The House of Abbott is the reigning royal house of the Grand Duchy of Eniarku. The house's name was inspired by Abbott Palace, the historic residence of the former king of Eniarku that in turn was named after a main thoroughfare in the previously semi-sovereign realm of the Duchy of Shaw. Established in its current form in 2015, the current head of the house Alexander has served as the sole Eniarkian monarch in various incarnations of the state, inheriting and consolidating patrimonial possessions and titles from both the House of Mjúkr-Danov and the House of Nölte. The titles, honours, and rules of succession of the family are controlled by the Law of the Grand Ducal House and decrees of the sovereign.

History

Eniarku has only had one monarch in the course of its history, Alexander, and his family have officially been members of three different ruling houses to date. During the time of the empire, the House of Augustus-Alexei was designed to serve as a full merger of the emperor's maternal and paternal lines, but was dissolved with the creation of the Eniarkian Confederation several months later. After a period of inactivity, now-Grand Duke Alexander declared the Kingdom of Eniarku on 5 August 2015 and established the House of Slava, again an attempt to gather both sides of his family under a single name; the king's naming choice, however, quickly became the subject of heavy criticism by members of the maternal side of the royal household, who accused the king of bias towards the other side of the family.

Taken together with the fact that the king's father had been explicitly stripped of all but his house title, this pressure ultimately led the king to issue a royal proclamation later the following year, declaring:

My Subjects of the Kingdom of Eniarku and of My Realms and Territories, to all The Lords of Parliament Assembled and all others whatsoever to whom these Presents shall come, Greeting! Know that I, by virtue of the Headship of the Most Royal House of Slava and the Chiefship of all the Royals and Nobles thereof, do hereby Decree and Declare that as from the date of this Proclamation, My House and Family shall be styled and known as the House and Family of Abbott....

— Abbott Proclamation, 5 Dec 2016

The current name is a reference to the former home of the sovereign in the previously autonomous realm of Shaw, which was renamed Abbott Palace in August 2017 when the king took up semi-permanent residence there. Under the 2024 constitution and current Law of the Grand Ducal House, the family officially returned to its principal role as sovereign of Eniarku, with Alexander taking the throne as grand duke on 29 May 2024.

Use of surnames and courtesy titles

The grand duke officially does not use his family or house name. Immediate family members of the sovereign within reasonable proximity of blood are typically styled "[Forename], [Title] of [Place]"; for example, the current heir presumptive Evan is titled "Evan, Prince of August". While not currently in use, members of the immediate royal family are also entitled to use courtesy titles of "Prince of Eniarku" and "Princess of Eniarku" in conjunction with their other titles. Lower members of the house (i.e., those not included in the line of succession) are permitted to amend "of Abbott" after their forenames or in conjunction with their other titles. By law, children of the grand duke will bear the surname Abbott, as will agnatic descendants (via patrilineality) who enjoy the style of Royal Highness and the title of prince or princess; relatives other than Alexander's descendants may be granted the use of the surname by decree of the sovereign, but otherwise employ their own house name as surname when necessary.

Titles

With the reestablishment of Eniarku in 2024, the Law of the Grand Ducal House officially absorbed and consolidated titles associated with constituent realms of the now-defunct Eniarkian Commonwealth (established by the Christmas Statutes in 2015) under the crown of the grand duchy. While most titles below are held by the grand duke directly, some belong to immediate family members of the sovereign in their own right. In addition, while the defunct Houses of Augustus-Alexei and Slava held titles higher than those of the House of Abbott according to traditional rules of precedence (namely King of Eniarku and Emperor and Lord of All the Eniarkus), these titles are not recognized by the current house law and were officially terminated by decree of the grand duke on 29 May 2024.
