The Republic of Drew Star Line (previously known as the Starland Republic, and often referred to as DSL) was a new-country project[1] that claimed the Kermadec Islands,[2] a subtropical archipelago North of New Zealand. Although its final land claims were never settled by its citizens, DSL did maintain a substantial amount of control over several territories throughout most of its existence within the state of North Carolina, United States. DSL was created by six individuals, who were known collectively as the Founders, on 13 September 2005. The micronation collapsed on 7 September 2017, following the abdication of its last Vice President, Jennifer Veras, and the departure of high ranking members of DSL, including Founders Suzuki Leōcor and Tegan Paris. It was officially succeeded by Leōcor's fantasy micronation, Sunþrawegaz Kuningadōmas.

The Republic of Drew Star Line (DSL) was the 15th recognized incarnation of what is often called the Drew Star Line Legacy, or simply the Legacy. DSL's unique name was derived from its origins as a proposed space launch vehicle manufacturer, Andrew's Starliner Company, founded by Suzuki Leōcor. When Leōcor and several of her friends reconfigured the purpose of the company in mid-September 2005, the name was slightly modified due to fears that an acronym of ASC or ASL may have been mispronounced as a derogatory word. The name of the micronation has since changed multiple times over the course of its history in a series of three defined phases of activity, which were separated by periods of inactivity. These phases are known, in order, as DSL-Starland, San Dover, and DNS-Kermadecia.

The citizens of DSL were often referred to as Starliners or Dogs. The latter term derives from a small yet significant struggle for dominance between the six Founders and the rest of the populace in late 2007, in which a pseudo-military called "Drew's Hell Dogs" was raised by the Founders. Citizens were further classified as either being Old Dogs or New Dogs, depending on what phase of the micronation they joined. Old Dogs were typically given more rights than other citizens, and could have been be viewed as the nobility of the country. However, this caste system was slowly eradicated between 2012 and 2016. Starliners were also unique for predominately referring to their micronation as a project or a club, and despite claiming sovereignty, they rarely referred to themselves as micronationalists or being apart of a micronation. Leōcor had coined the phrase "ultra-serious micro-to-macronation" to describe DSL, but this terminology never caught on.

The various entities and their respective phases are presented in the table below. It should be noted that the New Pamlico Federation, the Republic of Starland, Hiraeth, and Sunþrawegaz Kuningadōmas are independent of the main sphere, but are included in the table for succinctness.

Stone implements of a Polynesian type have been found on Raoul Island, and there is evidence of a 14th Century Maori settlement there. Maori tradition also holds that the first settlers to the island were from the canoes Aotea and Kurahaupō, who referred to Raoul as Rangitāhua. However, the island was found to be uninhabited when French explorer Antoine Raymond Joseph de Bruni d'Entrecasteaux first sighted it on 16 March 1793, as leader of an expedition conducted by the Recherche and the Espérance, and it is named after his quartermaster, Joseph Raoul. The island has been briefly inhabited many times by colonists and shipwrecked sailors, most notably by Thomas Bell and his family from 1878 to 1913.

Raoul Island was formally annexed by New Zealand in 1886, following fears of German expansion in the Pacific. The Germans also used Raoul Island as a safe haven for the commerce raider SMS Wolf during World War I. There has been no civilian population since the last inhabitants were evacuated from Raoul Island in 1914, but a small group of volcanologists and New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) workers have maintained a permanent station there since 1939.

Formation and Early History: Sep 2005 to Sep 2006

The Republic of Drew Star Line (DSL) traces its origins to a space launch company proposed by Suzuki Leōcor in early September 2005, known as Andrew's Starliner Company. The original concept was to create zeppelin-like space shuttles that could be launched into orbit from a magnetized rail, and vertically land at another point following reentry by utilizing helium filled tanks to decrease the craft's density. This idea was quickly abandoned by the then nine-year-old Leōcor, mainly due to growing disinterest from its creator.

DSL was reformed a few days later as a club by Leōcor and five of her friends: Diego Bell, Caleb Flaville, Jericho Gilmore, Tegan Paris, and Justin Zeller. The six of them met after school in the gymnasium of Roger R. Bell Elementary in Havelock, North Carolina, and formulated a small charter outlining the club's leadership, policies and goals. The original purpose as stated in DSL's charter was to create a small town in the United States for the close-knit group of friends to reside in, and as such this early period of the project's history is more akin to a club than a micronation. It was in this meeting that the name Andrew's Starliner Company was slightly modified to Drew Star Line, following fears that an acronym of ASC or ASL may have been mispronounced as an elicit word. The founding date is maintained as Tuesday, 13 September 2005, although the exact date was never actually transcribed, and could be any day between 12 and 16 September. 13 September was chosen during preparations for the club's one-year anniversary in September 2006 by then President Zeller because he was "pretty sure it {the founding} happened on a Tuesday."

