Daniel of Australis (born Daniel Roscoe, 6 April 2006) is a British-Australian micronationalist politician, statistician, and journalist. Founder and Grand Duke of the Unified Royal States of Australis, Roscoe is a prominent member of the MicroWiki Community, currently serving as a Moderator on MicroWiki@Discord and a patroller on MicroWiki. He is involved in the politics of several micronations and the Cupertino Alliance, including Australis, Austenasia, Naveria, New Virginia and formerly Ponderosa Hills, alongside his position as CEO of Statistic-Dime since December 2020, a highly regarded and publicised statistical research company.
Roscoe has been one of three delegates for Australis in the Cupertino Alliance since July 2020, and by late September, he was appointed as the Deputy Minister for Asian Affairs by Chairman Jayden Lycon, later being made the Minister for Asian Affairs the following month. Roscoe was the first to announce his candidacy in the 2nd Cupertino Alliance chairmanship election, doing so in the middle of October, and he quickly became a leading candidate, leading most opinion polls even after a leaking scandal until the last three published on Christmas Day and 4 January 2021. He dropped out in early January 2021, citing it as due to stress and mental health concerns over the spiteful environment.
Among other positions, Roscoe is also Home Secretary of the Commonwealth of Naveria, Secretariat for Statistical Research of the Grand Unified Micronational and Chairman of the Constantia Pact, a small invite-only micronational coalition based on The Fun Gang–a social group he co-founded and is the de facto owner of. He is a patroller on MicroWiki, and as of January 2021, has made over three-thousand edits to the wiki. On Discord, he was formerly an administrator on MicroPub and a representative on MicroDemocracy.
After initial ridicule, Roscoe quickly grew into a prominent member of the MicroWiki community, particularly in the Discord Era. Zed ranked him twenty-first in his list of the Top 25 Most Influential Micronationalists in the MicroWiki Sector of 2020, and Roscoe had earlier been placed second in the MicroWiki's Top 25 public survey in October. A co-founder and de facto owner of The Fun Gang since early October 2020, he has also been a member of the Micropolitan Club and Lounge since December 2020.
Early life and personal
Daniel Roscoe was born in Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom on 6 April 2006, where he continued to live until January 2009, when his immediate family made the choice to emigrate to Western Australia. He began school in 2010, and started high school in 2017.
Roscoe's friends include several members of the Privy Council of Australis, including Casper von Naveria, Liam Munroe and Cameron Koehler, among other micronationalists in The Fun Gang, and several others not in either.
In early April 2020, Roscoe discovered micronationalism via the Principality of Sealand and the Principality of Hutt River. Subsequently after, on 8 April 2020, Roscoe founded the Commonwealth of Australis (Later the Unified Royal States of Australis), with four other individuals, who would become the Pentarchy, a group of five rulers with equal power. However, throughout April and May, the other four members of the Pentarchy became less active, until Roscoe remained the only active member of the Australissian Pentarchy.
On 28 May 2020, Roscoe led a democratic coup d'état, with the goal of dissolving the Pentarchy, and becoming the sole, absolute Monarch of Australis. The motion succeeded, with the rest of the Pentarchy agreeing, making Roscoe the Grand Duke of Australis. Australis remained relatively unknown until July, when Roscoe applied for Australis to become a member of the Cupertino Alliance.
In the latter third of 2020, Roscoe led Australis into the Grand Unified Micronational, and is commonly credited for making Australis a micronational power.
Since July 2020, Roscoe has been one of three delegates for Australis in the Cupertino Alliance, the other two being Patrick Kenny and Xavier Joubert. In late September, he was appointed as the Deputy Minister for Asian Affairs by Jayden Lycon the Chair of the Alliance, and made the Minister for Asian Affairs a month later, following the previous Minister stepping down. Roscoe usually acts as the speaker of Asian/Oceanian Auxiliary sessions in the Cupertino Alliance.
2021 Bid for Chair
On 19 October 2020, Roscoe announced his intentions to run for Chair of the Alliance, the first delegate of the Alliance to do so. Shortly after, he launched a campaign website, titled Vote Roscoe 2021, and released a campaign logo. He promised that his major policies as Cupertino Chair would be running more charity/fundraising events, modernising the Cupertino Alliance MicroWiki page, and increasing the size and activity within the Asian/Oceanian Sector of the Alliance.
