This country is a member of the League and Commonwealth of Durham Micronations.

Jocistan is a one chair in Durham, Great Britain, which also occupies half of another chair. The capital is Jocngrad, the area of the chair on which the back would rest. Jocistan is a Revolutionary Socialist nation, committed to the International Revolution.

The FDPSSRJ is ruled by “His Most Venerable Excellency, Liberator of the Jocistani People and Supreme Leader of Jocistan, Premier for Life, Grand High Marshal and Admiral of All Armed Forces of Jocistan, James O’Connell Nash, R.C., R.S., D.J.C., V.J., O.C.R., J.M.C., J.S.F., Fighter for the Freedom and Liberation of the Oppressed, Creator Of Wealth and Bringer of Prosperity, Enlightened and Strong Ruler, Deliverer of Jocistan from the Evils of Tyranny and Oppression, Dear Leader, Guardian of Jocistan and its Ideals from Evil”. He rules with the aid of the Politburo, a council of State Commissars (essentially Ministers) whom he appoints, and the Jocngrad Workers’ Soviet, an elected body which represents the workers of Jocngrad.

Foreign Policy and Relations

International Recognition of Jocistan and Jocistani Relations With Other Micronations

Jocistan has so far been recognised by 6 other micro - nations: the Autocracy of Jackistan, the Empire of Toristan, East Toristan, the Republic of Punistan, the Republic of Pagia, the Democratic People's Republic of Sholand, and the British Empire. It is formally allied with both Jackistan and Toristan, with Jackistan and Toristan also allied with each other. This creates a three - way alliance similar to the pre-WW1 "Triple Entente" between Great Britain, France, and Tsarist Russia. It maintains diplomatic relations with all nations that recognise it, and has an embassy in the British Empire.

Jocistan is also a member of the League and Commonwealth of Durham Micronations, an organisation that it founded along with the British Empire.

Jocistani Recognition of Nations and Micronations and Jocistani Foreign Policy

Jocistan recognises all U.N. member states other than North Korea and the People's Republic of China. Jocistan recognises one Korea, controlled by the government of the South. It recognises all of China, other than Tibet, as controlled by the Republic of China, or Taiwan. Jocistan also recognises the non - U.N. member states of Tibet, the Vatican City, and Kosovo.

Jocistan also recognises the micro - nations of the Kingdom of North Sudan, the British Empire, the Democratic People's Republic of Sholand, Coo Cluck Clan Land, the Empire of Toristan, the Autocracy of Jackistan, the Kingdom of Zaraland, and the Republic of Punistan.

Jocistani Policy on Israel - Palestine Conflict

Jocistan's policy on the Israel - Palestine conflict is that Jocistan fully supports the existence of a Jewish State and believes that the State of Israel is sufficient as a Jewish homeland. However, it also supports efforts to create a nation for dispossessed Palestinian Arabs, with the 1967 borders. It does not recognise Palestine at the moment, however, as there is no legitimate Palestinian government that exerts control over any significant area of land in Israel/Palestine. We believe that recognition of a Palestinian state at the present time would largely play into the hands of anti - Semitic terrorists, such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Population, Languages, and Demographics

Jocistan's population is entirely comprised of people who are ethnically British, though some Jocistanis have Nigerian, Pakistani, Indian, Afrikaner, and German descent. Jocistan's population is majority white, though there are some mixed - race citizens of Indian and Pakistani descent, and one black citizen of Nigerian descent. Every Jocistani is a fluent English speaker, and one citizen is near - fluent in German. Every Jocistani also knows some French and Latin, to varying degrees of fluency. The majority of the Jocistani populations is Anglican Christian, though there are also several atheists and agnostics. No other faith groups are known to exist in Jocistan.

The People's Red Guard (the Jocistani army) is by far the largest employer in Jocistan. All save three citizens have jobs of some nature in the military.