A President-Vice President system was set up among the Founders during the meeting, and they chose Bell for President, and Leōcor for Vice President. Their inauguration is maintained as having occurred on 15 September 2005, but as the only record for the event was listed as "two {school} days following DSL's founding," this date could actually be anywhere between 14 and 20 September. Bell and Leōcor were each to serve a one-year term, ending on 1 September 2006. However, Bell's family moved halfway through his term, so on 1 March 2006, Leōcor inherited the Presidency for what would be the first of her 16 terms. Bell's leaving would set a new policy of six-month terms, beginning and ending on every 1 March and 1 September.

Both Bell and Leōcor presided over a calm period of steady growth. Membership had expanded from just six to 27 in just ten months, and it was during their tenures that a sense of national identity was beginning to develop. The national colors of green, orange and yellow were first unfurled on the DSL flag, the palette having been inspired by one of Leōcor's favorite dishes: pasta salad. DSL had also made its first transition from a club to a micronation, by claiming the playground equipment at Roger R. Bell Elementary. However, there was growing discontent among the club's members. During this time, only the Founders could make laws or run for executive office, policies that were becoming increasingly unpopular by the end of Leōcor's first term in September 2006.

The Golden Era: Sep 2006 to Mar 2007

The Keith Woods, DSL's first true land claims, were made by then President Justin Zeller on 13 September 2006.

Suzuki Leōcor was succeeded as President by Justin Zeller on 1 September 2006, with Jericho Gilmore taking over the vacated office of the Vice Presidency the same day. One of Zeller's campaign promises that helped him get elected was to democratize DSL by granting all citizens the right to hold public office. This measure was strongly opposed by the other Founders, who worked tirelessly to derail Zeller's efforts to make DSL a democratic republic. The increasingly hostile argument between the executive and legislative branches soon blossomed into a full-blown conflict, with Zeller leading a pro-democracy militia against his fellow Founders. Gilmore in turn led a militia in support of the oligarchic republic, a composite group containing the four remaining Founders and several citizens who were promised Founder-like status for their support. Gilmore's army became known as Drew's Hell Dogs, and on 16 December it met battle with Zeller's militia. The resulting clash, which saw only a few minor injuries on either side, was a resounding success for Drew's Hell Dogs. Zeller was impeached as President of DSL, and was banished and disgraced from the ranks of the micronation.

For many years afterwards, DSL had maintained that Zeller was a radical who went against the wishes of the people and the charter. Several propaganda campaigns by the victorious Drew's Hell Dogs sought to villainize Zeller and distance themselves from their fellow Founder. Beginning in 2010, however, Zeller's name began to be cleared after his honorable actions in the Rice Lane War, and on 16 December 2012 a full apology was given by Leōcor and several former militants for "branding a man with an undying passion for democracy as an enemy." Today, Zeller is often remembered as a progressive-minded individual with a knack for expanding DSL's territorial horizons. Zeller is responsible for establishing solid control over the micronation's first true land claims to a 0.4 ha (1.1 ac) sliver of forest known as the Keith Woods, and for sending the first expeditions into what would become known the Rice Lane Woods. He also established the policy of keeping detailed historical records, something that had not been a priority for DSL's first year of existence.

A corner of the collapsed New Fort Drew, originally constructed as part of then President Jericho Gilmore's military reforms.

