The Kingdom of Cania, commonly called Cania, is a self declared sovereign state often known as a micronation by external observers. Founded on 21 February 2023, the nation is made up of five ceremonial provinces - each overseen by a Lord Lieutenant.
The kingdom is under a unitary absolute monarchy based on divine right theory. Despite this the nation still maintains a bicameral parliament, consisting of a House of Assembly and House of Lords, and a Prime Minister as chair of the council of ministers and head of government. The current monarch is King Arthur I.
History
The kingdom of Cania was established on 21 February 2023. It was founded by first monarch, King Arthur I. A number of national institutions were established including all current major departments in the cabinet, as well as the monarchy and Prime Ministry.
Government and Politics
Since establishment, the nation has been under a unitary absolute monarchy.
Monarchy
The monarchy of Cania is vested with absolute power based on divine right theory. The monarch plays a significant role in national politics. They do a lot of ruling over the nation, typically with the input of the privy council and the government. However, the monarch also can and typically delegates some powers to the government and the council of ministers to rule on their behalf.
Prime Minister
The prime minister of Cania is the head of government. They chair the council of ministers and are appointed by the monarch. They nominate all cabinet ministers for appointment to the monarch. They are usually a member of parliament and have overall responsibility for the day-to-day oversight of the government as well as the nation as a whole. They typically govern alongside or on behalf of the monarch.
Parliament
Parliament is the primary legislature of the kingdom. It is bicameral and is made up of the House of Assembly, sometimes known as the Assembly, and the House of Lords.
The assembly is made up of representatives known as Members of Parliament. The prime minister and council of ministers typically sit in the assembly but can sometime originate from the house of lords.
The house of lords is made up of senior ministers in the Church of Cania, as well as members of nobility whom have been appointed to the house by the monarch. Sometimes provincial Lord Lieutenants are granted observer seats in the house of lords where they are able to raise important points about their provinces to help better the law making process.
Both houses have an important role in the governing of the nation and the government can originate from either house, based on who the monarch appoints to the premiership.
Administrative Regions
The nation is made up of five ceremonial provinces - Astad, Mespa, Escain, Zaclus and Feshos. Each province is overseen by ceremonial Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff. Both offices in each province are appointed by the monarch, typically on the advice of the privy council or parliament.
The Lord Lieutenant of each province is responsible for representing the monarch in each of the provinces and overseeing certain regional operations. The High Sheriff is the monarch's representative in judicial matters in each province and they also typically aid the Lord Lieutenant.
Culture
Culture is important to Canian society. English serves as the national language as well as the most widely spoken language. The national motto is "Service Before Self" which can be seen reflected in national attitudes towards contributions to the nation in some situations.
Christianity serves as the national religion. The Church of Cania serves as the national church, which is presided over by the Archbishop of Cania who is appointed by the monarch. As a result, a proportion of national holidays are religious holidays. The patron saint of the kingdom is Saint Luke.
Geography
The kingdom claims some land in the Lake District of the United Kingdom and an area of Antarctica as a crown dependency. The kingdom also claims the land below its citizens feet and the sky above their heads.
