The Commander of the Army is the title of the professional head of the Royal Vishwamitran Army. The Army Commander assists the Chief of the General Staff. The current Commander of the Army is Lieutenant General Vincent von Wilhelm Ironside.

History

The position of the Chief of the Army was first established unofficially with Tanishkaa Patranabish being appointed as the General of the Army on 14 May 2018 by then outgoing President Anoushkaa Patranabish, on the eve of the constitutional coup. She was never officially appointed as the Chief of the Army or Commander in her capacity as a full general.

The office of the Commander of the Army was officially created on 17 February 2021 with Vincent von Wilhelm Ironside becoming the first office-holder. Since then, the serving army commanders are to be by convention of the rank of lieutenant general who are promoted to the rank of full general after taking the responsibilities of the Office of the Chief of the General Staff. However, serving commanders can be promoted to the rank of full general during active service, in recognition to their services and contributions.

Appointment

The Commander of the Army is appointed by the Rashtradhyaksh, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Vishwamitran Armed Forces on the advice of the Minister of Defence and the Chief of the General Staff.