Zeller was immediately succeeded by his Vice President, Gilmore. One of Gilmore's primary ambitions was to turn DSL from what amounted to a social club into an actual micronation. One of his first acts was to turn Drew's Hell Dogs into DSL's first ever military force, which eventually became known as the Starland Army, with the primary task of guarding the Keith Woods and the tentative territory of the Rice Lane Woods. In order for the newfangled Starland Army to do its job, Gilmore raised funds to buy two metal sheds to serve as guard posts. The first was constructed in the Keith Woods adjacent to Leōcor's house, and became known as Fort Drew. Fort Drew became DSL's first capital, replacing the playground of Roger R. Bell Elementary School as the project's primary meeting area. The original shed that composed Fort Drew was replaced in mid-2014, and today still serves as DSL's de facto capital. The second shed was built in the Rice Lane Woods, and became known as New Fort Drew. The Rice Lane Woods would be largely ignored for the first two years of Leōcor's second term as President, and as such New Fort Drew was abandoned in early March 2007. Several expeditions were sent in the vicinity to relocate the derelict shed, but it wasn't until April 2017 that it was recovered. New Fort Drew was found to have collapsed in a dense part of the Rice Lane Woods, which is likely the reason it had eluded recovery for so long. It is believed that several relics from DSL's first year of existence may be housed beneath the rubble, and there are currently several proposals to excavate the site.

Gilmore also instituted DSL's first ever currency. Known as the Rook, it was composed of polished spheres of hematite. The rook had hardly any face value and was rarely used, but it was instated by Gilmore to make DSL "more sovereign-like." This nationalistic policy of Gilmore's culminated in his farewell address on 1 March 2007, when he renamed DSL as the Starland Republic (sometimes misspelled the Starline Republic), and declared it independent of the United States of America are all other foreign entities. Gilmore's vision for the future of the project, coupled with his sweeping reforms have dubbed his time as President as DSL's Golden Age. This Golden Age has recently been expanded to include Zeller's Presidency as well, in recognition of his democratizing efforts and territorial expansion. Today these two men's legacies are remembered every 1 March in a celebration conversely called both Gilmore's and Starland Day.

The First Starland Republic: Mar 2007 to Aug 2009

Suzuki Leōcor at the beginning of her multi-term Presidency in the summer of 2007.

Suzuki Leōcor was inaugurated as the fifth President of DSL on 1 March 2007, beginning her historically long reign over the micronation. She inherited a stable administration with a growing population, which was bolstered by the passage of the Conduct of Drew's Elected (CODE), the project's first true constitution that was originally drafted by Jericho Gilmore during his Presidency, but was not passed until 17 March. Under the CODE, Starland citizens were for the first time allowed to serve on the National Council, being elected to fill in the vacancies left by the departure of Gilmore, Justin Zeller and Diego Bell.

Leōcor immediately began shifting Starland's focus away from the Rice Lane Woods and instead to expanding the project's hold over smaller territories such as the Keith Woods. She started a policy of giving high-ranking military positions for citizens who gave land to the government. Through this tactic Starland gained control of the Omokon (2007), the Bamboo Forest (2008) and the Western Wastes (2008). Conflict over the control of one of these territories, the Omokon, began a long struggle for supremacy between DSL and several other entities that eventually came to called the Forest Wars. The Omokon was given to Starland by Zachary Pruitt in June 2007, but he was not content with being given a simple generalship, desiring instead a seat on the National Council. On 5 August he recanted his offer and set up his own micronation, Zachland. A few skirmishes were fought between Starland and Zachland, but by November an agreement had been made. Pruitt would give back the Omokon to Starland and pay 100 USD of the damages he caused, and in return he would be granted Caleb Flaville's seat on the National Council when he moved at the end of the year.

Starland's early territories, and the focus of the Forest Wars.

Some of Zachland's supporters did not recognize the outcome of the First Forest War, claiming that the treaty between Pruitt and Starland did not take into account promises that were made to them by Pruitt himself. Two of Pruitt's generals, the twin brothers Kevin and Ryan Glass, took over Zachland on 11 Nov 2007. The Glass brothers began expanding Zachland's control into the Keith Woods, setting up their main base of operations just 90 m (295 ft) away from Starland's capital, Fort Drew. For the first few months of the renewed conflict (the Second Forest War) there were only a handful of short clashes between the rival military patrols in the Keith Woods. It was during this time that one of Leōcor's generals, Michael Layton, managed to push the Glass brothers apart. Using the twins' younger sister as a wedge, Layton managed to convince Ryan Glass to split from Zachland and form Glassland, taking over his brother's territory in the Kieth Woods in the process. On 1 March 2007, the day Layton became the next Vice President, Glassland declared war on both Starland and Zachland, instigating the Third Forest War.

