Admin Elections March 2011

So, if you haven't heard already, I'm stepping down from my position as admin on the wiki. If you haven't, click here.

Anyway, we need admin nominations. Nominations are open until 1200 GMT, 10th March 2011 which is when elections will commence for five days. Please post under 'nominations' only with your signature or username if you wish to run. § Fishy § Your friendly neighbourhood Admin (TalkContribs)

Nominations

I accept your generous offer, Tom. Let the fun begin! --Daniel Anderson, Siroccan Premier. 07:17, 8 March 2011 (GMT)
I have already requested to not participate in this election for personal reasons. Regardless, if there is notable support for my nomination, I am content with taking part. --Puchowskijk, your friendly insignificant goon 13:04, 6 March 2011 (GMT)
He'd already posted that before you said you weren't going to take part and I suppose this means you are going to take part.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  20:01, 7 March 2011 (GMT)
Ah, :D. Basically, I "request" that those in favour of me taking part in the election should say so, otherwise I will again, remove myself because it's not worth it. Hope that clears it up :) --Puchowskijk, your friendly insignificant goon 22:10, 7 March 2011 (GMT)
It is unsigned.
It nominates a user who has been banned.
The nominee will be banned at the conclusion of voting
Msander: Always ask questions. 09:49, 7 March 2011 (GMT)
Being banned is a teeny-weeny problem (*rolls eyes*) but the amount of fuss that would be thrown if I were to remove him from running is too much to deal with over so little so I'll just leave him here, for now at least. Another admin can feel free to remove him though, if they wish.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  20:01, 7 March 2011 (GMT)

NOMINATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED.

Harshvardhan is not eligible to be nominated because his is currently banned.

Comments

Not that it matters, but here's my opinion on all the candidates so far. I haven't decided yet who I'm going to vote for so now's your chance to convince me. =D  aldy@wiki:~$ _  08:52, 8 March 2011 (GMT)

Voting

To vote, please put only your signature underneath the user you wish to cast your vote for and update the vote tally next to the user. In the event of a tie for the most votes, there will be runoff elections. Candidates cannot vote for themselves and sockpuppeting (creation of multiple accounts by a single user) and meatpuppeting (registering accounts for the sole purpose of voting) is forbidden. Below is an example of how to vote:

VOTING CLOSED at 00:00 on March 15, 2011. Results are as follows:

Nominee Billyneil Kozuc Puchowskijk Westlandian Parker I Vitcash SiroccanGov
Votes 2 1 14 0 1 5 9

Thus, Puchowski has comfortably won with a margin of five votes and has been appointed an admin on both MicroWiki and the forums. Congratulations to all contestants and a warm welcome to Puchowski as he joins the admin team.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  00:53, 15 March 2011 (GMT)

Recently I noticed that the CC logo at the bottom of each page changed from CC-BY-SA to CC-BY-NC-ND. Is there any particular reason for this? Msander: Always ask questions. 05:07, 6 March 2011 (GMT)

That happened a while ago and it's because when we installed MediaWiki, we selected the wrong license - it's not really a big deal anyway ;) § Fishy § Your friendly neighbourhood Admin (TalkContribs) 00:08, 10 March 2011 (GMT)
Actually, thanks to Wikia imposing CC-BY-SA on everyone, we are breaking IP law if we use a licence other than CC-BY-SA. Msander: Always ask questions. 07:38, 10 March 2011 (GMT)

Even if we're not breaking the law, CC-BY-SA (or CC-BY-NC-SA) is a better license for MicroWiki as there's no good reason to prohibit derivative works.  ~~♥~~ Jeremy Oakes (words • deeds)  12:10, 26 March 2011 (GMT)

