A Crown protectorate is a region under the protection of a particular monarch, or a nation with a monarch, either diplomatically or politically. Crown protectorates are often distinct from standard protectorates in that they usually have less autonomy, being treated as autonomous possessions of the Crown, though this is not always the case–numerous crown protectorates exist in various micronational states. Many are formed simply to bolster the prestige of a monarch or throne, though in some cases there is a genuine diplomatic agreement between the parties involved.