The Third Forest War saw the addition of a new and battle-changing weapon in Starland's arsenal: the bamboo staff. Sharpened sticks had been a hallmark of the previous two Forest Wars and the earlier conflict between Justin Zeller and the Founders, but such weapons were difficult to make and often broke in intensive combat. But on 1 March 2008, Charles Nay ceded his family's land to Starland in return for Layton's now vacant generalship. This consisted of two territories: the Western Wastes, a treeless plain in the center of Havelock; and the Bamboo Forest, home to hundreds of fifty-foot bamboo trees. Equipping the Starland Army with hundreds of sturdy bamboo staffs in a relatively short time span greatly increased the country's ability to wage war against the dual threats of Zachland and Glassland. Nay's freshly armed force struck first at the Omokon, overrunning Kevin Glass' defenses and forcing the collapse of Zachland. Most of Zachland's army was reincorporated into Glassland by April, when the Glass brothers made amends and once again became co-regents of their micronation. The twin brothers began a policy of avoiding pitched battles, relocating their base of operations throughout the summer to prevent another major loss like the Omokon. On 2 August the Glass brothers initiated a massive strike on Starland.

The Western Entrance, Starland's main entry point into the Rice Lane Woods.

Glassland's army was split into two: Kevin Glass would lead an assault on Fort Drew, while his brother Ryan Glass sent an invasion force into the Bamboo Forest. In this way it was hoped that the heads of Starland's military and their primary arms supply could be cutoff in one foul swoop. Leōcor and her generals had good intelligence on Glassland's aims, however, and three forces were created: Fort Drew would be guarded by Leōcor herself, while Layton held on to a large group of reinforcements that would come to Leōcor's aide after the battle commenced. The third group, under Nay, saw the first bout of action when it ran into Ryan Glass's army crossing the Western Wastes. Nay's detachment annihilated his adversary's force, and Ryan Glass was taken prisoner. Leōcor's group was not so lucky. Kevin Glass's army, equipped with mace and metal pipes, hammered Fort Drew's defenders into submission. While trying to prevent the enemy from getting inside the capitol building itself, Leōcor was knocked unconscious and Kevin Glass personally set Starland's flag alight. Upon seeing the smoke from his rally point, Layton commanded his group to come to Leōcor's rescue. Kevin Glass had not anticipated Starlandic reinforcements, and ordered a hasty retreat back to Glassland's main base. In the confusion of the retreat, however, Kevin Glass ran right into Nay's returning detachment, and was taken prisoner along with his brother. Three days later, on 5 August, the Glass brothers signed a peace treaty that formally ended the year-long Forest Wars.

One of the reasons why the Rice Lane Woods fell out of favor during this time was that there was no viable entrance into the territory, being surrounded on all sides by a 5 m (16 ft) escarpment into the Shop Branch River.

Matthew Perry, the sixth and final President of DSL.

Drew Star Line (DSL) was a republic, and was led by a President who served as the head of state. The last President was Matthew Perry, who was sworn in on 3 July 2017 to finish out his predecessor, Suzuki Leōcor's, 2-year term. Perry managed to reign before agreeing to a collapse DSL on 3 September 2017. The President's main responsibility was to promote DSL's interests at home and abroad, and was therefor the chief diplomat and the leader of the armed forces in times of war. To complete these tasks the President had an advisory committee composed of five positions: Secretary of Defense, Secretary of Internal Affairs, Secretary of the Kermadec Islands, Secretary of State, and Secretary of the Treasury. The President was also assisted by the head of government, the Vice President, who was slated to succeed the President in the event of death, impeachment or retirement. There was no Vice President when DSL collapsed, as Jennifer Veras abdicated on 1 August 2017 after serving less than a month in office. The electoral system utilized by DSL had failed to yield a successor to the Vice Presidency before the micronation's demise.

The legislative body of DSL was the National Council, and it contained 5 councilors, each of whom were elected to 2-year terms and were overseen by the Vice President. The main responsibility of the National Council was to create bills in DSL, known as Plans. Any citizen of DSL could propose a legislation, but only the National Council could vote on such a proposal becoming a Plan. If the National Council approved a proposal and thus created a Plan, done so with a 3:5 vote, the Plan then went to the President for their approval. If the President approved the Plan, it will then become an official DSL law. However, the President had the power to veto a Plan in which case the National Council would need a unanimous vote to overturn. The Vice President was responsible for breaking any tied vote in the National Council.