Pictures

I need some helpers to help me re upload the pictures from the old wiki to this one, i've done, i think, about 200 so far and if i am ever going to complete the task I will need some assistance. The best way I find to do it is to get up a random article then get uo it's mate on the old wiki and simply save the picture to my memory and re upload it onto the current page by clicking on the pictures red link, its that simple. I DEMAND THAT INSULTING HEADER BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY! it is childish and rude, their is no reason for it to be there! and if you want proof, I'll give you plenty of proof, ask the VP, Logan clarke (if your lucky enough to get hold of him) Starland, ASK THEM ALL AND THEY CAN PROVE! I am appuled at the sheer the disrespect that we have gotten from you all! what makes you think you can say things like this and be praised for it? is it fun insulting people just because you have power! you are pigs! if you ban me, GO AHEAD!!! A sheer of disrespect? YOU guys are being disrespectful to the real civil wars, to the real conflicts, claiming that you're "fighting" for a goddam micronation. YOU are a shame for real micronationalists who try to make this a serious thing. If micronationalism is seen as a bunch of cretins with flags, it's all because of your lack of seriousness. Grow up. And no, other than you being an Internet Tough Guy/BAWWW at the same time, I have no intention to ban you, you haven't violated the rules. Jaxson. Seriously. If I were you, I would have approached the Administration politely and diplomatically. By SHOUTING LIEK THIS BECAUSE YOU'RE ANGRY AS HELL, you just give us the impression you're either drunk or you are taking this too seriously. The Administration does understand how you may find the current situation; you're annoyed that we are telling to you not have a war etc etc. and that bugs you, well, this community has had too many a civil war and conflict and we don't need this. Micronations do not physically invade each other, not here anyway, hence why MicroWiki never takes war seriously. It's a lame excuse for publicity and gets everyone else in uproar. I hope you understand. --Puchowskijk, your friendly insignificant goon 07:50, 22 March 2011 (GMT)
ITT: Admins being snarky. Srsly tho, I suppose I should clear a few things up. Firstly, CRUISE CONTROL is not a good way of getting an admin to do something for you. Secondly, the onus of proof is on you, why should we research to see if it's real or not? Thirdly, telling us off for allegedly "insulting people" and showing "disrespect" is rather hypocritical when you later call us "pigs". Oink oink. Fourthly, you've requested on numerous occasions to be banned. That's a perfectly valid reason to ban someone and I took the liberty of doing so for two hours. For the record though, you did say you were going to being playing baseball, so I figured it wouldn't actually affect you. Also the fact that you claimed you'd continue anyway, somehow. I was kind of interested in finding out how you'd do that. For science! Fifthly, despite the fact I'd removed the banner, you still continued to act in a disrespectful manner which, if anything, only reinforced our opinions about you. Sixthly, I hate the admit system too, it's really annoying when people just expect you to tell the truth. Damn it, stupid admitting to things. Seventhly, I use number listing too much. Eighthly, z0mg, your email's powerful. I'm scared. *blabber, blabber* Oink oink. CIVILITY FTW!!11 Ninethly, I should probably stop before I get too surreal cereal and get told off by an admin. Soz. Lastly, leave if you hate us all and think that the feeling is mutual. No-one's forcing you to stay here. If it suits you, just ignore me. I couldn't care less.

Pictures 2

I say chaps, if my calculations are correct, I've uploaded at least 1000 pictures since 7th-8th November last year. Again, if my calculations are correct, it should take me until January next year to upload all the 1875 (as of when I leave this thread) of the others left behind on my own. I don't want to have to do that. Could at least 3 helpers help me with the job by visiting Special:WantedFiles, clicking on each pictures "n Links" link, copying the image file name to the old wiki, saving them and then re-uploading them on here, I'm starting to tire of the lack of assistance.

Also, could one of the admins provide me with a list of pictures we do in fact have so I can copy them all to my memory just in case we move and lose them all again.

p.s. If you encounter a stubborn .svg file link and your computer only save .svg files as .png files as all the ones I use do change the link to .png or just .png so it actually works.

B.C.E.R Neil, President of T.F.o.E, Copy Editor and Patroller.(Talk) 15:40, 1 April 2011 (GMT)

Oh, right, you wanted a list of pictures that already exist, sorry for not providing it earlier. =P Special:ListFiles has a sortable list of every file on the wiki. If you click on any files and it just brings up a blank page (like opening a new tab), just link me or another admin and I'll delete it as it's too big or otherwise corrupt in some way. Again, thanks. Also, prospective admins, this is a good way of showing that you're committed to the wiki and are willing to do extremely mundane work. It'll look good on your resume and your prospective employers (the admins) and constituency (everyone else) might look well upon you as a result. ;)  aldy@wiki:~$ _  21:45, 1 April 2011 (GMT)

Bots

The way my wiki fixed the bot problem is by placing a question in our user creation log. First we had math but the bots can do that. Use something like "what is the first letter of the alphabet". Ref tag extension

Hey guys, even though there aren't many referenced articles on the wiki, I'm just letting you know about a little extension to the "ref" tags that comes in very handy as it is quick to use and reduces both article and server space.

