The March 2012 Tianan General Election was an election in the People's Republic of Tiana, and the first multi-party election since Tiana's independence from the Kingdom of Zealandia. It was the first election in which the centrist Democratic Alliance for Freedom and syndicalist Socialist Labor League ran candidates, and the Communists' first multi-party election since re-attaining power in December.

Overview and backround

Independence and January elections

After a Communist electoral victory in December, Tiana began planning for independence in January 2012, and was granted independence by King Hakon on January 15th.

The January 2012 election was widely seen as a disaster, with the Federal Conservatives dropping out on voting day, leading to a 100% majority for the Communist Party. The August 2011 constitution was reinstated, setting the stage for elections to occur to March.

Annexation of Segesia

In January 2012, the Province of Segesia (originally known as Boneland) was annexed by the People's Republic of Tiana, and Teddy Knox instated as Governor. The annexation of Segesia is expected to bring about mixed results - with the Democratic Alliance gaining a safe seat in Outer Segesia, where the Communists might have otherwise had another wipeout, gaining all seats in the People's National Assembly. However, the CPT also gained two strongly left-wing electorates in Yolostan City and Inner Segesia.

Electoral reform

The 1st sitting of the People's National Assembly, under direction of Communist leader Joseph Puglisi, began a series of electoral reforms meant to ease the tedious process of electing a legislature and executive. The National Progressive Front was formed, creating an electoral system in which one list is approved or rejected.

Mansongrad Rally

The Communist Party campaign was kicked off on January 28th, when incumbent Premier Joshua Juda held a pro-government rally in Mansongrad, Altusia, in which Juda made a speech criticizing the Democrats' "Social Darwinist" policies and calling them "a party of far-right theocratic nutjobs". He cited Marilyn Manson song "the Beautiful People" as an anti-Social Darwinist song, and the song was played at the Mansongrad Rally. Another policy criticized by Juda was their economic policies for a goods and services based economy, in contrast to the Communists' agarian socialist policies.^[2]

International support for the CPT

Communist party leader and incumbent People's President Joseph Puglisi was known to have sent funding to the National Workers' Bloc of Juclandia on behalf of the Tianan government during the election campaign, after the NWB's loss in the December 2011 Great National Assembly elections.^[3] This has been seen by some critics, such as Ciprian C., otherwise known as a close political ally of Puglisi, as an interventionist tactic, however, it was defended by Puglisi as an act of Socialist internationalism. The CPT had also expressed its support of the Theodorist movements in Domanglia and Austenasia.

The Best Party of Zealandia has expressed its support for a coalition of the Communist and Labor parties.

Democratic Campaign

In response to Joshua Juda's allegations of the Democrats being far-right and theocratic at the Mansongrad Rally, DAF spokesperson at the time Richard Garrshire was quoted as saying:

"I find these allegations false, the true purpose of the DAF is to create and/or promote alternative parties to the TCPP, which represents the growing democracy in Tiana. The arrival of the DAF to the People's Republic represents a new era of coexistance and friendship to the Tianan people. We're not far-right, we're centrists, and we're not theocratic, we're secularists. DAF is renovation, and DAF is here to stay."^[4]