All national elections began on 5 November of every even numbered year, and ended on 2 December of the same year. The election for President and Vice President was as follows: All citizens above the age of 16 were put on the ballot, all of whom were also required to vote in the election; The 2 citizens with the greatest number of votes at the end of the election became President and Vice President respectively. The same process was also used to elect representatives to the National Council, except that only eligible citizens from their respective Districts were on the ballot. If a person was elected into an office that they did not wish to serve in they were allowed to step down, or if a person currently in office died, retired or was impeached, then the person with the next highest number of votes assumed that office.

DSL's capital city had been determined to be located in Sunshine Valley, a steep-sloped gully bordered to the North by the Moumoukai Range, to the West by the Prospect Range, to the South by the Mahoe Range, and to the East by South Bay. The area was chosen for its seclusion and easy access to the sea. It lay at the fork of 2 unnamed freshwater creeks and was in a heavily forested section of the island. The capital city was awaiting a National Council measure to be given an official name, the former name of "Drewstarcity" holding only de facto status. The only name that had been proposed prior to the collapse was "Bellerton," a homage to both Founders Diego Bell and Justin Zeller.

Below is a list of Presidents/leaders and Vice Presidents/second-in-commands of the main branch of the DSL Legacy (numbered), as well as the leaders of New Pamlico (NP), Republic of Starland (RS), Hiraeth (HI), and Sunþrawegaz (SK).

Foreign relations

DSL was an isolationist micronation when it collapsed, officially refusing to partake in any formal diplomatic endevours. However, behind the scenes DSL actively engaged with several micronations, among the most prominent being Pacem, Zenrax, Hodiny, and the Greater National Socialist Reich. These four nations, along with DSL, were founding members of the Kermadec Union (KU), an organization devoted to giving micronations the tools they needed to become macronations. The KU managed to last nine months before disintegrating, following the collapse of Hodiny and the growing conflict between DSL and the micronational community. Leōcor still maintains that the KU was an excellent idea that was unfortunately created at the most inopportune time, and since the KU's demise there have been several attempts by the original KU members and others outside of the organization to revive its charter.

Leōcor did set up the Skype chatroom "Drew and Pals," in which several micronationalists were present. Since her departure from DSL, Leōcor still maintained the Skype chatroom for the new nation of Sunþrawegaz, under the new name "Drunkiz Gadurō." Two former citizens of DSL are still active users in Drunkiz Gadurō, as well representatives from 16 currently active micronations

Military and law enforcement

DSL did not have military or police force by the time of its collapse, although it did have a standing army between 2006 and 2013. This military force was originally designed to counter then President Justin Zeller's efforts to democratize the micronation, something his fellow Founders did not wish to

This proposed armed force would be commanded by the Vice President in times of peace and by the President in times of war. The Secretary of Defense is responsible for setting up DSL's military, although this position has been left vacant since Cheyenne Talavan's departure on 9 August 2017.

National symbols

DSL's mascot, Starr the Fennec Fox.

DSL's national bird and animal is the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet (Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae), a species native only to Kermadec Islands. A mostly bright green bird with blue highlights and a red crown, the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet was hunted to extinction on the Kermadecs by loose domesticated cats. For 172 years the surviving Parakeets lived exclusively on Raoul Island's offshore islets, until finally returning naturally to Raoul Island in 2008. They have yet to return to the rest of the Kermadec Islands, however.

The national mascot of DSL is a Fennec Fox by the name of Starr. She was designed by Prince Xavier of Novapara at Leōcor's request, and was officially adopted on 13 February 2017. Starr is mainly used in the Department of Internal Affairs' public reach-out programs, which are aimed at raising money and enlisting citizens, as well as being the avatar for the DSL sponsored Skype chatroom "Drew and Pals."

DSL's national anthem is a lyric-less song called the "Legacy March." It was composed by music director Josh Mancell for the 2004 video game Jak 3. It was chosen because of the cultural influence the game has had on the Drew Star Line Legacy.

The national seal is another DSL symbol influenced by the Jak and Daxter video game series. It is known within the game world as the Seal of the House of Mar, a royal lineage and a recurring motif throughout the series. In real life it is a complex interpretation of the Maori life symbol, Koru. It is for these two reasons, both cultural and historical, that this symbol was chosen as DSL's national seal. It also contains the colors of the Legacy: green, orange and yellow.

DSL's flag also utilizes the micronation's national seal, with 36 alternating rays of green, orange and yellow emanating from the center, representing each of the six Founders of DSL six times. The flag then spirals outward halfway the edges in a darker shade of the base colors, also in the shape of the national seal. The flag was created by Leōcor in early 2017, and was adopted on 13 January. Leōcor, when asked about the flag's radical design, said that she wanted DSL to have a "flag to remember."