Instead of simply writing "<ref>" in front of a reference, write <ref name="I am cool">. When you have to reference the same document, simply put in <ref name="I am cool"/>.

So for example: My name is SerCenKing[1]. I am also a patroller on UESP[1].

And ta-dah! Look's beatiful doesn't it? To see its noticeable effect on a page check this out. For an idea of what it will look like on a page see Observergate. Hope this is useful in some way :) --SerCenKing 10:51, 16 April 2011 (GMT)

"Sandus" - "Rukora" articles

Before I start, there's no conspiracy theory here, so all those who were going to post something like that, please refrain from doing so. Now, I was thinking that "Sandus" should be on the left section of the page instead of Rukora, as it has been around for much more time and, despite what we might say, it has been a rather influential nations, both positively and negatively (depends on the opinions). What do you all say? --Cajak 13:59, 16 April 2011 (GMT)

Nah, I didn't even know who Sandus were until they started going on about the 'Recalled to Life' thing and besides, Rukora are a bit more readily active in the community, again, it is only recently that I have noticed anyone from Sandus contributing to the wiki and forum. I may be very wrong here, and if so inform me, but I say we should just leave it the way it is. Besides, it looks more apposite with Rukora there. B.C.E.R Neil, President of T.F.o.E, Copy Editor and Patroller.(Talk) 14:28, 16 April 2011 (GMT)
If you're just now figuring out who we are, then you haven't been around as long as I'd thought. I've posted several articles, videos and written on the newsfeed. If that hasn't provoked some queries, I don't know what will. --Sôgmô of Sandus, Will Sörgel 19:58, 16 April 2011 (GMT)
I've been a micronationalist since 2002 but i've only been on the microwiki since March 2010, and even then I didn't discover the 'Recent Changes' page a couple months ago, and since then I cannot be certain I have seen any edits from you. No offence intended of course, I wouldn't overly care if Sandus replaced Rukora, besides my opinion on the matter is pretty meaningless and likely to be ignored so...B.C.E.R Neil, President of T.F.o.E, Copy Editor and Patroller.(Talk) 20:40, 16 April 2011 (GMT)
Conspirators! Down with the aristocracy! Nah, we decided a while back to just take the top six nations on the influence survey and I don't really see why we should change it. Granted, the next survey might bring skewed results, so we might have to do a proper vote/decision then, but for now, the last survey seemed pretty accurate.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  23:16, 16 April 2011 (GMT)
I'll try not to be offended at the fact that you believe than Sandus is not as influential as Rukora. Oh, and this just further supports my worries as to how far the OAM has been entrenched into the community. --Sôgmô of Sandus, Will Sörgel 03:27, 17 April 2011 (GMT)
I personally think that Sandus is far more influential than Rukora (no offense, Tom :P), and I too am a little worried about how a survey from the OAM is considered the "official" ranking of the community. However, the community did agree to use the results for the sidebar, so I think we should stick to that and not make exceptions unless the community agrees to change how we choose who goes in the sidebar. Oh, and another thing - if Rukora was replaced with Sandus, I would like the FRA1 to be replaced with Austenasia, seeing how the Empire is older than the Federated Republic, considered "more notable" by Wikipedia, and A1 apparently isn't even in the community any more. But back to the point - Will, I agree with you in principle, but I don't think the rules of what the community agreed should be bent, even if it does sort of make sense. Austenasia 07:26, 17 April 2011 (GMT)
If you're going to bag us, at least get our name right. Older? In that case, we should replace Yabloko on the sidebar as well as Rukora. Wikipedia means bollocks for micronationalism - everyone knows that. And if your micronation's "notability" depends on Wikipedia and some newspaper article, there's at least one problem somewhere. If the FRA1 link is replaced for any reason, it's for that last one. In any case, we made a decision and that's how the sidebar works. Done, dusted, move on. § Fishy § (TalkContribs) 09:48, 17 April 2011 (GMT)
What Fishy said. We're doing this based on the whole community opinion, not those of a few members within it. If the whole community votes to change it, fine. Currently though, consensus stands and just because a couple of micronationalists are offended by not appearing on there doesn't mean it should be drastically changed. Really, appearing on MicroWiki's sidebar is not the epitome of micronationalism. Besides, as I've said previously, the OAM Influence Survey is OAM-material in name only; the last two surveys were conducted entirely on the MW Forum and weren't even mentioned on the OAM. And yeah, let's replace everyone with Satirocity or something, because they're older and everything. <_<  aldy@wiki:~$ _  10:21, 17 April 2011 (GMT)
Well this is a fascinating case of double-standards. Please tell me that the sidebar has not been expanded to seven nations simply so that A1 can remain on it? Where is the community consensus on that? I thought it was agreed - the nations on the sidebar are the six highest in the OAM Influence Survey: no more, no less. Austenasia 07:39, 30 May 2011 (GMT)
Yes, because the logical conclusion instead of politely informing an admin about it is to go off crying on the Community portal immediately assuming bad faith. PROTIP: Ask politely next time.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  07:48, 30 May 2011 (GMT)