History

Jocistani Independence and I Do Not Like Jocistani Wars

The Free Democratic Peoples Soviet Socialist Republic of Jocistan officially declared its "full independence and secession" from the U.K. on 12 March 2018 with the signing of its constitution, though a functioning state and military had already been established, having grown gradually over the past few months. The territory claimed was one chair. Jocistan also inspired another nations, the Autocracy of Jackistan, to declare its independence, and to open friendly relations with Jocistan. However, another nation was also established, the Republic of I Do Not Like Jocistan. "I Do Not Like Jocistan" immediately declared war on Jocistan. Despite early Jocistani advances in which the "I Do Not Like Jocistani" President was capture, a stalemate developed, and the President soon escaped.

This stalemate continued for some time, until Jackistan intervened on the Jocistani side. After that, the war was soon won, and "I Do Not Like Jocistan" was partitioned equally between the two victorious powers. Though Jackistan incorporated its half into the territory that it claimed, Jocistan merely occupies the territory temporarily for short - term security purposes, and intends to return it to the U.K. at a later date.

The I Do Not Like Jocistanis have since declared themselves a nomadic tribe, and are yet to formally surrender despite having been clearly defeated in the war, and having no military capabilities at all. Jocistan does not recognise this tribe, and so does not consider itself at war.

Jocistani Diplomacy Post-Independence

Shortly after that, Jocistan opened friendly relations with another nation, the Empire of Toristan. However, a crisis occurred when Jackistan (with which Jocistan was at this stage allied) and Toristan went to war. The Jocistani government adopted a policy of neutrality, and eventually persuaded the two nations to enter peace talks. After a major summit, a peace treaty was signed and a three - way alliance emerged between the three countries.

Jocistani Diplomatic Crises With Empire and Founding of L.C.D.M.

On 3 May 2018, a major diplomatic crisis broke out between Jocistan and the British Empire. Jocistan declares its support for a rebel group that was active in Anglestonia, one of the Empire’s constituent territories, called the South Anglestonian Independence Army (SARA). SARA’s demands were for the historically autonomous south to become a separate territory from the Grand Duchy. The group has been condemned by the Empire as a terrorist group.

The Empire responded by recognising the Republic of I Do Not Like Jocistan as a non - territorial nomadic sovereign entity, and offered it an embassy from which to operate a government in exile. The crisis ushered in a grave phase of poor relations between Jocistan and the Empire.

It lasted 2 days, until, on the 5th of April, it was resolved with an agreement whereby the Empire would in the future gain new territory as a “Dominion of New South Anglestonia”. Jocistan would withdraw its support for SARA, and the British Empire would withdraw its support for the so - called “Jocistani Liberal Party”. The Empire did not withdraw its recognition of the Republic of I Do Not Like Jocistan, but did withdraw its support for them over Jocistan.

Another result of the crisis's resolution was that Jocistan and the British Empire co - operated to create a new inter - micronational organisation, the League and Commonwealth of Durham Micronations. It was signed into existence by the Empire's leader, the "Imperial Governor", Lord Lyons, and promptly joined by Jocistan.

However, another crisis occurred shortly afterwards, when the Supreme Leader of Jocistan won the election for the role of "Commonwealth Chairman" through allegedly forcing all of Jocistan's population to vote for him over any other candidate. The crisis briefly resulted in the expulsion of Jocistani diplomats from the Empire, but was resolved when Jocistan agreed to re - do the elections (though the Supreme Leader still won).

Creation of Jocistani M.M.A.

On 17 May 2018, a national sport was created for Jocistan, "Jocistani Mixed Martial Arts", colloquially known as "Jocistani Gladiators". It is, essentially, gladiatorial combat, with military personnel of varying ranks required to fight each other in an improvised arena. All Jocistani military personnel are required to compete (other than the Supreme Leader, who holds the title of "Grand Master"), and the Jocistani government claims that it "shows to the wider world the unflinching courage and strength of every soldier of the People's Red Guard".

Ceasefire With I Do Not Like Jocistan

On 18 May 2018, a ceasefire was negotiated between Jocistan and the Republic of I Do Not Like Jocistan, following which President Page of I Do Not Like Jocistan was admitted into the Supreme Leader's V.I.P. Box for a Jocistani M.M.A match.

