Reign
On January 2022, King Gwangjo peacefully abdicated at the age of 49 or 50, after a reign of 6 years. Upon his uncle's abdication, Yi Gyeom succeeded to the throne at the age of 16. He was proclaimed king from the hall of Myeongdong Palace at Hamyang by the Chief State Councillor Kim Nam-joon as Hyeongjong.
Due to his accession to the throne, Hyeongjong's reign would last only seven months, until his abdication in August 2022. In many ways, Hyeongjong was a puppet monarch who was much more favorable to the new reformation system than his nephew had been, being economic and modernization reform-minded and decreasing of monarchist inclined.