In an early opinion poll undertaken from 4-8 November 2020 by the Micronational Gazette, in a partnership with the Cupertino Alliance electoral commission, CESE, found Roscoe to be leading the pre-polls, with a 7.1 point lead, totalling 35.7% of the popular vote, followed by competitor Liam Munroe with 28.6% of the vote.
On 4 January 2021, Roscoe dropped out of the election, due to the stress of the campaign having an unforeseen impact on his mental health. Roscoe formally released a statement announcing his intent to drop out of the race;
I regret to inform the delegates of the Cupertino Alliance Sertor Valentinus and I have come to the conclusion that it is for the best interests of the Cupertino Alliance and our mental health that we drop out of the race for Chair and Lieutenant Chair.
I have had people come to me after a video call with friends, saying that I looked like I haven't slept in days. This is due to the constant stress. Valentinus also stated that he had slept very poorly in recent days as a result of this election.
This election, which originally was perfectly civil, has recently become rather toxic, with a lot of drama occurring between both parties. This is not what an election should look like. It is because of these two reasons above that we have come to the conclusion that dropping out of the race is the best option for us.
I will be taking to time to work on other projects I have planned within the micronational community, such as the upcoming MicroWIki Virtual Summit, working on Australis, running in the upcoming New Virginian by-election, and also working in my new position as Secretariat for Statistical Research in the GUM. Maybe I'll run again in the future.
Thank you to all those who I have gone up against in this election, and those who have helped as members of my campaign staff. You have helped me grow as a person and as a micronationalist. These people are Sertor Valentinus, Liam Munroe, Isaiah Burdette, Logan Ross, Matthew Xia, Jamez, Patrick Kenny and Casper.
I wish all the best in the future to the Chair-elect, Logan Ross. I have no doubt that you and your Lt. Chair candidate will make the Alliance a better place.— Daniel Roscoe, 4 January 2021
Roscoe has been a citizen of the Commonwealth of New Virginia since 16 December 2020. He was placed in the Canton of Roanoke, and shortly after, applied to join the Free Democratic Party of New Virginia, and was accepted as a member of the party.
Following the dismissal of one of the three Burgesses-at-large for the Roanoke Canton in late December 2020, and the subsequent announcement of a by-election to elect a new Burgess-at-large to fill the vacancy, Roscoe announced his candidacy on behalf of the FDP on the same day. The following day, Aidan McGrath of the National Party also announced his candidacy for the election.
On 13 January 2021, Roscoe withdrew from the Free Democratic Party, to join the newly formed Alliance 21/The Greens party, led by James Frisch. Roscoe's electoral campaign is expected to be cut short with the termination of the by-election, but has expressed interest in running in the next General Election.
Statistical work and other ventures
Roscoe has been the chief executive officer (CEO) of Statistic-Dime since December 2020, succeeding its founder Zed. He has since hugely developed Microcode, the largest two-letter code standard in the community. Prior to that, he founded Roscoe Statistics on 26 October 2020, and created the user survey MicroWiki's Top 25 – a survey asking participants to rank the 25 most active people on MicroWiki@Discord from a scale of one to five – and the Micronational Influence Survey, which after various delays was cancelled. Roscoe Statistics also provided pre-polling for the 2nd Cupertino Alliance chairmanship election. It was integrated into Statistic-Dime on 2 December, and Roscoe simultaneously became CEO.
Since October 2020, Roscoe has been one of three delegates for Australis in the Grand Unified Micronational, the others being Patrick Kenny and Isaiah Burdette.[a] Roscoe currently serves as the Secretariat for Statistical Research in the GUM under the chairmanship of Jack Dean. On MicroWiki@Discord, Roscoe is noted for his large level of consistent activity within the server. He was made a Moderator on the server on 1 December 2020. Roscoe is also a journalist, and is the editor-in-chief of Australis Times. He founded MicroWeekly and served as its editor-in-chief between 8 October–18 November 2020, when it merged with Home-made Crown Journal and became a weekly news digest, which he continues to edit.
Enya is a national icon and must be treasured at all costs— Daniel Roscoe, 13 January 2021
Zed ranked Roscoe twenty-first in his list of the Top 25 Most Influential Micronationalists in the MicroWiki Sector of 2020, published in late December 2020.