Resumption of Hostilities With I Do Not Like Jocistan

However, the ceasefire would prove short - lived, with the I Do Not Like Jocistanis soon openly withdrawing from it.

Final Resolution of Conflict With I Do Not Like Jocistan

On 4 June 2018, Jocistan negotiated a resolution to the conflict with I Do Not Like Jocistan, whereby Jocistan would withdraw from the formerly I Do Not Like Jocistani lands that it occupied, and I Do Not Like Jocistan renaming itself the "Republic of Pagia". Whilst Jackistan did also reluctantly agree to the hostilities, it is yet to announce any withdrawal from the territories that it occupies.

Failed Coup of 27 June

Preceding Riots

The coup was preceded by riots and mutinies amongst the People's Red Guard over a lack of pay. Supported by the general public and by [Autocracy of Jackistan|Jackistan], [Empire of Toristan|Toristan], and [Republic of Punistan|Punistan], the rioters gained control of Jocngrad.

Forced Resignation of Supreme Leader and Premier for Life

The rioters captured Jocistan's Supreme Leader and Premier for Life, and forced him to resign. There followed a Jackistani occupation, in which Jackistan's Grand High Autocrat and Dictator proclaimed himself Supreme Leader, with Punistan's President becoming Premier for Life.

Counter-Coup

A conspiracy amongst some major generals, Assistant Field Marshal Debnam and Marshal Redfern, to restore O'Connell Nash to his former status succeeded, with the coup being defeated. Field Marshal Hopkins was demoted to the rank of Colonel for supporting the coup, and Assistant Field Marshal Debnam and Marshal Redfern were both promoted to the post of "Joint Field Marshal" in a move of dubious legality. There followed a brief period of hostilities woth Jackistan, before the countries made peace and restored their alliance.

Significant Growth In Size

On 22 July 2018, the Jocistani constitution was amended to incorporate a 195.8 square feet bedroom into Jocistan's territorial claim. This significantly enlarged Jocistan. A new capital was created, called Jocngrad like the old capital, with old Jocngrad being renamed Redferngrad, and the original claim becoming the county of Okkistan, both names in honour of Joint Field-Marshal Oscar Redfern.

Crisis with Anglestonia

Initial Anglestonian Measures and Provocation of Crisis

On 14 August 2018, the government of Anglestonia, an autonomous region of the British Empire, announced various measures against Jocistan, provoking a crisis between the countries. These included ban on Jocistani goods, and a ban on Jocistani government officials having any noble titles in Anglestonia. This led to the Supreme Leader and Premier for Life losing his title of Lord.

Jocistani Occupation of "Lyons Territory"

However, negotiations opened between the two governments, and plans were discussed for Jocistan to occupy a 17 square yard territory (known to the Jocistani government as the "Lyons Territory" after Lord Lyons, the then Grand Duke (now King) of Anglestonia. The idea was that once Jocistan had established control over the territory, sovereignty and governance would be transferred to Anglestonia.

Revised Anglestonian Measures and Refutation of "Lyons Territory" Offer

However, the Anglestonian government made a U-turn on their previous reconciliatory stance, revising their measures to include making the illegal Jocistani Liberal Party a part of the Anglestonian government, the establishment of a new 1 square yard county in South Vietgnome called Jocdarshire (derived from the Welsh for "Good Jocistan"), refusal to recognise Jocistan's currency, the Jocistani theta, and adoption of a policy of always officially referring to Jocistan's Supreme Leader and Premier for Life as "King James the Tyrant".

Jocistani Response

Jocistan's Supreme Leader and Premier for Life responded by giving a speech in which he coined the phrase "We shall not Submit!" which became a slogan of Jocistani anti-Anglestonian propaganda. The crisis continued into the Toristani-Jocistani war.

Toristani Wars

First War (War of the Grand Alliance/Great Patriotic War)

Outbreak of Hostilities with Toristan

On 13 September 2018, the Empire of Toristan declared war on Jocistan. The Toristani government took the decision to declare unprovoked war primarily because they were heavily indebted to the Jocistani government, and because they were confident of Jakcistani support, which they felt would make victory assured. The war was initially stalemated in battle, with most action happening in the realms of espionage. However, Jocistan gradually began to make gains.

