Grýttlund, officially the Kingdom of Grýttlund, was a European micronation located in Battle, East Sussex. The country was founded by an Englishman named King Sebastian I, in early 2021 and was created off of the basis of the revival of the medieval Kingdom of Sussex. The kingdom speaks English and French, but has previously used the aforementioned languages, along with Grýttonic, a constructed language based off of Old English.

History

Background

The founder of Grýttlund had always been interested in nations, and experimented with a micronation called the Kingdom (also Tsardom, and Republic, as respective points in time) of Onoland. This lasted from 2016-2019, but became defunct due to the lack of interest. During the third lockdown enforced by the United Kingdom, he came to the conclusion that to fill time, he would create a successor nation, which became Grýttlund.

Foundation

On the 9th of January, 2021, Grýttlund began proclaiming nationhood under the name 'Stoffulas'. It soon changed names. King Sebastian I was coronated April 4, 2022.

Culture

National Symbols

The flag of the Kingdom of Grýttlund was a cross flag, containing a cruciform of gold, on top of a field of a dark blue. This flag took inspiration from three Kingdoms: England; Sussex; and Mercia. It used the shape of the flag of England, the nation that Grýttlund had seceded from. It used the colours of the flags of Sussex, and of Mercia. It is also representative of the Catholicity of the country, which is evident from the Cross shape.

Mythology and folklore

In Grýttlund, there was an irreligious belief in the supernatural creatures, namely that of vampires, elves, fairies, and dragons. There is no proven sightings of these beasts, but several privately written and unreleased poems. It is Grýttonic custom to leave a piece of bread, usually homemade, out in the back garden of your house every month for the Elvish, as to protect your house from the wicked. It is also custom to not ever touch a Amanita muscaria mushroom, as this is where fairies supposedly live, and angering a fairy will bring torment onto your first born son. The state condemns these beliefs as superstition and promotion is illegal.

King Sebastian I

Aeldadbe Cynintt , commonly known as King Sebastian I, was born 20 January 2005, and was the founder and reigning King of Grýttlund. He was coronated on the 4th April 2022. He took the name Sebastian, after St. Sebastian. St. Sebastian is also patron saint of the King. His name in Grýttonic is Aeldadbe.

Culture

The national identity of Grýttlund was the Anglo-Saxon culture and heritage in which the whole society is based on. It takes several elements of their mythology, tales, and every day actions, as a foundation for Grýttonic life. For example, jewellery worn by the King during ceremonies is similar to that of an Anglo-Saxon king. Mead is the national drink, which is commonly drunk out of horns.

Religion and Spirituality

Grýttlund is, by law, a Roman Catholic state. While this is the state religion, the vast majority of citizens are agnostic, or deistic. It follows Catholic moral teaching, in law, about how a country should be run. It does not recognise Jorge Mario Bergoglio, commonly known as Pope Francis, as the true Roman Pontiff, but rather that there has been a lengthened formal vacancy of the Holy See since the death of Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli, more commonly known as Pope Pius XII, in October 1958. The state, by law, holds to the Thesis of Cassiciacum.

Government and Politics

Governmental System

The Kingdom of Grýttlund was based off of the same form of government as the Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms were. The most powerful, and important, member of society is the King (Cynintt) - who has the power to rule over the whole Kingdom. Below him are the Earls (Eorlþ). They are appointed by the King. In the third tier of society are the Thanes (Þegns), whom own some land but are under submission to an Earl, who submits to the King. Below are the peasants (ceorlðs), whom have no noble title, but are not homeless or owned. Unlike Anglo-Saxon England, there are no slaves owned in Grýttlund, due to insufficient population, and also base laws in the United Kingdom, along with the ethics of the Catholic faith.

The King rules, and has direct authority, over the whole Kingdom, including all Earldoms (Eorlþoms). The primary Earldom is Nǣrþanhýrst.

The kingdom does not follow male primogeniture in regards to Royal succession. During the life of a king, he will name his successor, which typically is his eldest son, however can be any member of the Kingdom. If a king does not name a successor, the throne instantly goes to his eldest son. If he does not have a son, the throne goes to the Earl of Nǣrþanhýrst.

Foreign Relations

Grýttlund was very open to public relations. They have public relations with the Kingdom of Nortenland, and also Graecia.
