McFarlane held many smaller positions during his micronational career. Only the major ones are listed above in this infobox.

Sir Hugh McFarlane is the founder and only monarch of the former Constitutional Empire of Starhigh and the Starhighan Commonwealth. McFarlane played an enormous role in developing these now-defunct entities during his tenure as monarch, resulting in improved domestic conditions and expansive interactions with the wider intermicronational community. In addition to the position of Emperor, McFarlane also served in several other roles within Starhigh, including Minister of Finance, Chief Ambassador to the Starhighan Commonwealth, Ambassador to Dorzhabad and Delegate to the Grand Unified Micronational. McFarlane also served the nation in his capacity as Chief Vote Counter within the Starhighan Electoral Commission, Editor in Chief of the Starhighan Post and General within the Starhighan defence forces. Following the terminal decline of Starhigh in 2013, McFarlane attempted to found a new nation known as Biarchy of Peribius. Unfortunately, this project did not prove tenable, however, leading to its prompt abandonment in the same year.

McFarlane resumed his participation in micronational affairs in 2015, gaining Mercian citizenship in 2016. McFarlane subsequently spent much of that year and 2017 participating in Mercian politics as the elected member for Loringia. This continued until the nation fell into inactivity, at which point McFarlane transitioned into a political career in Abelden which lasted well into 2018. Since 2016, McFarlane has also served as Governing Commission of New South Scotland.

McFarlane has a strong interest in foreign affairs, international security and domestic politics. He is currently completing a Bachelor of Security Studies course at the Sydney-based Macquarie University, which he hopes will propel him into a career in the Australian foreign service. McFarlane is also an active member of the Australian Liberal Party.

Early life

McFarlane was born in rural Australia and in his early years lived in a small town with approximately 2500 residents. Raised in a Christian family, McFarlane was exposed to religion from birth and formally became a Christian when he was ten years old. By the age of seven, McFarlane had taken a keen interest in history and politics. This was an interest that continued to grow in seriousness as McFarlane himself matured. This interest led McFarlane to declare his bedroom to be a sovereign nation (without being aware of the existence of a wider micronational community), making each of his stuffed toys citizens. This new nation adopted the name of Starhigh and as McFarlane grew older, Starhigh began to develop and grow in maturity, eventually becoming an active member of the intermicronational community. McFarlane's attendance at a local public school facilitated the recruitment of many of his classmates as Starhighan citizens.

Micronational career

During the early days of Starhigh, McFarlane's position as the nation's monarch afforded him absolute power over the fledgling state, but as more citizens joined, a parliament was established (in which was vested a considerable amount of power_. Due to crippling inactivity within this parliament, however, all power remained with the Emperor on a practical level. McFarlane played a critical role in creating Starhigh's governmental institutions, often holding roles within them. Examples of these institutions include the secret service, electoral commission and military. This resulted in a situation in which all power and responsibility was held by McFarlane and McFarlane alone. It, therefore, only became more difficult to delegate power to other citizens, contributing to the nation's inactivity. Due to poor record-keeping and lost databases, many of the roles which McFarlane occupied have been forgotten and lost to time.

McFarlane participated in the GUM and other sectors of the intermicronational community on behalf of the Starhighan Commonwealth. During this time he became friends with several influential community members, including Daniel Morris of Dorzhabad (who awarded McFarlane Dorzhabadic citizenship and vice versa) and Jonathan Augustus of Austenasia, who awarded McFarlane honorary subjectship and the decoration of Officer of the Austenasian Order in 2012. McFarlane assisted in the creation of four satellite states close to Starhigh at different times during the nation's history. These satellite states were known as Ace, Menace, Cyberfall and Yechstria (listed in order of their establishment).

Return to micronationalism

After the fall of Starhigh, McFarlane is known to have felt a desire to continue his career in micronationalism, which eventually led to him founding the short-lived Biarchy of Peribius with the former leader of Yechstria. Peribius was recognised as the successor state to Starhigh, however, it fell into inactivity shortly after its founding. After Peribius declined and became inactive, McFarlane left the micronational community for a time.

In late 2015, however, McFarlane made a re-entry onto the MicroWiki scene, declaring himself to be an "external observer of micronational affairs". In this capacity, he quietly paid attention to contemporary developments in the media without taking any part in proceedings until August, when he came out of his self-imposed retirement to publicly criticise the Verge Gazette. The criticism garnered McFarlane a lot of attention within the MicroWiki forums, eventually culminating in a significant interview for the Triumvirate Tribune. This attention also increased his micronational influence, leading to his appointment as the Ambassador for Paravia to Australia in September 2015. McFarlane was also promoted to Knight Commander of the Austenasian Order around this time for his efforts in assisting the Emperor of Austenasia with matters pertaining to New South Scotland. McFarlane's involvement in supporting Austenasian sovereignty over New South Scotland eventually led to his appointment as the Crown Dependency's Governing Commission the next year.

McFarlane further increased his profile within the micronational community in 2016, most notably when he authored a thread on the MicroWiki forums in order to discuss and explore the idea of micronational warfare. His research on the matter is considered to have been moderately fruitful. As his progress on the project began to stall due to outside commitments, however, Kit McCarthy drafted a report on micronational warfare that extensively cited McFarlane's research. McFarlane then suggested to McCarthy that the report be transferred into a treaty that eventually would be signed by nations in the community, and efforts began on drafting this document.

Mercia, Abelden and New South Scotland

Early in 2016, McFarlane gained citizenship within Mercia and quickly joined the People's Democratic Party and the Electoral Gorsedh. His influence within the nation increased when he and Brandon Wu published a joint statement criticising the actions of a rebel group that had briefly risen to notoriety, known as the Wibertsherne Reactionary Force. In May, McFarlane was elected to the Mercian Parliament as a PDP representative for Loringia, being added to the cabinet as Minister for Internal Affairs & Defence. McFarlane served in Parliament as both a member and minister before losing his portfolio after the National Liberal Party's electoral victory in September 2016. McFarlane continued to serve in Parliament as a member of the opposition until the nation fell into inactivity. He technically remained an elected member until emergency elections in September 2017.

McFarlane again participated in micronational politics in 2018, gaining citizenship in Abelden and quickly rising to the new heights in that nation's political system. McFarlane was the leader of the Abeldane Liberal Alliance and its successor the Abeldane Liberal National Alliance and Pragmatic Front. McFarlane remained in this position on a nominal basis until 2019, when it is understood that he informally withdrew from Abeldane politics.

In 2020, McFarlane authored a constitution for New South Scotland, which received imperial assent on the 22nd of April. He then went on to lead the Crown Dependency into its first era of genuine citizenship participation, resulting in the territory's first elections, the proclamation of political parties and the establishment of an independent press.

Awards and decorations

McFarlane held the position of Master Knight in each of the knightly orders that existed in Starhigh. He is also a Knight Commander of the Austenasian Order (KCA). More awards and decorations may have been bestowed during his early career, however, there is no documented evidence that would provide formal confirmation.
