This article is about the Ameristralian military award. It is not to be confused with Distinguished Service Medal.


The Royal Ameristralian Defence Forces Distinguished Service Medal is a Royal Ameristralian Defence Forces decoration awarded for "exceptionally meritorious service in a position of responsibility." It is one of three Distinguished Service Medals in the Ameristralian Defence Forces.
Foreign soldiers who have served alongside or with Royal Ameristralian Defence Forces are eligible for the award.

General information

The Royal Ameristralian Defence Forces Distinguished Service Medal was established by the Act to Establish Ameristralian Honours for Citizens, Military and Foreign Dignitaries - Contributory Factors, Eligibility, Requirements, Categories, and Rites 2021. The Distinguished Service Medal may be awarded by the Minister of Defence, or by such military commanders, as the Minister may designate, to any person, while serving in any capacity in or with the Royal Ameristralian Defence Forces, has distinguished themself -

  • while in a position of responsibility during a conflict with an enemy of Ameristralia;
  • while in command of military operations with an opposing foreign force; or
  • while serving in command alongside friendly foreign forces involved in a conflict with an opposing foreign force in which Ameristralia is not a belligerent party.

The actions do not warrant receipt of the Army Cross or Navy Cross. The behaviour must have been exceptionally meritorious while in command, and greater than required for the Legion of Merit.

Appearance

The Distinguished Service Medal was designed by David Brooke in 2021. (Brooke designed all Ameristralian military decorations).

The medal is a gold star measuring 38mm (11/2 inches) in circumferential diameter.

The star hangs from its ribbon by a circular loop attached to a rectangular device. The ribbon is 35mm (13/8 inches) in width with five equal stripes of blue 162E4D; yellow EAD169; blue BDD2E9; white FFFFFF; blue 162E4D; a thick stripe of yellow EAD169 in the centre; with five equal stripes of blue 162E4D; white FFFFFF; blue BDD2E9; yellow EAD169; blue 162E4D.

History

The Lord Mayor of Ameristralia, David Brooke, presented the idea of the Distinguished Service Medal to the Municipal Assembly on 28 August 2021 to award Ameristralian combatants who distinguished themselves. The Municipal Assembly agreed and approved the Distinguished Service Medal for all Defence Forces personnel as well as the Army and Navy branches. It is the highest precedence medal for meritorious service.
