for Local Government. Keadivich was made Minister without Portfolio. On 7 August 2022, six day after Burfield’s resignation, May Collins was appointed to the position.
Role
The Local Government Secretary was responsible for the oversight of the implementation of governing bodies within the subdivisions. The Local Government Secretary also was seen as the impartial overseer of all devolved bodies.