Initial Jackistani Intervention

However, at this point, the Autocracy of Jackistan, which was allied to both Toristan and Jocistan, intervened on the Toristani side, as the Toristanis had predicted they would, declaring war on Jocistan. This led to a rapid change of strengths, with the Toristani-Jackistani side clearly winning, and began to threaten the very existence of Jocistan.

Jackistani Defection

However, the war had another twist: for seemingly inexplicable reasons, the Jackistanis switched sides, making peace with Jocistan and restoring their alliance, and declaring war on Toristan. Jackistan and Jocistan formed a "Grand Alliance", giving the war its alternative name. This once more put the Jocistani side in the ascendancy.

The Battle of Durham

The war culminated in the battle of Durham, a resounding defeat for the Toristanis. It ended with a one-man charge on the Toristani line from the Jocistani Joint Field Marshal Oscar Redfern, who single-handedly captured Emperor Torin, leading to victory for the Grand Alliance.

Treaty of Torinburg

The war was resolved with the treaty of Torinburg, which ended the war, and established a communist Jocistani client state in the eastern half of Torinburg, called East Toristan. The terms of the Treaty were these:

  • Toristan must pay reparations of 1 fountain pen to Jackistan. Fountain pens are an object of great cultural significance and national pride for Jakcistanis. In Jackistani culture, surrendering a fountain pen to another for anything besides an equally good fountain pen is seen as the ultimate humiliation.
  • Toristan must pay reparations of Θ5 to Jocistan.
  • Toristan must recognise the total and full independence of the People’s Socialist Democratic Republic of Toristan (informally known as East Toristan). Its territory is the eastern half of the capital, Torinburg.
  • Toristan may not declare war on another nation (though it can still go to war if another country attacks it), and must limit the size of its military to no more than 3 people.
  • East Toristan will mark 13 September as Toristan Liberation Day, and Jocistan and Jackistan will mark 13 September as Victory Day.
Reaction of Anglestonia to the Treaty of Torinburg and Ensuing Crisis

The Kingdom of Anglestonia in the British Empire, which was already in a diplomatic crisis with Jocistan (see above), responded in a somewhat reactionary manner to the peace, declaring its full support for the West Toristanis (as the remnants of the Empire were now known) and refused tor recognise East Toristan. It also offered to form an alliance with West Toristan and to support them in a war against East Toristan. This lead to a worsening of the crisis, which finally ended in humiliation for the Anglestonians, when the Emperor Torin I of West Toristan officially condemned them for their stance on the conflict. In the aftermath of Emperor Torin's statement, the crisis was resolved, with Anglestonia withdrawing its various measures an the county of Jocdarshire pledging to change its name and motto (though this is yet to be done).

Second War (Second Great Patriotic War)

West Toristani Attack on East Toristan

Following the peace terms, Jocistan and Jackistan pumped colossal amounts of credit-free aid into East Toristan, hoping that its success would inspire West Toristanis to rebel against the Imperial dictatorship that the peace terms had left untouched. However, this had the opposite effect: Emperor Torin and his commanders hoped that a swift victory would deliver these resources to the West. Due to this belief, they launched a hasty and badly-planned attack, during which East Toristan remained safe while Jocistani forces dug in for a war of attrition.

Jackistani Neutrality

What was notable, however, was that Jackistan tried to stay neutral. It had tried to rebuild its alliance with Toristan after the first war, and believed that a Toristani or Jocistani victory was equally beneficial. This was exasperating for Jocistanis, while it was a major propaganda coup for Toristan, which at one point almost managed to pull off a stunning trick which, if successful, would have led to its instant victory.

The Jocistani Comrade Incident

Toristani spies successfully got out the story that Jackistan was joining the war on their side. This was reported by Jocistan's state-owned online newspaper, the Jocistani Comrade, and believed by the Jocistani military. The truth (i.e. that this was fictitious) only got out just before Jocistan was going to launch a full-scale attack on Jackistan. While this did not succeed in its main goal of bringing Jackistan into the war, it did alienate them from Jocistan and strike a blow at Jocistani morale.