One of Raoul Island's picturesque beaches.

Drew Star Line (DSL) lacked an economic base, mainly due to the fact that the micronation's claimed lands were not settled before its eventual demise. The Kermadec Islands abound in fish, tropical lumber, and volcanic glass, which would likely have been harvested to form a small export economy. The Kermadecs claimed to also include several large, picturesque beaches and could support a substantial tourist industry. Leōcor often stressed the need for the micronation to be entirely self-sufficient, due to the fact that the first settlers would more than likely have been cut off from the outside world for an indeterminable amount of time.

DSL did have a determined currency. Called the Kermadec Dollar (Kollar), it was originally proposed as the official currency of the defunct Kermadec Union (KU). It was to be a series of weighted coins, ranging from 0.01 Kollars to 100 Kollars, and would have been made of a 90% silver base with a 10% gold inlaid. This currency was never minted, although preliminary designs were proposed within the National Council in early 2016. Had the micronation not collapsed, paper credits were to be issued sometime in 2020, and were slated to be replaced by the coinage in increments starting in 2025.

Drew Star Line (DSL) claims all 91 of the Kermadec Islands, a volcanic island chain located in the South Pacific, of which the main focus of the micronation's efforts is on Raoul Island, the largest and northernmost of the archipelago. Raoul Island is a heavily forested tropical island that is surrounded by dozens of small islets, all of which are claimed by DSL. The total land area of Raoul Island and its offshore islets is 29.38 km² (10.83 mi²), while the total land area for all of DSL's claims to the Kermadec Islands is 31.39 km² (12.12 mi²).

Raoul Island is anvil shaped, and is home to five principle mountain ranges and three volcanoes. The highest point on the island is Mt. Moumoukai at 516 m (1693 ft), and it overlooks Raoul Island's central volcanic crater. The crater houses two flooded calderas, called Green Lake and Blue Lake. Both are active volcanoes, the last eruption occurring from Green Lake on 17 March 2006, which was responsible for one death and the evacuation of all New Zealand DOC workers from the island. The area of forest around the two calderas is known as Devastation Ridge.

The third volcano is Denham Caldera, located on the eastern side of the island. It is believed to have destroyed over half of Raoul Island in around 200 BCE. The explosion flooded the caldera and in so doing created Denham Bay, the largest bay on the island. The undersea volcano continues to erupt today, although without as much strength. Several of the islets off the eastern coast were also created by volcanic vents associated with the larger calderas.

The island has about one to two major (7.0 magnitude or higher) earthquakes a year, although can go for a short number of years without one. Minor earthquakes happen on an almost daily basis.

Raoul Island has three lakes. Blue and Green lakes are 117 ha (289 ac) and 16 ha (40 ac) respectively. Both are highly acidic, although Blue Lake is less so than Green, being able to support coral reefs but not fish. Blue Lake is up to 67 m (220 ft) deep, while Green Lake is up to 95 m (312 ft) deep. The third lake is called Tui, and at 0.5 ha (1 ac) it contains drinkable freshwater. The island also contains three freshwater springs and dozens of small, unnamed freshwater streams.

Raoul Island has 80 islets surrounding it, most of which are to the East and south of the main island, and are all collectively known to Starliners as the Eastern Isles. The Eastern Isles contain about 1% of DSL's claimed territory. The largest of the islets are the Meyer Islands, a steep sloped islet that rises up to 100 m (328 ft) above sea level. Meyer has subsequently fractured into forty-one pieces due to shore erosion, the largest of which is 0.10 km² (0.04 mi²). Other Eastern islets include Nugent Island (DSL's northernmost claim), Napier Island, Dayrell Island, Egeria Rock, and the Chanter Islands. The South Bay contains the Milne Islets and Dougall Rocks, which are both large coral reefs exposed to the air. Islets will occasionally form in and around Denham Bay, but they do not last more than a few decades before being eroded by the strong surf.

DSL also claims the other 4 major islands of the Kermadec Islands, known to Starliners as the Southern Kermadecs. They are, from north to south: Macauley, Cheeseman, Curtis and l'Esperance. Along with 6 offshore islets, the Southern Kermadecs have a land area of 3.34 km² (1.29 mi²). These steeped faced islands have been badly ravaged by goats left over from 19th century sailors to the point of complete deforestation. Native birds once so prevalent on the these islands, including DSL's national bird the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet, are locally extinct. Although the goats were removed by the 1980s, the attempted reforestation of the these islands has thus far failed. It is unclear what purpose the Southern Kermadecs will serve DSL in the future, as various ideas have been proposed, such as farmland, a national park, and facilities for the space-faring Project Red Lightning.

