The Kingdom of Pilatia, located on Cabrera Island in the Balearic Islands, Spain it has an area of 1,318 hectares. The micronation was established on May 25, 2022. It aims to foster a close-knit community founded on the principles of justice and equality.

Led by King Danyl I, Pilatia's government seeks to implement a governance model based on mutual aid and respect among citizens. This model, known as the "monarchy with two thrones," involves both the king and the people in state affairs, with both parties holding powers.

Pilatia is actively engaged in the micronational movement, striving to establish diplomatic relations and contribute to a shared vision of independence and creativity among micronations.

Etymology

Pilatia comes from the Dune of Pilat in Gironde (France) where King Danyl I declared independence and created Pilatia.

In Arabic Pilatia (which is called "Bilatia" in arabic) resembles the Arabic word "Bilad" which means country / homeland, this word has also been a basis for the name "Pilatia", which can create a feeling of hospitality for the citizens.

History

Pre-pilatian history

The island of Cabrera and the larger islets have been visited by the main Mediterranean civilisations: Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Byzantines, Romans and Arabs. The island owes its name to the mountain goats that once inhabited it, now extinct.

Legend has it that the Carthaginian general Aníbal Barca was born on one of the surrounding islets: Conejera .

It is also said that in the Middle Ages there was a monastery in Cabrera, closed because its monks "... subjected their lives to various crimes, which show that, more than serving God, they were fighting, and we say this with a shout, in favour of the old enemy" ( Saint Gregory the Great , Epistle XIII, 47), although there are no archaeological remains. Possible remains of the monastery were discovered in 2004.

The island then served, for some time, as a base for Mediterranean pirates and, at the end of the 14th century, instead to be part of Majorca's defense system with the construction of a fort destinated to fight against them.

In 1770, Soliman Ben Mohammed Kara Baghli, the ancestor of the current king and who have a link with the island at that time, was arrested by the Spanish authorities he was enslaved in Spain until, the private treasurer of the dey, would then request support from France for the redemption in Spain of Soliman Ben Mohammed Kara Baghli.

In 1809, Cabrera was used as an internment (or concentration) camp for French prisoners during the Peninsular War or Spanish War of Independence. With insufficient food and no care, only 3,600 men (out of approximately 9,000 imprisoned) survived what is considered by some historians to be one of the earliest known concentration camps in history.

As the memoirs of General de Marbot relate, after the capitulation of Baylen on July 18, 1808, nearly 10,000 men from General Dupont's army were first piled up for several months on pontoons stationed in the harbor of Cadiz; but an epidemic fever made such ravages among them that the Spanish authorities, fearing that Cadiz was infested with it, relegated the survivors in 1809 to the desert island of Cabrera, which had no house, water or food. The ensign Louis Pujol, responsible for repatriating the survivors, left a poignant account of the dramatic living conditions he discovered there.

In 1916, German submarines landed there, resupplied by the companies of the Spanish smuggler Juan March, causing heavy losses to the allies in the Mediterranean. The private owner was then expropriated: the island then becomes entirely military.

In 1936, a damaged Republican seaplane was captured by the Nationalist army. Cabrera serves as a base for the protagonists of the Civil War. Nearly four hundred anarchist militiamen landed there on August 13, 1936, in view of the Republican landing in Majorca, on August 16. The B-3 and B-4 submarines, initially coming from their base in Mahon, participated, with the Italian air forces, in defeating the Republican landing in Porto Cristo on August 16, 1936, then docked in Cabrera on September 1.

On April 1, 1944, a Luftwaffe Dornier Do 217, coming from Istres, crashed at sea after a mechanical breakdown. One of the crew members is buried in Cabrera Cemetery.

The island was then used as a military drill camp until 1986.

Pilatian history

On May 25, 2022, the first King of Pilatia declared the independence of the Kingdom of Pilatia and designated the Banc d'Arguin as its main territory. On May 31, the Republic of Corsia decided to establish diplomatic relations with the Kingdom of Pilatia, becoming the first diplomatic relationship in Pilatian history. After the discover by the King that one of the his ancestors was in the past the owner of the Cabrera Islands (many of which were now almost abandoned), decides to annex them as Pilatian territory, still being aware of the diplomatic conflict between Spain and Algeria for these islands . After the annexation, the King's uncle, at the time in power of another micronation, decided to invade Pilatia, ending, after some negotiations, with the uncle decision to giving back Pilatia's independence.

In May 2023, the King changed the flag of the country with the reason being that the "Fleur-de-lys" (present on the previus flags) represented the Old french royal Family, who had no link with the Pilatian history or Royal family, changing to a modified version of the symbol (with the add of a crecent between it), created by him to represent the power (the Monarch, currently the King) and all wisdom and foresight. On 2 May 2023, was also started to be writted the first version of the constitution, to be then finally finished on four days later.

On 6 June 2023, was launched by the King, after many months of waiting, the "Alliance project" of Pilatia, with the objective of increasing Pilatian diplomacy; Pilatia joined the Mediterranean Cooperation Council and the Micronational Assembly. On 12 June 2023, the Kingdom of Pilatia formalizes a new flag and new coat of arms made by Fraild D., who was then decorated, on this occasion, with the Pilatian National Order of Merit. On 21 July 2023 The King of Pilatia signed the Treaty of York, a friendship treaty with the Kingdom of the Habibas Islands

from August 10, the kingdom set up a discord server with the aim of having more members and improving its diplomatic relations a website (still under development) began creation later.

Since January 10, 2024 Pilatia has resumed activity and resumed its diplomatic relations. an alliance called O.C.M.F was born with the initiative of other French-speaking micronations.

Politics and government

The Kingdom of Pilatia is a parliamentary and direct monarchy, currently headed by King Danyl I "precursor", who ascended the throne at the founding of the kingdom in 2022. The Pilaiti, the Parliament of Pilatia, is made up of 20 elected deputies, who are elected by the citizens. A government of five ministers manages day-to-day affairs.

The Kingdom of Pilatia reconciles real monarchy and parliamentary powers, but unlike most other constitutional monarchies, its constitution, in parallel with the parliament, grants the King some legislative, executive, judiciary , diplomacy, honorific and Military Powers (the powers of the king remain in the minority even if it is in several sections).

The founding King took inspiration from the Liechtenstein government system for the government system of Pilatia.