Diplomacy

People,

I know we can all agree that most of the time, news getting around to all of MicroWiki will take a couple days, however I stumbled upon the diplomacy article of one nation that had the Republica...Azteca nation under former relations, because apparently it was a sockpuppet of Senya. Now if this is true, what I want to know is why I, or anyone else was never informed of it?!" I think there should at least be a way of notifying someone if a nation on their diplomacy list goes defunct.

I don't know how this would specifically work, but I mean sometimes, I never get the news about a nation's dissolution until even two weeks later, and as can be seen, can cause major problems.

Just a suggestion. It doesn't have to be automated either. It could even be a nation dissolution thing on the main page or something, who knows. I really don't care, I just want something. His Lordship, David Salapatalk 16:58, 5 May 2011 (GMT)

Ummm...well what with the creation of the forums, this kind of things gets posted in there instead. Otherwise, something might be posted on the newsfeed. To be completely honest though, it's not that big of a deal and I'm not going to implement something like this any time soon. Just a heads up. =P  aldy@wiki:~$ _  22:38, 5 May 2011 (GMT)

Sabotage to MicroWiki

Hi, on wikia links to "co.cc" were blocked before, they have now expanded the restriction to the links to "org.uk", is clear that it is a form of sabotage. Therefore, from "Wiki Micronacional" (in Spanish) we cannot establish direct links to your pages, which is regrettable, but is due to causes beyond the control of the editors of the portal. Best regards.--Jatrobat 02:09, 5 June 2011 (GMT)

About the Paragraph at the Top of the Page...

In it, it says,
"...3,000 articles, of which, 16 are good articles..."
This, to the uninitiated, may mean that only 16 of our articles are good (thus implying that the other 2,900 or so are crap). I propose that someone capitalize "good articles", thus making it a proper noun and less difficult to misinterpret. It may also help to italicize it, but I'd be happy with just capitalizing it.
"...3,000 articles, of which, 16 are Good Articles..."
Much nicer, yes?  :)
The Kyngdom of Theodia  Talk-Page  Official Website  02:12, 27 June 2011 (GMT)

I've changed the wording and italicised it so that it now reads:
...39,908 articles, of which 134 have been voted as good articles.
Better now? Or would:
...39,908 articles, of which 134 have achieved good article status.
be better?  aldy@wiki:~$ _  02:37, 27 June 2011 (GMT)
After getting a third opinion and thinking about it, changed to the second option above.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  07:15, 27 June 2011 (GMT)

He wasn't banned but the creation of a second account was unnecessary, so the accounts have been merged. Vandalism on the old wiki isn't under our jurisdiction though, so there's nothing we can do about it. Discussion archived.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  00:01, 27 July 2011 (GMT)

MicroWiki series

So, I’ve decided to start adding Wikipedia-style series templates to some of the articles. So far, these can be seen at the top of Aldrich Lucas, and Alexander Reinhardt, and at the bottom of Schneider Awards and Philip Fish. Obviously I want to know if there are strong objections so that I can remove the templates immediately, but I’d also like your opinion on things such as:

  • Should the templates go at the top or bottom of articles?
  • If at the bottom, above or below nation templates?
  • How should articles for inclusion be selected? Should we restrict inclusion to articles of a high quality?

Thanks, msandertalk 06:59, 27 August 2011 (GMT)

Nevermind, they’re gone. msandertalk 07:02, 27 August 2011 (GMT)

You have to refresh the server cache by clicking on the clock on the top right-hand corner when viewing the file page as well as clearing your own cache by pressing Ctrl+F5. That should fix it.  aldy@wiki:~$ _  23:36, 27 August 2011 (GMT)