The Kermadec Islands have a humid subtropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round and a relatively even amount of annual participation per month. The islands are a Cfa on the Köppen climate classification.

Flora and fauna

The Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet, DSL's national bird.

The interior of the island is home to a dense forest of Norfolk Pines, Kermadec Pohutukawa and Nikau Palms. It is also the southernmost place in the world where Coconut Palms are known to grow wild. The island has no native mammals, although goats, domesticated cats and polynesian rats were brought to the island by Europeans. They caused significant damage to the native plant life and seabird population until their eradication 1986.

Raoul Island is home to ten native bird species, including the national bird of Drew Star Line (DSL), the Kermadec Red-Crowned Parakeet. Other birds include species of Harriers, Pukekos, Tuis, Terns, Petrels and Boobies. Raoul Island is listed as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International.

The waters off Raoul Island support coral reefs and hundreds of fish species, and is home to five of the world's seven sea turtle species. Black Gruppers, Drummers and Chocolate Seastars also inhabit the offshore coral reefs. The island and waters surrounding it are part of the Kermadec Islands Marine Reserve, New Zealand's largest marine reservation.

Raoul Island is also home to several invasive plant species that New Zealand's Department of Conservation (DOC) are currently in the process of removing, including the massive Norfolk Pine populations. Leōcor has stated repeatedly that DSL will take over the DOC's primary function on the island and will pass several measures to ensure the Kermadec Island's unique ecology.

No native trees or bird species reside on the other Kermadec Islands anymore, having been decimated by the introduction of goats, domesticated cats and polynesian rats. Although these invasive species were removed by 2008, lack of funding has so far prevented the attempted reforestation of these islands. One of the proposals currently being examined by the National Council would be to help reintroduce native species to the Southern Kermadecs and turn them into a national park.

DSL's national motto,"Nos arnoldus, fortis et audax" (Explorers are we, intrepid and bold) in Precurian English.

Starliner society was largely homogeneous, with no specific ruling class. There was no state-sponsored religion and no commonly held political ideology. The total population when the micronation collapsed was 5 citizens, 80% of which identified as male and 20% as female. The majority of the population (60%) was of European ancestry. The average age among the citizenry was 19.4 years, and the average time spent as a citizen of DSL was 7.6 years.

Historically, DSL had been home to 65 individuals, the most at any one time being 32 citizens in March 2007. Of that number, 52.3% identified as male and 47.7% as female. 76.9% of these individuals were of European ancestry, while 13.9% were of African ancestry and 9.2 were of Asian ancestry.

Drew Star Line (DSL) had non-discrimination policies that cover education, income level, race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, political ideology, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, and mental disabilities.

DSL's national language was Precurian English or Dogish, which was identical to American English except in one regard. Dogish used the Precurian alphabet developed by Naughty Dog, Inc. for the Jak and Daxter video game series. Dogish was rarely used, even in official government documents, and was only ceremonial.

DSL's official calendar used a combination of two different dating systems: the 13 month International Fixed Calendar in conjunction with Holocene Years. Thus, the Georgian date Tuesday 13 September 2005 became Wednesday 4 September 12005. This calendar was only used in official government documents, and the Georgian calendar was still used on a day to day basis by the majority of the populace.

Drew Star Line Legacy

DSL was part of a series of micronations known collectively as the Legacy (sometimes elongated to the Drew Star Line Legacy), an entity formed on 12 April 2013 to help facilitate the union between the Starland Republic and the New Pamlico Federation. The Legacy consisted of DSL and all of the nations that have been created by former citizens. The founding members of each Legacy micronation were part of a Legacy Board, which had the power to remove government officials from Legacy nations or incorporate one entity into another, all with a unanimous vote. Legacy nations with more than one founder, such as DSL, had all of their votes averaged out into one vote on the Board. The Legacy's last action occurred on 3 September 2017, when the majority of its members agreed to collapse DSL, a process that takes four days to complete. Currently, the only active micronations in the Legacy are Sunþrawegaz Kuningadōmas and Hiraeth, although the future of the Legacy as an organization remains in doubt without DSL's influence.
