The Grand Hootie

The Grand Hootie is a Grand Poobah regent who assumes the pseudonym Stan or Sally Cromwell. He or she can, however, delegate all powers to an advisor on an unlimited basis while retaining responsibility for all decisions made. A directorial system is possible in theory, but not preferred, but in practice, due to the Multiverse solipsistic foundations of Stan, there can be multiple Grand Hooties.
The spouse of the Grand Hootie--the Ladybug or Grand Beetle (the Ladybug also called "Team Mom" in the FUN Council) wears matching purple seersucker and a matching crown. At high ceremonies, she may also wear the Lady Bug's jewel.
The Ceremonial Mace of Stan is made of soapstone with electrum ornamentation and resembles a young palm. The official ceremonial dress of the Grand Hootie is a purple seersucker suit worn without a tie and the sweetgrass Crown of Glory. (above) Citizens may also be found wearing the crown, especially at parties and when representing Stan abroad, but at official state functions, it is worn only by the Grand Hootie and Ladybug. In a crowded room occupied by the Grand Hootie and other Stanis, the Hootie would be distinguished by the seersucker suit, the double-headed Gamecock signet ring, and the corundum coin in his or her left breast pocket. During high ceremonies the Grand Hootie changes his pocket square from purple to malachite green, regardless of whether or not the Lady Bug is wearing her jewel.
Everyday dress for the Hootie, Ladybug, or Beatle is a burlap sackcloth shirt, also worn by Slim and Young'n. In youth, the garb is simply called the Hessian shirt, but as Slim reaches maturity and becomes the Hootie, he realizes a greater ethic of repentance so that the shirt is reckoned sackcloth. Though it is not the literal sackcloth of biblical reference, it nonetheless plays on the mistranslation of שַׂק (śaq) cloth to connote an Orthodox Christian ethos of joyful mourning or χαρμολύπη. Slim and Young'n wear a sweetgrass fishing hat padded with Spanish moss, and the Hootie wears a sweetgrass cross woven in the Greek palm cross style from childhood. Young'n frequently carries a fishing pole.

The Great-Grand Hootie also portrays a character called The Bard of Bull Street who narrates the story of Stan, but this is never publicly acknowledged. The Bard also champions the cause of "honoring as many departed patients of the South Carolina State Mental Hospital as were subject to mass burial." In terms of character, the Hootie is inspired by Fools for Christ, Diogenes, Tom Sawyer, Robin Hood, Forest Gump, Peter Pan and Odysseus. Tom Sawyer represents the unapologetic innocence of youth, Forest Gump, transparency and being childlike into adulthood and Robin Hood, rebellion against tyranny and fighting for the redemption of a failing or besieged power. Merger is a type of The Wizard of Oz, The Odyssey and the Gospels. Symbolically, Stan (The Hootie) and the Ladybug are also progeny of the Personifications of of the United States, Uncle Sam and Columbia, the latter additionally representing the District of Columbia. The June Bug admits to being named Columbia after her mother. They likewise serve as personifications of South Carolina and Columbia. That is to say, Stan is a parable about the masculine aspect of America, courting, reuniting with, saving and being redeemed by the feminine aspect, his crown, the capital.

Relationship between the heads of state
The Ladybug has several nicknames for the Grand Hootie. When they travel to the mountains, she calls him mountain chicken, when they go to the beach, beach chicken, and when he is acting irresponsibly, headless chicken monster.
