The First Secretary of State, colloquially known as the First Secretary, is an office in the Government of Mevora that is sometimes held by a minister of the crown. The office indicates seniority, including over all other Secretaries of State, as one of the most senior members of the cabinet. It is comparable to the role of Deputy Prime Minister. The office is not always in use.

The office is currently vacant.

Constitutional Position

Similarly to the deputy prime minister, the first secretary doesn't have automatic right of succession to the prime ministry. The first secretary's place is vague in the constitution - with the constitution only allowing for the prime minister appointing a deputy and not specifying anything further.

Appointment

The First Secretary of State is nominated for office by the prime minister. The officeholder is then appointed by the Monarch and serves at their pleasure.

Responsibilities

The office officially has no additional responsibilities. However, the role does provide help to the prime minister by leaving a senior minister free to perform correlation and co-ordination and to chair committees and, secondly, it enables the Prime Minister to send a signal as to the status of the holder.

As well as this, appointing someone to the office allows the prime minister to appoint a minister who can deputise for them without needing to appoint a deputy head of government.