Treaty of Redferngrad

It eventually became clear to both sides that if a compromise peace was not agreed, both countries would collapse. This led Jocistan's Supreme Leader and Premier for Life to draw up the Treaty of Redferngrad, which reunited Toristan, on the condition that Toristan would become pacifist and a democratic constitutional monarchy. This was agreed to by the Toristanis, and hailed by the Jocistani Comrade as "a victory for democracy".

A photograph of the Treaty of Redferngrad published on the Jocistani government's Instagram page.

Third War (Third Great Patriotic War)

Collapse of the Treaty of Redferngrad

However, the Treaty proved to be heavily unpopular in Toristan, leading to a succession of coups by members of the military and royal family, most notably Prince James, who tried to dissolve the territory altogether and cede its lands to the U.K. However, Emperor Torin led a successful counter-coup shortly afterwards. Though this was initially supported by Jocistan, he went on to establish a highly militaristic fascist dictatorship, renaming the country the Kingdom of Toristan and declaring war on Jocistan.

Resumption of Conflict

This led to a resumption of the bitter war of attrition that had drained both countries before. The stalemate continued for some time, with neither side making any advances.

Pagian and Hofflandic Interventions

The Kingdom of Hoffland, a small nation only recognised by Toristan, joined the war on the Toristani side. To counter this, the Republic of Pagia intervened on Jocistan's side. Hoffland soon fell, with King Henry I transported to a Jocistani gulag and "re-educated".

Rise of New Nations

Two other micronations (mainly led by high-ranking Jocistani soldiers) declared their independence during the conflict, going to war with Toristan. These were the Free Democratic People's Republic of Markistan (led by a Jocistani-Jackistani dual citizen with a dubious criminal record in Jackistan) and the Free Democratic People's Republic of Hoppistan (led by Assistant Field Marshal Hopkins of Jocistan).

Eventual Toristani Surrender

The war had become a mere contest to see which side would capitulate first, and that side proved to be Toristan. On Saturday 3 November, with the country in anarchy, King Torin signed the Treaty of Jocngrad. It declared his abdication, and the creation of a Republic of Toristan, and the establishment of an "International Committee for Toristan" to decide on the country's future. Jocistan's Joint Field Marshal Redfern was appointed President of Toristan.

Torin's Rebellion

Collapse of Committee

However, all did not go as the Treaty intended. Jackistan called for a monarchical restoration while President Redfern suggested that the country be renamed Okkistan and serve as a new Jocistani puppet state, with him as the dictator. This caused the collapse of the Committee.

Torin's Attempt to Seize Power

Taking advantage of these events, Torin led a rebellion in a last-ditch attempt to take over on November 8. In retaliation, Jocistan sent an expeditionary force under Joint Field Marshal Debnam to put it down, but Torin managed to escape the battle with his force largely intact.

Toristani Coup and Creation of Liberland

The Jocistani leadership realised that they would need Jackistani approval for lasting stability, so asked them what they would have to do to make the events acceptable to Jackistan. It was then agreed that the Jackistani diplomat, Caspar Khan, should be installed as President instead of Redfern. As Khan did not have ambitions similar to Redfern's, this was seen as preferable anyway by Jocistan. Consequently, on November 9, there was a coup in Toristan in which Khan was installed as President, renaming the country the Republic of Liberland.

Consequent Jackistani Intervention

Due to Torin's continued rebellion against a Jackistani citizen, Jackistan intervened in the conflict, resolutely quashing the rebellion.

Politics and Government

Jocistan is a one - party state, ruled by the “Jocistani Socialist Workers’ Patriotic Party" and the constitution bans the existence of other political parties. There is another active political party, called the "Jocistani Liberal Party" although this party is illegal and so operates from Anglestonia. The government claims to be Soviet, socialist, and in support of the international socialist revolution. Although the country does not claim to be communist, that label has been attributed to it and there are numerous examples of communism in Jocistan such as Karl Marx featuring on all of its banknotes, a hammer and sickle on its flag, and "The Order of the Communist Revolution" being an official honour.
