The Chief Minister of Pontunia is the head of the Royal Assembly of the Kingdom of Pontunia. The Chief Minister is appointed by the majority party of Pontunia after a General Election, to ordinarily be held every four months. Representatives wishing to stand for appointment must first be made Candidates by the Monarch. The maximum number of terms to be appointed as Chancellor is 3, equating to 12 months.
The founding Chief Minister of Pontunia (titled Chancellor) was Leif Olson. Three more Chief Ministers have held office since, including the incumbent Alexandre Olivier, who was elected in August 2021.
Constitutional role
Under Pontunian Law, the Monarch may not be Chief Minister; this law is to ensure that no person has absolute power within the Empire. Although the Monarch can preside over the Royal Assembly, they cannot therefore make themselves a Candidate or vote. If the Prime Minister inherits the Throne, they must either refuse it or stand down and make the Deputy Prime Minister the Acting Prime Minister.
The main role of the Chief Minister is to oversee the activities of the Cabinet and co-ordinate the work of its ministers, and to act as the voice and public face of the elected Pontunian government. The Prime Minister holds several other powers, including the deciding vote in the case of a tie by the Royal Assembly. The Prime Minister is also one of the two choices for Regent should the Monarch be incapacitated.
