The Governor of Kamrupa was the head of state of Vishwamitran state of Kamrupa during its republican era. The governor served as the principal representative of the President in the state and was responsible for the affairs and administration of the state.
Following the abolition of the republic and the establishment of the monarchy on 8 June 2020, the responsibilities and functions of the governor was transferred to the Rajpramukh of Kamrupa who is the hereditary monarch of the state and a member of the Conference of Rulers.
History
Kamrupa was first created as a special administrative territory of Vishwamitra, then known as Friends Society on 6 March 2019 by a presidential act. At the time of the creation of the territory, it was known as "Dadara and Kamrupa" and the administrator, who was appointed by the President discharged the functions as the local ruler of the territory. The administrator reported to the High Commission who in turn presented reports and communication to the President. Ankurjyoti Thakuria served as the first and only administrator.
On 15 June 2019, statehood was granted to Dadara and Kamrup and it came to be known as the state of "Kamrup Pradesh" thus becoming the nation's sixth-ever and newest state. Following the grant of statehood, a non-local governor was appointed by the President in the same pattern of the other states. Rajdeep Deka, the then governor of Madhya Guwahati was transferred and appointed as the first governor of Kamrup Pradesh.
Following the passing of the State Reorganization Act - Kamrup Pradesh on 25 December 2019, Kamrup Pradesh ceased to be a state of the union on midnight of 31 December 2019 and became an union territory and was named as "Kamrupa". Until 10 February 2020, the head of the union territory was the lieutenant governor, but then the lieutenant governor was titled as governor.
Functions and role
The governor of Kamrupa was the head of state of the state of Kamrupa who served in office on the pleasure of the President who was the appointer. The functions of the governor included:
- discharging the day-to-day affairs of the state.
- maintain law and order and general administration of the state.
- communicate and brief the President about activities in the state.
- appoint the chief minister and other officials upon approval of the President.
